8 Million+ copies sold but almost no retention

Yeah but these people will go on to play the next game in weeks or days. There is almost no reason to cater to these people instead of long term enthusiasts, or in other words: the ARPG crowd.

If you are doing sidequests and listening to the story and in the meantime try to tell level 90 people that they are doing something wrong then you are killing the game instead of saving it.

That’s cool but isn’t relevant to the discussion.

OP might be from PoE.

retention does fall flat after 1 week over there. would be inline with his thinking.

Catering to the hardcore crowd is how games die. Casual players are what make the games and give the games their most profit, not the 0.1% of players that play a nonsub game for a decade.

casuals are neat because they give the same money without being there as much. good value.

the other side of the medal is theyre “never” online and that might look bad for the stats like “daily active users” and such.

its like gyms, they like casuals that pay and never show up. but it looks bad if the gym is empty :stuck_out_tongue:

you want a healthy doze of both casuals and sweaty no-lifers.

The only example of casual arpg I can come up with is diablo 3 after the dlc. Every other title is hardcore.

Not sure what makes a guy buy a battlepass who is not willing to go further than level 70. He literally won’t get the rewards from the battlepass.

That means no money for blizz. You are contradicting what usually happens in ARPGs.

A very effective scam indeed.

the most worrying part is that i dont think there should be 6k people that hit 100.

100 should not be achievable yet, it should take some months for 1 person to hit 100.

So let me get this straight: because - in a little over a week (for the vast majority of players) - there’s only been 6,236 who have absolutely no-lifed the game to level 100… everyone else must have quit at level 50-60?

Perhaps the dumbest analysis of this I’ve ever heard.

If u do the battlepass and avle to finish it and not need to be 100 which means u get the cosmetics etc since u finished the season battle pass then i am fine with handing out 10 a month. But if u need to be 100 to finish the battle pass which i think will be the case then i wont be wasting my money

This post is delusional. Do you know just how much time it takes to get to 100?

No your take is completely off base. Semi casual with a regular 8-5 family 3 cats, outside activities 800 + hours in LE since purchase late 2021 and many times that in d3 since RoS. Casual arpg players generally stay playing the same game for quite a while with side trips to other arpg titles.

Look at d2r numbers compared to when it came out. That will happen to d4 mark my words cause both games have the 1 thing in common the grind to get to 100

Only Blizzard players world think that a game that doesn’t have a million people no lifing it to 100 the first week means it hasn’t retained anyone. It would take 12 hours of playing everyday solo to get to 100 by now.

Good point.

Then again blizz is like: Rush 100 and get ur name on a demon statue

They are literally promoting the playstyle of rush max level asap to a community of players of which a large part are old school diablo players who are crazy grinders

Diablo is typically considered a grindfest and not a casual campaign game for normies so here we are, devs are promoting rushfest and game is traditionally a grinder

Unless you use some exploit that give out 1 level per run.

Again, hard to follow.

  1. The Season duration is 3 months, not 1 month. Same with the Battlepass for the Season. It would be $10 for Cosmetics that you have 3 months to earn.
  2. I don’t think you need to be level 100 to complete it. VERY few people ever get to level 100.
  3. We can see what it looks like when Season 1 starts in mid to late July. You can make your decision after that. You can even complete the Season THEN buy the cosmetics if you want so that you know you are done.

Exactly and thats y they changed it cause they saw the retention. D2r had to add charms to counter immune mobs << hardcore players loved this. Make certian runewords almost impossible for a casual gamer to get.

I did upgrade several items. I dont know what you are trying to say with your post ?
It would be interesting to know what the service costs are at level 100 ? If someone has some knowledge on that, that would be nice to know

It takes a long time to get to level 100, in view of the threads topic + the games services cost a lot on the way up to level 100.

I’m 1 “bar” from htiting 70 on my barb, and have two other characters in their 30s. I think 3-4 months to hit 100 isn’t an issue. The renown MIGHT be, as finding lilith altars each season for the renown would be a bit tedious, but running the dungeons and doing the side quests not so much.

Im not sure why you get this indication that you have to be lvl 100 to complete the battlepass either. There is no indication of this, and battlepass “experience” in most games, are not tied to player experience, moreso when you can have 5 characters all earning points for the battlepass. It would likely be that the different World Tiers provide higher value of points for the tasks/achievements to earn the points for the battlepass. So people can’t presume to max out the battlepass by just doing the campaign over and over again on 5 or 6 toons on WT1(which would take like a week if you rushed it). Im sure there will be milestone points for hitting lvl 10/20/30, etc. with 100 giving a huge amount of battlepass points though. So hitting 100 on one toon should be just as rewarding to the battlepass as getting 5 toons to 60.

After the first week, where I I took the friday and monday off, I got about 40 hours of playtime from that Thursday at 1pm, until Tuesday morning around 1am. It was a fun little break from life, but NOW, I have to get back to my job, and THE WIFE(who also plays D4 but less frequently), leaving me 0-2 hours a day.

Yet, no other game is taking up my time at the moment. Will likely change when Starfield comes out though, so I will likely not partake in season 2 of D4, depending on the pacing.
