As the title says, I’d love to see controller support come to the PC version of the game.
Like many, I’m not particularly enjoying D4 and I’d really like to be able to play D3 on my steam deck. Seems like a great time to add the feature to this game and capitalize on the failure of D4 until it’s in a better spot.
It was made with that as a feature, as was D2R and D4. D3 was not.
Money. It would take significant resources to make controller usable in D3, resources they would never recuperate. It took a year and a half after PC release to get a console version, and the two are basically different games.
Significant resources to add pad support? I don’t think so. Besides, we are talking ActiBlizz here: they have more resources than all competitors in this genre combined.
well they don’t even have to use their resources just reach out to the modding community to do the heavy lifting after all when EA put out that SimCity reboot they claimed an offline mode would be difficult to implement requiring months of work by their dev team and a bunch of amateur modders made it happen in a single weekend all it would take is maybe a small hotfix to help integrate the software on their end
Yep. It’s way more complex to accomplish than most people tend to think. A lot of stuff need to be created from scratch.
And this is the other issue, no doubt the biggest one. Just because resources exist doesn’t mean they’re willing to spend them without a plan to recoup them. It’s basic business, they don’t make investments just for giggles, they expect profit in return. An 11 year old game on its last legs and no ongoing monetisation is really not something they want to invest significantly.
DevilutionX is a free mod for Diablo 1 that adds controller support. So, the argument that a billion dollar corporation like ActiBlizz would need “significant” resources/investment to do the same for D3 does not hold to scrutiny.
Not to mention that the addition of controller support may well generate new interest in the game again and so additional revenue.
Again, you fail to understand basic business. Modding is basically a charity but for a corporation like ActiBlizz there is no such thing as charity. An investment must produce a profit. If they deem something is not worth the investment, no matter how small that investment might be, they’re not going to do it.
The only way D3 makes any additional revenue is when people buy new copies. D3 is after all B2P game with no ongoing monetisation. Adding controller support would bring so tiny revenue at this point that the result would be a net loss.
You a shareholder of ActiBlizz or what? With mentality like this, Blizzard does not need to care or listen to the player base (in fact they already do ). Just maximize profit and to hell with fans of Diablo franchise.
How do you explain ongoing seasonal content for D3 then? Why do they bother with a game on “its last legs” and no ongoing monetization?
You don’t know that unless you have done market research or asked the community.
Goodwill until they could release their next flagship in the franchise, ongoing seasonal support that now will stop.
You don’t think the multi billion dollar company would have added the feature if they would have made money on it? They have all the numbers and made the choice they made for a reason.
These two are jokers lol talking like they know how resource-intensive it would be and that it would absolutely not generate a return. They have no clue.
It is very likely that assets (UI, etc) could be recycled from the console version of the game.
I don’t know for sure, but I would be shocked if it took more than a few hundred copies sold to recover the resources required to add this feature.
They did, which is why D3 was released on Switch and Playstation at a later date. And now the Steamdeck is opening new opportunities, not to mention growing nr of PC players who prefer to play with controller. According to Valve, “around 10% of Steam gaming sessions are played with controllers” and those stats were published last year.
So, there is a lot of sense in what OP asked for, whether you like it or not
Steamdeck is projected to reach 3 million units sold in total by end of year, so a tiny market.
I have no opinion one way or another. Facts are facts though, it won’t happen for previously mentioned reasons.
I have voiced no opinion on the matter.
So under 3 grand is your estimate? Rofl.
We do know Blizzard have said they won’t add it, and we know the game has been out for 11.5 years and still lack the feature. Additionally we know that Blizzard have stated that season 29 will be the last new development and focus going forward is D4.
