S25 Feedback: Awful itemization in Soul Shard upgrading

It seems Blizz took a page from the 1.x page of itemization for soul shard upgrades. Those that played it will remember that item drops, even class specific ones, would have completely random stats that had nothing to do with the class character that got the item. For example, having a wand drop for a wizard character that would have strength or dex instead of int on it.

Especially given how rare the ember drop rate is, having my DH upgrade a shard and suddenly end up with 1k int instead of dex is just BS. Thatā€™s garbage. I had to spend 2 embers to get the rank 2 stats and those stats include 1002 Intelligence?

I canā€™t imagine that this functionality was missed in the PTR. I did do a quick check on the PTR feedback and I donā€™t see any complaints on the matter.

Do better blizz.

Erghā€¦ These soul shards are OP items, you dont need perfect stats to kick start, eventually better ones will be found. If smart rolls are placed in, will be too easy to gear up. Dont forget 3rd rank shard gives 125 caldesanns. You suppose to use bad ones as augmenta

I think this theme, blizzard did best they can under current situations. Its 2 days into season only.

No. You do better

Youā€™ll get more embers when you can go higher (and faster). Did you play season 24? And did you get the best possible ethereal on day three of the season?

Well over 95% of the ethereals that dropped for me were correct for the class I was playing. Most of them were garbage.

You claim that Iā€™m asking for ā€œperfectā€ or OP items, which strikes me as an intentional misrepresentation of what Iā€™m asking for. Iā€™m asking for class-specific rolls on the shards. They donā€™t have to be perfect, just appropriate.

I think itā€™s intentional that the main stats are random, just like the other levels of random from level one to three. Weā€™ll be expected to do a lot of upgrades in order to get the best shards. Lots of upgrades lots of playtime :grinning: Lots of fun? Hopefully.
Anyway, even poor shards have a use for augments or if you decide to play enother class. Also even 1002 int will give 100 resistance.

I think the idea behind the current RNG is that, unlike weapons, soul shards are class-agnostic. Any class can use any shard. So, if your DH rolls INT on a soul shard, you can either use it for augmentation, or save it for your WD, Wiz or Necro (assuming you have any).

Sometimes a shard can be so good for another class that one might want to go that class, just to try it out. And you can still use it for augs after that.

In a pre-nerf state, maybe. As it stands is 20% Holy going to suddenly make me want to roll a Crusader? No. After several rounds of nerfs the good rolls on a shard canā€™t overcome the useless ones.

I think the OP has a point, tbh. Games have gone to smart loot systems less because of efficiency and more because of feel. It just feels way worse to get something that simply canā€™t be used vs something thatā€™s just sub-optimal. At the end of the day youā€™re scrapping it either way, but there is a psychological difference.

Roughly half of the non-set legendaries in game are class-agnostic, yet they still drop as smart loot. When you craft sets with the blacksmith, you get class-specific rolls. When you reroll at the mystic, you get class-specific rolls.

Blizz realized that ā€œDumb lootā€, like what was in D3 1.x was a bad design. Smart loot is superior. The dumb loot soul shard upgrade system is an inexcusable and a huge step back.

its a page from d2 days. just being random, means you want to keep going for those content to get that epic item.
the items are also not a waste as those shards can still be used to augment your gear.
Easiest solution is add it as a cube recipe with a gem, but i like it the way it is.

Statements completely devoid of any factual basis. The ethereals, an explicitly announced d2-throwback, werenā€™t even random.

If I wanted to play d2, I would. Iā€™m playing d3. Random in d3 had been a proven garbage system.

Ethereals were fail, and so are shards/embers. Only good for getting imperials while levelling.

Well then:
Thereā€™s no need to stay
If you donā€™t wanna play

Stop. What did you say? The shards can be augmented?

Iā€™ve just making them to 3rd level and thought that is all.

Damn, I totally forgot about that. Iā€™m now Derpman.

Ahemā€¦

At p800, Iā€™ve found 20 upgrade consumables. So thatā€™s basically 7 leveled soul shards. At mere p800. If you actually play beyond the starter weekend, youā€™re gonna get like 50-100 leveled soul shards before long. The rng is fine. Itā€™s supposed to be an endgame maximization thing. And if I miss? Well, Iā€™m loving the free 125 augs for my season progress.

I get almost ten embers per gift.

That is probably the single most valid point.
They are class-impartial other than ā€˜essence of anguishā€™ which only gives maximum benefit to WD and Necro (poison). That is of course is if you get int and not dex or str with it.

EDIT: - I did find using gem of efficacious toxin can trigger it in the PTR, randomly though, if you get dex or str on a non-WD or Necro - but itā€™s not as effective.

As a side note, if your weapon has poison damage it will work there too. :stuck_out_tongue:

I was able to keep the stacks maxed nearly 100 percent of the time. Granted I havenā€™t leveled it yet, and its useless unless you have poison damage but its an interesting item. Great for glass cannon builds.

Each wasted shard is a lvl 125 leggo gem for augments tho way better than farming 125 gems with gr farming. Also i like my monk finding gems for my barb ETC. Love how it works tbh
