That said, the closer we get to release, the less Blizzard seems to be “supporting” modding within D2R.
PlugY, Median XL, PD2, PoD, are mods that come to mind that currently WILL NOT be supported, but I bet there are PLENTY of others out there that wont be supported.
The only mod that I can think of that might work is GoMule, but besides that… what “mod support” is Blizzard talking about? Because at this rate, it’s looking like Blizzard will not be supporting the modding community at all.
What mods do you know will work in D2R?
What mods do you know that wont work in D2R?
Yeah. They really need to be forthcoming with this.
If D2R releases, and mod support is lacking, that would definitely be ground for a post-launch refund.
You revealed that Resurrected is getting modding support – can you tell us a bit more about what that entails?
CL(Chris Lena): One of the things that has kept Diablo 2 alive is the modding community – so we appreciate all the work they have put into the game over the years. I think we can split this into two separate categories.
There have been mods in the past that injected code straight into the game, and those are the kind of things that we cannot support. But all the other mods – you know, the ones that use data and that sort of thing – we love to see those.
As we’ve gone through the game, we’ve switched a lot of things that used to be hardcoded into data. So when it comes to that [data] side of modding, there should be more things available and they’ll be easier to access.
I agree, I would love is Blizzard came out and defined what the tools will be for moders. Because currently they’ve removed/denied access to parts of the game that modders need.
I’m totally fine with them locking down their own personal battle.net and online servers. But denying the moding community access while removing previous support (TCP/IP support) all without providing an alternative path or information seems shady and anti modding to me.
Currently Blizzard is also killing offline single player mods. I’d have to say PlugY is the most popular Offline single player mod, and just a few days ago the developer stated they can not make the mod due to Blizzard not allowing it.
Update of 30 August 2021
Good news : PlugY 14.03 is out.
Bad news : I won’t do PlugY (infinity stash) for Diablo II Resurected because Blizard doesn’t allow modding (binary editing).
So again, I would love to know how Blizzard is “supporting” the modding community when it seems every day that goes by another mod is blocked by Blizzard.
My guess is that supported mods will be available through bnet client. Im not a sc player, but afaik there is mod support into bnet client for that game, thats what i think will happen with d2r.
Yeah this is a real shame. They originally said they’d be supporting mods and local multiplayer but have since gone back on it. Mods were supposed to be the main source for people who wanted significant changes, to make them happen. But without it, the community will continue to be a trash fire of people arguing about changes vs no changes.
I guess as long as single player mods are possible, then that might have to be enough for a certain portion of this crowd.
The rest will have to keep playing PD2 and PoD on the old client for the rest of time lol.
Ugh. This is bad.
Blizzard should really make a statement about this.
Only 19 days left to refund in (well, maybe more, if they have outright lied abot features, but that can be riskier).
If something as “simple” as Plugy cant be supported, then you cant remotely claim to allow mods.
Inb4 being called a called out for “blindly” supporting them but…
They’re not obligated nor required to tell us a single thing about the development process of their game. Much less anything related to something as integral as modding.
We don’t know what their plans are, furthermore if we knew something about a feature that they suddenly had to do pull a 160 on and remove it, most of the people here, twitch, twitter, reddit etc would be salty.
I implore you people to do a little research into how Public Relations tactics works so you can understand the little intricacies that go into the development of games. You’ll quickly find out why lack of communication works wonders and why titles like World of Wacraft (virtually any MMORPG nowadays, bar FFXIV) fail spectacularly with public engagement.
Until the game is out, we will not know what support will be included. (inb4 TCP/IP removal must automatically mean anti mod support).
For those who don’t want to risk the $40 without knowing, refund until the game is out. It’s all very simple.
This is becoming a huge letdown
First they remove ultrawide support despite claiming it would be supported on the game announcement. Then, they remove multiplayer mod support. Fine, I thought, I will still be able to mod my single player experience right? WRONG.
Im a huge fan of this game and time and time again they make me wonder my decision on whatever I keep my prepurschase or refund it entirely.
Literally the only thing that is holding me now is the upgraded graphics. EVERYTHING else the made the game good to me is getting demolished. If Im reconsidering a refund, imagine the average joe who isn’t that big into D2 would do. This is a disaster.
