Rod Fergusson just confirmed no chat or lobbies for console

Do you agree with me that it’s pretty childish release D2R for consoles with no lobbies, chat, and keyboard & mouse?

I mean does it really take a rocket scientist to understand these features are essential to gameplay?

Yes, ladders cross between all platforms and regions. It is a Global ladder. Cross progress is a feature that lets you play on any platform with the same character.

Is it a poor business decision? Yes. Is it “childish”, no. I am not sure how software development and game features, or lack of, could be childish in any way.

Childish is pulling a tantrum when not getting your way, or on the good side, having the glee of experiencing things for the first time.

Being honest I will still buy this after word of console lobbies and a way to communicate.

I can understand the lobby situation some what…
But a way to communicate missing from a game… it’s 2021… what in the world… how is this even missing … my mind is blown… … … … … … … … … … … … … blown!

Same to me no more free money

Right right Blizzard is the greatest company on earth. They have made very successful great games like Warcraft 3 Reforged. How dare I question Blizzard failing to add LOBBIES, CHAT AND KEYBOARD AND MOUSE TO D2R FOR CONSOLES

Thanks for the quick reply.

So not only do consoles not get lobbies we have to compete on ladders against players who do have lobbies on PC, meaning we have less access to grouping and trading. Meaning we have no chance.

Another terrible decision :frowning:

This is unfortunate for sure. I also cancelled my PS5 pre-order. I’ll probably just pick it up during a sale at some point in time.

Tormented Souls, Maneater DLC and Fatal Frame : Maiden of Blackwater are all releasing soon so I’ll spend the money on them. Not to mention Grim Dawn is still slated for an XBOX release.

We’ll see what is in the forecast.

Nobody said you could not question it. However your question was answered. It won’t be in the Console game for Sept 23 release.

You don’t have to like that.

What you were told was no amount of yelling will change that.

Yikes didn’t even consider how much easier it will be for them to progress with the ability to do custom game searches. Just keeps getting worse each time I hear others logic why this killed console.

It isn’t childish, but one could call it shortsighted. All consoles from XB1/PS4 on up have KB/M APIs built in, but it is up to the developer to implement them. For what it’s worth, D2R is definitely not an anomaly. Even Path of Exile, a game arguably better suited for KB/M if you want to experience it to the fullest, does not have that mode on consoles even four years after first coming to the XB1 and two years later to the PS4.

From what I can ascertain it appears that the prevailing design decision for D2R was to ship with functional controller support as that is the primary input method for consoles (they all come with a controller and none come with a KB/M which is an aftermarket purchase) and then add in KB/M when they are either able to or get a bead on user numbers. Remember, virtually every major feature and/or design decision from non-indie game develoeprs is corporate controlled if it is a publicly traded company or like Blizzard a subsidiary of a publicly traded company.

TL;DR speak: It’s a return on investment and shareholder decision. Nothing more, nothing less.

Edit: Also, something to keep in mind is that a Sept. 23rd release date gives Activision-Blizzard a week of sales data for their Q3 financial report. That’s the critical piece of the puzzle here - that date wasn’t chosen randomly. It should have been pushed back, but shareholders and/or management demanded it in Q3, not Q4. So decisions were made on what to leave out in order to ship on time.

IF blizzard makes half the amount of money they were expecting to make from console sales then it will change. I don’t care that Rod Ferguson said they won’t implement it. IF BLIZZARD IS going to MAKE $0 on CONSOLES THEY WOULD CHANGE and ADD LOBBIES/CHAT it IN A SECOND.

I have a feeling that this “cross-progression” was only ever designed for people that will be away from their desktop and will take their console (specifically Switch) with them to do some solo stuff. They didn’t say that, but that’s what it feels like.

THATS GREAT AND ALL nice story. BUT BLIZZARD NEEDS TO ADD LOBBIES, CHAT AND, Keyboard AND MOUSE TO CONSOLES

He said they won’t implement it for the Sept 23rd release. That won’t change.

He did not say it would never be implemented.

HE DIDN’T SAY THEY WOULD IMPLEMENT it EITHER.

You know, that reminds me that Titan Quest also didn’t come with KB&M support. Neither do many other ports. The list is actually very small of games that do support it. Not even Neverwinter Nights Enchanced Edition.

Makes me wonder what the technical difficulty of that side of porting things is.

BRO ON DAY 1 THEY SHOULD HAVE MADE IT A PRIORITY to have LOBBIES, CHAT, and Keyboard and MOUSE SUPPORT.

Return on investment. Time and work hours spent developing, testing, and deploying the feature vs. number of players it would bring in, coupled with the fact that controllers are the primary input method on consoles as mentioned above.
