Am I tripping, or do characters look too genderneutral?

What do I mean exactly? Well, basically what I mean is the facial structure and in some cases the frames of the characters looking like they are trying to go for a “Neutral” appearance. Male characters not having too masculine frameworks, female not looking too feminine.

I am speaking mostly from playing with the character creator, where the preset options for the different characters did not look the most flattering. Most noticable was the Rogue looking like a twinky-boy before I put a beard on him. Barbarian looked better in that regard but I still put a beard on him so he at least looked like an intimidating presence. All the while my choices for a female Sorcerer were fairly limited when it came to making her look like a conventional female.

Has anyone else noticed or thought this, or am I just tripping?

On an unrelated note, can we press F to pay respects for the priest of Nevesk? Poor guy’s outing was quite brutal and genuinely unpleasant to watch. Maybe it’s just one of those rare instances of Blizzard doing something that seems genuinely impactful that leaves me feeling more impressed than I ought to be.

they’re probably going for the “body type 1 and 2” thing instead of male and female

I think you are tripping. Barbarian doesnt look gender neutral lol.

This is pretty standard now in games. It is a means to limit any potential backlash from the screaming heads. The fact you used the word Gender & don’t have 14,000 comments calling you a bigot is far more surprising in this day in age.

It does make it hard to have a char creation & not be able to make your char look the way you want them to. In the end it will be all about the gear. I will be happy as long as I get gear that makes me look like I hunt demons and not just woodcutting in the highlands.

I feel like it is more an attempt to create a system they might profit off of by selling a look. We will see.

Pretty much this, you have to please a broad audience.

Idk I think most of them just have realistic builds for their class type.

The rogue is shorter than the others and has a nice agile build. Being a big buff dude is not really the best for that type of class as stealth and agility are the focus. I don’t find this class gender neutural at all.

Female barbarian actually looks tough and not like some anime girl. Something I always hate in story games, movies, and books is when they have weak-looking female characters overpower huge buff dudes all the time. I love it when we get female characters that are actually strong enough to do it without plot armor. I find she looks pretty feminine too while also looking really tough.

Male Sorc does look a little odd and more neutral than the other classes but I find female Sorc fine.

You’re definitely tripping. Why this is even something you’re concerned about is weird.

They already are, you select “Body Type” instead of Sex/Gender. Which leads to… Well… Little differenciation between Male and Female and rather one singular framework with key differences being one being slightly smaller and having a bra on.

I often hear this line of thinking, but I have to wonder if it’s actually true or not.

I mean, I can’t see the average human being looking at a character creator and thinking “I would like for my character to look as neutral as possible”, because that just isn’t how the world operates. Granted thes probably don’t really think about it too hard or say much about it unlike the more invested gamer on the interwebs, but even my dad has commented that the characters look dumb.

I can certainly see it be a move to appeal to a certain group of people, but let’s be frank, they are such a minority that they really shouldn’t be catered to in the first place.

They just seem significant because they spend all day on Twitter ranting about something they didn’t like that day.

That is fair and all, but at the same time you’d think they’d have some definitions appropriate to their respective counterparts, so they didn’t look like someone modeled a semi-male character and then just shrunk it and added tiny breasts in order to make a female character.

I haven’t checked Fembarian, but I do take some issue with this framing. Come on now, it’s like you can’t have big strong women and have them look attractive. Think Fembarian from Diablo 3 or the Amazonians from Futurama, the kind of ladies that give men the fetish for big strong women crushing them with their thighs

cause people want to make a character they like? how hard is that to understand? why have a character creator at all then? u can’t fathom why people want more variety than ugly presets? according to your logic why shouldn’t we have art direction at all, just make everything ugly , the enviorment the bosses … people want to feel connected to a character they made and how they look, its not that hard to understand

It’s odd that you’re this worked up over this. Most games with some form of character creation are fairly limited. This one is no different.
If you can’t feel connected to a character because they look “gender neutral” then you have deeper issues than not enjoying a video game.

having only ugly presets is me having deep issues? if u dont care about it good for u, obviously people want real customization. sounds like ur projecting ur wokeness

  1. A beard is awesome and every character needs one. If you find the time to shave, you’re not doing everything you can to save Sanctuary. (Women with beards too!)

  2. The male Sorc looks skinny, but it’s a bookish nerd, so it fits. The Rogue needs to be nimble, but could look like a professional athlete a bit more (shoulders 5-10% broader is a good start).

  3. I don’t really mind the options you get, but that could just be me liking that I can actually make a character look somewhat how I want them to.

I prefer they just please their real audience!

Edit: I want my Lost Ark sorc textures!

I find it more weird seeing people NOT concerned about this.

I could go on about how the options for making your character aren’t good or that this is a trend to erase any distinction between male and female but I think you wouldn’t buy this, so I will put it more plainly: It’s a fairly objective downgrade in comparison to past games (cough Champions of Norath coughcoughcough). It’s honestly kinda funny yet sad to see games becoming more pretty and graphically intensive and yet ends up having characters becoming uglier as time goes on. And I’ve yet to see anyone give a compelling argument as to why it is a benefit to have player characters stand out in the world by looking so… Neutral.

Zombiehero also gave a pretty good reply to you as well as to why it might be seen as an issue to some players to have when it comes to these character creations.

Still doesn’t excuse the absolute lazyness of it.

Oh heaven forbid that people who see males and females looking distinct from one another to see the same be the case inside videogames…

Did you mistake the characters for Dwarves!? This ain’t Deep Rock Galactic where even the ladies get to play manly Dwarves with big fluffy and bushy beards. On that note I do agree that the beards are quite nice on the male characters.

Agreed with the Rogue, not so much on the Sorcerer. Mostly because the male Sorcerer in D3 certainly looked skinny, he still very much looked manly. A manly bookworm who could think of ten different ways of eviscerating you :stuck_out_tongue:

That is fair. I can also appreciate being able to make a character for myself, but I still can’t help but notice that I need to apply a beard in order to make my male characters look remotely masculine.

Well here is the truth. The computer generated characters in the game probably don’t care about their gender much lol. They wanna kill demons!

Exactly what they are. I never said they need to be ugly, they look great. Feminine with a nice face and body, attractive and very powerful.

They don’t, all of them have very realistic bodies for their gender and roles.

While rogues are pretty short in comparison they are very fit (just not gym bro over muscled), and look like the agile type of people. The females breasts are not tiny, just average. She has nice thighs too!

Same with the Sorc other then them having less muscle and longer limbs. They are tall and lanky.

Barbarians are roided up like the Rock and the females are basically the futurama amazons. On top of larger breasts you seem very interested in lmao… Something that is just horrible for combat. They have a thin waistline, clearly female even looking at them at a distance.

It’s harder to tell with Necro and Druid, Necro girl looks nice as far as I can tell Not a fan of female druids though just going by the one we see in the character creation but with all classes you pretty much have all body types covered. IDK about male Necro but male druid looks awesome.

Even Rogue doesn’t look like it too!

If you can’t figure out how to make your male character look male, that’s a you problem. I haven’t had that issue nor have any of my male friends who’ve made several male characters.

Sounds like manbaby whining to me more than legitimate criticism.
