I love this tune.
What always make me laugh is the line:
“and when He died
all He left us was a loan”
Many people hearing this believe the lyric’s are
“all he left us was alone”
but daddy only showed up to see momma on the day checks arrived
and he never paid his loans off.
Daddy was a bum.
This great Temptations tune is a tongue in cheek song by these great guys!

There’s a great debate whether it was “alone” or “a loan”. Personally I agree with you that it fits better with “a loan”.
Not the subject here, to know how people hear/understand the songs.
