AMD Drivers Crashing - 23.5.1 - 6800XT

I have a Radeon 7900 XTX, one of the best cards you can get, with 24 GB of VRAM. I still get this driver timeout message after random crashes. Sometimes it is when I am in a dungeon (which means I have to start all over again), but sometimes it is when I am just running around in town.

I have tried replacing it with a friend’s 6600, and it seemed to work okay. He plays Diablo and uses that card with no problems, so I figured it was a good test when he offered. We played for a good 4-5 hours with the 6600 on my machine and it worked fine, so I took the 7900 XTX back to Microcenter and they swapped it out. But then I got the message this morning on the 6600, before I had the chance to install the 7900.

So I have tried TWO DIFFERENT AMD CARDS, I have the latest drivers installed (the one where the notes say right at the top that they added support for Diablo IV…liars), I have tried messing with the card’s graphics settings, and I have tried messing with the game’s graphics settings, all to no avail. The issue does not happen on other games, even ones that are more demanding.

I am beginning to think that it may just be an issue with Diablo.

If driver timeout happens, it means the GPU has stopped responding. Years ago that would mean hard reboot, nowadays, GPU can recover from this.
It’s most likely AMD issue, either their driver or hardware, or even operating system.
Try second BIOS setting if your card has it, mine has “overclock” and “silent” BIOS for example, I change it via physical switch on the card.
Also, Try everything on lowest possible setting in game, with vsync enabled or 30 fps cap. Then, decrease max TDP in Radeon settings to half of the value.
See if you have ANY crashes with this configuration. Then you can slowly restore changed settings one by one until you have crashes again.

Well, I can tell you what worked for me. I was getting random CTD anywhere from 60-90minutes of playing. I noticed my vram was constantly pegged at 12gb (I have a 12gb 6750xt). I set it to medium settings and have FSR on balanced. vram now stays around 10-11gb and I played 6 hours saturday and 8 hours sunday with no issues. Frame Rate Target Control is set to 60, no advantage of running this game any higher. no in game fps limits or vsyncs. Good luck!

I can confirm that, as of 7/17, this is still happening with the new 23.7.1 drivers on my 6800 XT. I would get constant crashes within seconds or minutes of entering any area with large amounts of characters (overworld areas, towns, etc.) but not dungeon instances. Messing with any in-game or AMD Adrenalin did nothing to help.

Removing the high-res texture pack helped stability, I can run the game for several hours without crashing. I first bumped the graphics settings down to medium (an insult to my 6800 XT but whatever), good stability so I bumped it to high and it eventually crashed after ~4 hours of good playtime.

Either way, removing the high res texture pack helped for now, it’s playable but I hope future drivers will improve stability.

I am having even worse crashes after the latest game update, patch 1.1.0.43391. Frequent CTDs, with a Fenris error.

I’m using the 23.7.1 driver.

It’s really frustrating because I can’t even complete any dungeons on my Season 1 character before the a driver timeout happens and Diablo 4 crashes.

Same Problem here. 5800x and 6900 XT. 4k 144 Hz Monitor. Random crashes where nothing helps accept Hard Reset. And sometimes I even have to reinstall my Displaydriver because its broken and I’m on standard Microsoft display Adapter. I can reproduce the black screen in one dungeon at the first Hallway. And it crashes often when I use the portal.
Newest drivers, bios and everything. Tried out every Radeon setting, nothing helps.
Took sometime to find this Thread here, to see that I’m not alone. Hope AMD or Blizzard will fix this asap. Greetings

the statues that i got are all gone in hardcore and nobody helps with anything just with generic answers…

This also worked for me, thanks! I’ve been trying everything short of reinstalling windows for about a week now

Well i bought a new:

  • power supply RM850x Shift
  • ram
  • motherboard
and reinstalled windows 11… now i get crashes to desktop with an Fenris error ID instead of straight up freezing requiring a reset.

Honestly, at this point, i think i’m done playing this game anyways.
