Ball Lightning- Bug or Design?

With the Gravitational Apsect if Ball Lightning clips a wall or inanimate enemy like a barricade, pyre, etc. you lose the ball lightning. Intended or bugged? Either way it sucks. Just doing a dungeon is a confined space like the jail layout is heinous as a Ball lightning sorc. Its even worse with the Suppressor Affix. I get that it snapshots the location the ball originated but does it have to dissapear if it clips the edge from inside? Killing a pack of 3 elites is basically impossible if you cant get them on top of each other. If its a bug please fix it, if its intentional find a new class designer.

D4 Ball Lightning Bug - YouTube video for clarity, without changing my build it took me nearly 5 minutes to kill that barrier.

I also find if you have a few ball lightnings spinning around you and you teleport into a mob in some cases the mobs donā€™t get hit by the balls at all.

Yeah brought this up in a couple posts, no response about it yet. Would very much like an official statement on this.

Bumping this post with some more video evidence.

Orbiting ball lighting are currently breaking on collision with terrain. Walls, doorways, room columns.

Regardless of whether it is intentional or a bug, it makes tight spaces (like Kor Dragan) a miserable play experience. Youā€™re basically getting the resource sapper debuff because of terrain.

Here is an example casting fine in the middle of a room:

This is casting in the same room near a terrain object and you can see the ball lightnings pop early the second they hit the terrain:

Another example showing the duration changes because of my orientation showing that they definitely disappear because of the collision and not just my proximity to the object:

This is me casting in a tight space, only possible to keep them rotating because Iā€™m in the perfect middle of the room. And, this video also shows them breaking going through a doorway:

Breaking going through doorways is especially heinous because your momentum effectively resets through every doorway unless you teleport through it. Iā€™m not aware of any other build or spec that is punished so much moving from room to room like that, especially given the mana cost in the mid-game for ball lightning.

This was my biggest hope from todays patches. The skill is fine in open terrain and stuff but it is so annoying when it dissapears from walls and barriers that i am now trying to get gear to change the build, not because i cant progress but because it makes me misserable when orbs just go poff

Yet Barb gets a hotfix for their bugsā€¦ Clearly weā€™re the red headed child.

I totally agree with you guys. It feels so horrible to play almost any dungeon doe to balls disappearing when touching walls and columns. I rly hope they patch this soon cos it makes this build almost unplayable.

Also the enhanced ball lightning node seems to be busted as it seems to lower the damageā€¦
without the node I have 651-769 (25%) damage and with node I got 510-624 (20%)ā€¦ like what the hell

the overall mechanic of sorc is so weird. 90% of damage is come from cc but it just doesnā€™t work in pvp and boss content

It works like this. You get ticks faster but the total dmg of one cast is pretty much the same. So it lowers your dmg per tick. ā€œGoodā€ for maybe stacking Lucky hit and getting some kind of procc of off this but i havent found anything really worthwhile for this

This post has been alive for 10 days and still no official response on it.
Letā€™s hope they see this and find a solution rather quickly.
This really makes this build feel much worst.

Actually arc lash and ball lightening sorc combined the both weakness of ranged and close battleā€‹:joy::joy::joy:

I suspect that the collision model have been designed for the standard ball lightning and this legendary was an afterthought.

+1 it is really awkward when a mob stay in the corner of a room and cannot be reached with ball lightning when using Gravitational Aspect.

Even if itā€™s a game engine issue and it will take a while to fix, I would just like for someone at Blizzard to acknowledge that it is a bug and will be resolved at some point.

I think thematically (rationally, not out of spite, but am annoyed by it), it is by design.

  1. Trend is to force function sorc to worst class ranking currently.

  2. Enchantment keeps ball lightning in stationary place to avoid this problem.

  3. Moving ball lightning regular cast in straight line also stops at same objects.

The inverse logic might be something like ball lightning can move past walls, but then that would mean if you are right up against a wall and so is an enemy your gravitational ball lightning hits it through the wall? I donā€™t think thatā€™s the intent of design. I think they actually intended it to stop and the consequence is not a very useful skill in narrow corridor dungeons.

This is a real shame too because I used this aspect to lvl for about 10 levels myself.

It might take more than a hotfix to address this.
The typical projectile, like shards , arrows etc., once they hit unbreakable objects(like wall) they disappear. Now if Ball is considered as projectile, they will have to make an exception in the engine to change the behavior of it once it hit unbreakable objects.

Now, say they made the change, the next problem is damage, does it still do damage once it is in-contact with the object? If so then it would allow the sorc to do damage accorss the wall ā€“ which opens a can of worms of glitches & exploits. If it does not, then they have to implment something for the damage to be turned on/off in terms of the Ball containing any object at all.

For an unfinished class, this is too much to ask these Devs now.

ok, we just received the patch. still pending for a few hotfixes. after you should see lesser bugs.

This could be easily fixed by adding ā€˜Ball Lightning can now pass through objects and wallsā€™ to the aspect.

Itā€™s definitely a design issue. All projectiles work the same way. Come into contact with a wall or structure and they go away. Difference is, because of the way Ball Lightning casts off to the side with this aspect thereā€™s many times where the ball pops before even getting a tick of damage off. At least projectiles cast from the front get their damage in before despawn.

Hopefully they see this and decide to fix it because dungeons are absolutely awful feeling when an elite decides it wants to hug a corner.

This is still happening in Season 2.
