Should we postpone the Release?

And yet Brevik and the Schaeffer brothers acknowledge that there are even things that they would change in D2 given the clarity of hindsight

and so what? art is art. you graspin all the time.

For D2, what was the best art? Wasi t the game at release, patch 1.09, 1.10 (after all the big names left Blizzard North), or 1.14? Does updating the graphics in D2R change the aesthetic? Can art be improved upon? Does changing the game to support wide and ultrawide monitors change the underlying game?

i know what you trying to do, you very intelligent.

Doesnā€™t mean their modern changes would make the game better.

Correct. However, certain modern changes almost certainly make the game better for the overwhelming majority. Auto-gold pickup is a modern feature. Does that make the game better that we are now being given that option if we choose it?

I would argue that there are many changes if made optional would make the game far better for those who had the freedom to choose what they prefer. If you do not like auto-gold pickup, turn it off. Like the modern feature, turn it on.

and yet Bravik for years claimed D2 canā€™t be remasteredā€¦

He created an amazing game but thatā€™s it.
Looking at some of his ā€œrecentā€ opinions especially after he saw what VV are capable of i woulndā€™t trust him with anything.

Infact given how gaming world wide progressed i doubt heā€™d create anything as amazing as D2 in this era of gaming. The ā€œcurrent playerbaseā€ attitude he has would probably end up making something similar to D3.

Im not saying D2 is flawless nahā€¦ we all know some QoL are coming and probably even more to be announced but brining many of the modern mechanics to D2 is in my opinion not a good idea.

I do not think he ever claimed it can not be remastered. I think he said it would be quite difficult to do it accurately.

As the alpha showed, changing the screen from 4:3 dimensions to supporting 16:9, 21:9 and 32:9 created differences in the gameplay (how monsters aggro, where players can attack and teleport that affects both PvM and PvP), resulting in a remaster that no longer accurately recapitulates D2.

That is something that cannot be avoided given hardware people use these days.
Itā€™s not negotiable, even hard-brain purist would udnerstand that brining remaster into the current hardware is something that is needed.
So considering this as a ā€œchangeā€ is a very bad example.

Unless you think purists would prefer to play on CRT monitors, in that caseā€¦

It can be avoided. You just have the game set not to use the full screen on modern monitors.

It is a change and it has been complained about.

Currently, a player with an ultrawide monitor (32:9) can attack another player in PvP where that other player can not even see his opponent if on a 16:9 or 21:9 screen. Moreover, distance attacks can be launched where AI of attacked monster activates the monster but it does not approach the attacker like normal. Presumably Blizzard will fix this but currently that is how it was in the alpha.

In one of the Blizzard interviews, this topic was asked and I think the answer was weā€™re looking into it.

I know how it looks on ultra wide screen. Itā€™s horribly unbalanced and yeah itā€™s an alpha so hopefully it will be fixed for biggest screens.

My point was there are some things that canā€™t be avoided when remastering, some changes that are necessary in order for the game to work properly while not giving huge adventage to some like in UW screens case.

Agreed. My point is that it is a false claim that some make that nothing announced in D2R changes gameplay. The simple fact is that gameplay is affected even by allowing the game use the full screen on modern monitors and ultimately choosing to click/not click gold piles was part of D2. For the latter, I would not say this was challenging, engaging, or fun, but it still was part of the ā€œD2 experienceā€ and potential RSI/carpal tunnel syndrome-inducing.

What constitutes an authentic D2 experience?

This question is trending everywhere. Itā€™s currently being thrown around in Denmark and Norway to invalidate our heritage, and promote immigration in its place. The question belittles the complexity of the subject matter by demanding the impossible: To return a short and concise answer on a subject that would normally require a 500+ page analysis. And now we apparently have to be graced with these types of questions in computer game communities.

Thereā€™s only one answer befitting such a questions, and that is: ā€œIf you donā€™t know, then let those of us who doā€” make the decisions.ā€

I donā€™t see a reason to delay as of yet. If theyā€™re struggling to fix character art for asssasin/amazon then maybe but theyā€™re on the right track with most of what they have so far.

From what i have seen from the ā€œleakā€ stuff games pretty much done, i want it out yesterday lol.

What ā€œleakā€ stuff?

At least the first interview from Rob Gallerani post-technical alpha left the impression that they were still working on many things. Blizzard even sent out their 2nd survey (this one was post alpha) which leads me to believe that there are still deciding at that time some game features.

i donā€™t wanna say tbh, you either know or you donā€™t.

Of all of the holdups to delay release, I would argue that this is one of the least significant. I do no spend my time in the character selection screen, but playing the game that has an isometric viewpoint where the character models details (e.g. their face) is barely visible.

I think they wouldnā€™t either - but the rest of the game from what we have seen so far looks right. Maybe ironing bugs relating to duping or otherwise, but them wanting to get the art right for release could maybe be a concern that they may take seriously whether its warranted or not

let me first start off withā€¦ this thread is VERY ā€œclick-baitā€ i mostly came here opt tell you thatā€¦ but threading the post

This is a terrible assumption to make

if i am the manager and i tell the teamā€¦ NO BALANCE CHANGES ALLOWED.
just fix bugs and do a graphical remasterā€¦ and they do an amazing job at thatā€¦ ( which i agree, they have so far)

and suddenly u trust them with balance changesā€¦ no
thatā€™s horrendous.

i dont trust ANYONE with balance changes.

if i were to trust someone with balance changes they would need to prove that they know HOW to properly balanceā€¦ which is something i havent seen from blizzard.

i HAVE seen that they know how to do a visual upgradeā€¦ so yeah i trust them with that.
i saw that the druid werewolf run run looked terrible when people cracked the beta to get acess to himā€¦ but yeah its not doneā€¦ and they HAVE proven to know how to go a graphical remaster.

but NOT TOUCHING balance does NOT show they know HOW to balanceā€¦ it just showed they know they arnā€™t allowed to implement any ideas they DO. haveā€¦ not that the ideas they had are ā€œgoodā€

thatā€™s a pretty key difference.

This is what i came here to answerā€¦
and the answer isā€¦ WHO THE HELL KNOWS???
we dont know how far they areā€¦ we dont even have a release quarter let alone month or day. the only ā€œissueā€ i have seen from watching alpha stream i would delay a release for is the fact there are loading screens between tpsā€¦ As outside thatā€¦ everything else looks like it can be fixed.

but again we havenā€™t seen act 3-5 or the other 4 classesā€¦ so weā€™re basically running blind on this questionā€¦

i want lootfilter, and a charm inventory, but would i delay the game for those? noā€¦
i woudlnt even delay the game to implement anni, although i would be pretty made if they didnā€™t have the new spawn method ready by releaseā€¦ and i would be furious if it wasnā€™t really by season 2

all i need is a graphical remaster, other QOL fixes can waitā€¦ i would certainly WANT them by release but i wouldnā€™t delay itā€¦ its a hell of a lot easier to patch things in nowadays than it was back in 2000.
