PVP is healthy for an ARPG, and it drives sales

yes and without real PvP.
-that was, in certain cases added through mods from devs or 3rd parties.

that is in fact, a perfectly stated opinion.

Hmmm… That original statement was towards the person saying that ARPG’s are going stale. And I was pointing out that is false. Number of players have only been growing in the genre. The genre isn’t stale at all.

But on the subject of PvP in ARPG’s. I am not against it. I see no reason why they shouldn’t have PvP. I just believe you overestimate the impact it has on a player base in an ARPG. The main reason is that no matter what PvP is linked to PvE. To stay competitive, you will have to grind PvE content to get gear for PvP. It’s not one or the other. PvP is an endgame. Which means you are either enjoying the ARPG already or are willing to do PvE so you can enjoy PvP.

To be honest, the best PvP implementation I have seen in an ARPG came from PoE’s april Fools joke when they implemented Battle Royale. I know this isn’t the best implementation for the people who enjoy the competitiveness of PvP. But for fun, it was definitely the best PvP I have seen in an ARPG. It also removes the PvE aspect from PvP.

In the other genres, there is no trade off. You get the game for the sole purpose of PvP. If someone bought an ARPG for the PvP they will be disappointed in the amount of work they are going to have to put in to enjoy it.

In the end, PvP helps with replayability but doesn’t do much with increasing the player base.

Pvp brings with it a balancing nightmare, i would not mind if they kept it out of d4.

Open PVP isn’t real?

Yeah, they announced something like that when they presented D3 as well. See how it turns out.
Btw - “pvp areas” is precisely what D3 has, only there it’s called “brawling”.

that is not sure, maybe PvP offers PvP gear.

i see PvP as a feature, hopefully indeed instanced from the start.

fair enough, but then the RPG isn’t the matrix anymore, it should never be the case in a core aRPG.

true! and i’ve seen that ‘happen’ on many RPG fora.

PvP can be an ok feature in a core RPG, as an instanced feature.
and hey lol, i do think it gives a boost to playercount.

How do you do PVP right in a game that has its mechanics and skills and gear fundamentally based on PVE?

Can my HotA Barb really win a PVP showdown against a Multishot DH? A Wol Monk? Even against a Zuni WD with all the pets in between? If D4 has open world PVP, is it even worth considering a melee build?

i luv you;
you have the reflex in thinking that i like.

By totally breaking and ruining PVE trying to balance a useless PVP. That’s how.
And this is why PVP has to go. Or be locked into the little brawling corner where it belongs.

PVP wasn’t integrated into the game for what one year, two years? Yeah, let’s not remind ourselves about that whole ordeal. The pvp that they did attempt to “wiggle” themselves into, added insult to injury. It was all down hill from there.

As it stands now, even in a demo, a pre-alpha version of the game, items and how they can effect pvp are already incorporated. It’s looking real fine for diablo fans who also enjoy pvp.

great stuff, finally some posters that get vocal against a vocal majority.

There was nothing visible of pvp at all save for a 1 second clip of a barb jumping on a wiz girl. And what they announced - special zones for PVP, no extra balancing - is precisely what is in D3 right now. And nobody is interested in it. Never saw a post about how new builds affect brawling.

ah yes, i meant it was avoidable with a ‘button’
-and i hope, in the d4 core aRPG, that button will not be needed, because all PvP will be instanced.

D2 was definitely a very high quality game for the time. But it was also the sole representation of the genre. I don’t feel like it being a best selling game of the year really takes away from the genre itself being niche.

Replayability, for sure. Player base… That’s up for debate. There are so many other issues with D3 to say that PvP is really what made the difference.

Chris himself said they did. His paraphrased words were ‘We tried to do things with PvP earlier on in the development of PoE, but no one was really interested, so we just abandoned it’

I will end this discussion with, if you’re observant enough (something of a prerequisite to shine in actual pvp [let’s stop considering d3 brawling pvp {you have the entire pvp community to support you on this}]) you’ll see that on an item the stats read something like 5.5% damage reduction against players. Take care of yourself now.

Remember that the two games that created all the glorious legacy of diablo saga (D1 and D2) had trades and pvp.
And d3 had trades and pvp in vanilla, it’s just that ROS tainted everything.

Yeah that will totally make a difference in a fight, sure.

D3 never had any PVP other than the brawling which was introduced later.

i’ve a little story on this;
in AION, a P2P MMO, you encountered obligated PvP in open world at ± 2/3 of the game played.
-i had great fun there and left the game when i needed to enter the PvP zones to continue, very bad experience, because i loved the game until then.

During vanilla era, and brawling it’s PVP, a pretty bland PVP but it’s still PVP

Simply not true. Zero PVP in D3 vanilla.
