Campfire Chat / Dev Stream 🍿 Full notes (no rollback of patch)

Just a little satire about their QA testing…

Minus the white knighting at the bottom from one of the biggest white knighters on these forums

Yeah it’s pretty good work if I do say so myself.

Personally I would want powerleveling reimplemented or triple the speed of leveling from 1-50. Speeding up 50-100 is helpful, but that is when you are fine tuning your build and your choices are more long term. 1-50 are just trash levels after your first play through…

I can endure a certain degree of editorializing (which there was) if the info is good (which it is).

If I wanted a Japanese Deathgrind game I’d go and let Miyazaki rub me in butter and toss me to the dogs in Elden Ring.

No, they didn’t apologize whatsoever. The only statement they made is they know the game isn’t fun after the patch.

The OP has heard an awful lot of positivity that I did not.
The OP has also done some ‘reading between lines’ to invent some positivity that I did not see.

I started taking notes but it quickly became blah-blah-blah, so I’ll just give my impressions.

“We know this is bad. We know this is not fun”.
Wow. I know that was specifically aimed at the nerf patch, but good gods, if they can’t frame it in a more positive way, who can? That’s a meme for the whole game right there handed to us.

I give them points for sounding serious and humble-ish about it though.

They don’t appear to understand their own game, or at least their players. They concentrate on issues for uber-performing players and Seasons and level 50-100 when the vast majority of players are trying to enjoy the campaign and levelling 1-60 or 70.

They say Nightmares weren’t intended as end-game content, so they’ll make it easier. And what was intended as end game? The answer again is “Seasons”? The Seasons that most players aren’t interested in.

(And to the “ARPGs = Seasons” crew. No. They don’t. It’s always been a minority of players. Those that are uber competitive. Those that play 1000s of hours and get bored. Seasons in previous Diablos and all other ARPGs are ignorable and are ignored by the majority of players)

They have understood that when nerfing they need to give alternatives to the builds they are ruining. Good. I mean, they have decades of history to know this but I suppose, good.
Unfortunately, as they have already shown, they put the counter-nerf in, guess what? Seasons.

They say things like “meta changes will be timed better, like for the start of Seasons when people are all rolling new characters”… ARGH. No. They aren’t. Or at least they don’t want to be FORCED to.

I’m concentrating on Seasons because it’s a bugbear of mine, but they say so many things that make it clear to me that, even though they say they want to deliver choice and variety, they fundamentally have no idea how to do that.

The other thing that was clear is that they are struggling with stuff they either should have done months ago or should have been given months more to do.

TL:DR; Very little here reassured me that they either want to or can fix this mess any time soon.

Maybe I’ll come back in a few months. Maybe a year. Maybe then the leveling from 1st will be enjoyable enough to make constant restarts an ok thing or maybe they will realise that if restarting is ‘fun’ people don’t need to be forced to do it! Or that Seasons/Leagues/Ladders and competitive play is a niche that most aren’t interested in so will have changed the emphasis of the game.

Until then I have no hope things will get better.

So your answer to players figuring out how to become overpowered is " its bugged… nerf it" sadd excuse kinda like a parent telling the child " Because I said So!"

that just sounds like a scam, who wants to play a game that they hate?

when even the devs have to admit yea it blows

It feels to light for me, every couple yards its another pack of 6 or so mobs, to me that is boring.

No rollback are you daft?

The biggest takeaway I had was that these guys are really bad at math.

They literally are not rolling almost anything back from the patch.

They are just buffing classes that are underperforming after the patch.

We don’t even know how yet.

Instead of applying a wide area net of nerfing, why not cap vulnerability? At 70, say limit it to 175%; 80 - 200%, 90 - 225%, 100 - 250%. When players hit the limit they will naturally look to invest in other damage or defensive areas. They can also simultaneously be buffing other sources of damage. They wouldn’t need to nerf mobs. Frankly they could add yet another world tier above 4, to counter this apparently terrible optic of seeing players have fun and exploding npcs.

Instead, they chose the route they did with no public testing, nor feedback. A completely irrational, illogical and reactionary take upon seeing a very small select group of sweaty nerds obliterating content (which is going to happen regardless – those dudes no life it). It’s a very clear, deliberate attempt to slow down the consumption of content, such as it is, because even with hundreds of millions of dollars available and invested, 8000+ people still weren’t able to produce enough meaningful things to do. I still can’t believe 8000+ came out with this, and frankly even the art isn’t that great or much better than what you see in contemporaries like PoE.

The combat systems are poorly designed and not well thought out, the itemization is terrible, and now with them stubbornly doubling down on their nerfs and refusing to revert, even the levelling experience is atrocious and ‘not fun’. All this, to funnel people to seasons where they still haven’t come up with anything to engage players beyond a week. What a thoroughly awful development cycle.

o man this is going to age soooooo well. hahhaha

So, they knew it wasn’t going to be fun. They admit that openly now, now for the “die-hard” casual “fans” who have no idea wtf they are talking about saying it’s fun… imagine if the die-hard purist fans didn’t stand up and point out everything that was wrong with the patch, you - “die-hard casuals” would continue playing and perpetuating a terrible game that would eventually run itself into the ground and you should feel bad for standing up for this bs

Maybe you watched a different stream? They never said anything about roll backs.

The vuln nerfs, crit nerfs, CDR nerfs are staying. All the barb bug fixes are staying.

I guess you didn’t listen.

buffs to counter the nerfs sound like extra steps to roll back noob

No, it wasn’t irrational. It wasn’t illogical. It wasn’t even reactionary. They made eternal characters so much weaker, and brought back some of that player power with the borrowed power-theme of the season. It was all intentionally done with this timing so that they get more players to participate in the season, instead of just playing on the eternal realm where the players are already done with the chores.

It all makes perfect sense. If you just assume they’re not trying to provide a quality product to the players, then everything they did has had a very clear goal and a clear effect.
