What is an MVP?

Hi all,

I’ve been playing Diablo 3 since late 2018 only, and it’s the only video game I play. I don’t have much experience as far as video games are concerned, except for Diablo 3.

Of course, I’ve seen many comments by MVPs: I know they always appear in green, and they are always well documented, no matter whether they express a factual answer or an opinion. I know you can see the list of them here: cs-mvp - Diablo 3 Forums

But how do you become a Diablo 3 MVP? Do you need to have proven that you are a very skilled player thanks to epic ranks in the leaderboards? Do you need to have a certain number of posts on the forums?

Do MVPs have special tasks?

Are they Blizzard employees?

(Sorry if that’s an obvious topic for most of you. I’m just being curious…)

That’s a definite no. They’re just players like the rest of us. They have no connection to Blizzard, they have no special priviliges, etc.

There are two types of MVPs, community and support. Community MVPs are usually associated with a specific game(s), whereas support MVPs are typically game agnostic.

For example, I’m a support MVP (I’m not associated with D3 or any particular game). Some MVPs, like MissCheetah, are both community and support.

There’s not many community MVPs left these days but there are decent handful of support MVPs. (The bulk of the remaining community MVPs are for World of Warcraft.)

MVPs are recuited by Bliz. If a poster demonstrates a solid knowledge of a game or support concepts (and if Bliz is looking to recruit at the time) they will invite the person to join. If they accept, a contract which spells out the conditions of the position is signed. As a side note, how good a person is at playing a game is not a factor in the recruitment.

MVPs are solely volunteer. We are not employees, we are not paid in any form. The only ‘task’ that we have is to continue posting just like we did before becoming an MVP, in other words, don’t change anything.

The only perk we have is direct communication lines to our respective teams in Bliz. Support MVPs have lines to Bliz support, community MVPs have lines to Bliz community.

Many thanks, that’s very clear, Leviathan!

MVP is almost cruel fighter (>40% dmg)

One must demonstrate willingness to boot lick blizzard, and then further drive the point home by doing work for free.

Blizzard gets an unpaid shill & flashlight mall cop at the exact same time.

You have to give it to them, it is a clever way to avoid paying staff. Somebody might even be able to argue that they are violating labor laws.

To address a point in Mystix’s “contribution” above me, we aren’t required to agree or upsell or “shill”, etc for Bliz, and we get nothing if we do. In fact, we are encouraged by Bliz to overtly criticize them when we feel it’s necessary as long as we stay within the rules of the forums.

I’ve criticized Bliz’s decisions and actions plenty when I have felt it was deserved. For example, during the Heroes alpha, I critizied Bliz for pulling a bait and switch. I slammed them so aggressively that the thread was deleted and I was pulled aside because I indeed took it too far in terms of the forum rules (I was pretty pissed off). So yes, we do sometimes disagree and are allowed, encouraged in fact, to voice it.

Unfortunately, some lazily fall back on the “shill” cliche simply because they were disagreed with… because we didn’t hop on the bandwagon.

Looks like we could use a new MVP title to put on some posters: Most Vicious Person

And thumbs up to Leviathan :+1:
