Chaos Items

Randomly generated seasonal items

This season drops chaos items instead of:

  • set items
  • legendary items
  • legendary gems

Chaos items:

  • are full RNG
  • use Smart Drop
  • drop at any level
  • have no durability
  • are account bound
  • are identified at drop
  • can roll a chaotic power *
  • have no level restriction
  • drop only in seasonal play
  • roll up to 7% damage reduction
  • are recycled when season ends
  • roll powerful affixes (Ethereal level)
  • can roll multiplicatively damage increase
  • can only be dropped by monsters, chests, and destructibles
  • can roll a passive class skill if it rolled an affix targeting 1 class
  • cannot be enchanted, reforged, or altered using Ramaladni’s Gift
  • can be equipped by followers (all skills empowers followers skills)

There will be Diablo 3 seasons after the launch of Diablo 4.
Just like there were Seasons of Diablo 2 during Diablo 3.

Enthusiasts gamers could even expect a Diablo 3 Remaster.
That would be awesome to replay Diablo 4 with high resolution textures and high polygons models.

I don’t think Diablo 4 is near to be released.
I would say minimum 2 years before release.
There are still lots of ongoing questions on monetization.
The rejection of Diablo Immortal’s business model probably changed some points of view at Blizzard.

Diablo 4 could follow the release model of Baldur’s Gate 3.
Release Act I in early access, and collect feedback.

The seasonal theme described in this proposal, introducing Chaos items, could be simply used for Diablo 4, like a permanent realm, a parallel universe with its own rules, somehow acting like a mod, against an entry fee of $1.

For example, in Starcraft II, the paid mod Desert Strike is very popular.

What do you think of this seasonal theme ?
Anything that could go wrong with the rules ?

You mentioned items could disappear, if that happened without warning such as during combat or such that you don’t notice you no longer have such and such item anymore, it would be a disaster and honestly the opposite of what a loot hunt game should be. Once you find an item it should be yours forever, the idea that they can just vanish sounds horrible to me.

Also, the loss of Legendary Gems seems excessive, unless there is something else to replace them.

Probably D4 is already fully released, consider season now is like 4 months.

The idea was to dynamize the season at mid-season.

Like a new start.

New powers are released, but for the sake of balance, some powers have to disappear.

How would you fix this ?

There are lots of balance issues with Legendary Gems, 50% of them are unused, or just played again and again, bringing Diablo fatigue.

Also, Legendary Gems play the same role as Legendary Powers, most of them directly buff damage, which is quite uncreative.

The idea of this Seasonal Theme is to dynamize the power increase through RNG.

The more you play, the more you are (statistically) rewarded.

Add new items with the new powers using the same slot as the old ones so that wearing the new power item replaces the older one, but the old one still exists and you can swap between them as desired. I am fine with having more options and choices, just not with having hard work and effort put toward something simply being taken away.

Some gems are vital to build integrity and removing them will severely handicap some builds. For example Wildebeast for shields, Gogok for CDR, Boon of the Hoarder for Avarice and gold farm, LoD should be obvious (a huge entire set of builds would be off the table without this one), Gem of Ease…

Chaos items roll up to 7% Damage reduction.
7% x 13 = 91% Damage reduction.
That should be plenty enough.

CDR, or variations of this power, could be the basis of some generic, cross-class chaotic powers as they do not directly buff the damage.

They would need to be heavily conditionned.

As the most popular Legendary Gems are directly buffing global damage, for the sake of the balance and diversity, all of Legendary Gems have to be erased from existence in order to let the RNG shine.

One might say that even static chaotic powers would be the anti-thesis of both RNG and Chaos.

You wouldn’t love the end of Avatar The Last Airbender (“I am taking your power away !”).

They can appear or disappear during the season.
New powers can emerge during the season.

That sounds like an extreme amount of server processing given there would be 3x powers changing on 13 items per character every 10 seconds (not to mention whatever you have for follower gear, will there be chaos items to emanate there too?). I would expect that to generate more lag than the recent Necro glitch, but on a much grander scale since it would be applied to every single player in the game not just the ones who were glitching Necro powers.

Also, it sounds possible of build breaking combos where suddenly you lose all damage potential, or your defense vanishes, and you just die instantly without knowing how or why. Especially for HC that would be a nightmare.

Next. Conquests. Every season has them and unless a very specific set of them was built into the season then some of them would be entirely impossible. Such as the Set Dungeons conquest. Not to mention the 2 parts of season journey which require Set dungeons.

And there goes the Avarice conquest.

Also, Haedrig’s Gift, well since we can’t have sets what use would that be then.

Also, the Cube, if there are no legendaries, then no powers for that. Can Chaos items be upgraded to ancient or primal? What happens when we use the upgrade rare item, does the cube explode and kill everyone in town? What about the reforge legendary recipe?

Wrong. I loved that entire series.

Is he up to S487 yet? Have any of his proposals been implemented?

Also, missed adding this bit in my previous reply… Gold is needed for more than just repair. It’s also needed to empower GRs, buy the Hellfire patterns, etc. Much more than just repairs.

Not that much since Convention of Elements does this every 4 seconds and damage type goes checked on server.

But I agree this would be very unpredictable in terms of performance / D3 Planner.

Chaos cannot be altered.
Chaos remains untouched.

That said, players can drop Ancient and Primal seniority for Chaos items.

Without Puzzle Rings, Goblin’s portals to The Vault will be rare, unless their apparition rate is increased.

In general, gold will be harder to find by regular means.
Seems a good evolution to me.

The Rift Challenge, every week, should provide plenty of gold.
(4.6 million, whereas HellFire plan costs 5 million)

In last resort, players can sell their Chaos items if necessary.

That is one item which not everyone wears. What you are suggesting is 3xPowers on 13x Worn Items. Plus X times items in inventory at any given moment, plus X times items in stash. For every single player in the game. You are talking literally hundreds or even thousands of computations per player every 10 seconds. That would melt the servers. Now if you managed to somehow limit the randomizing to only the equipped items (which I figure would be near impossible to do), that would still remain a game breaking amount of computations per character every 10 seconds.

And there goes yet another favored part of the game, gone. I and my friends love running the vaults together, we especially get together to run the ancient vaults.

And given that Bovine Bardiche would also be gone there goes the Cow Level too, yet another extremely fun and favored activity just tossed out the window.

Since Whispers of Atonement for augmenting items are technically Legendary gems, those would be out too, so no reason to have ENs either, another game activity gone (not that it was a very good one, but still).

I absolutely hate that thing. I do it once at the start of season to get a jumpstart and then never again until the next season. Most of them are so broken they are not even remotely fun and often not even possible without extreme luck.

So what is left then? No Puzzle Vault, No Cow Level, unless we somehow get luck on a goblin kill. No EN, or at least no reason to run them. No reason to run bounties (not that I would miss that bit). So all we would be doing the entire time is running Nephalem and Greater Rifts the entire time endlessly. Sooooo Fun… (sarcasm)

To be fair I have seen a lot of your proposals have at least some merit, but this one sounds like an utter and complete nightmare both from a development and playing standpoint…
