No Mac client for DiabloIV?

Deeply disappointed to see that at the opening ceremony just days after finding that there was no Warcraft 3 Remastered Mac client.

As a long time Blizzard player who started with Diablo one on an Apple computer all those years ago I feel very excluded.

Have they specified the supported OS’ yet? I did not think they had gotten into that level of detail yet. They have a more info panel after the opening ceremony.

That said, we don’t have an OW Mac client either, unless that has changed. The graphics support on Mac is apparently not up to it. Someone who knows more about Macs should chime in.

Yes they did
PC, XBox, PS4

I was deeply disappointed as well. It started with Overwatch, of course, but if Blizzard abandons the Mac, I’ll be abandoning Blizzard.

You would be better off directing that anger at Apple who won’t make hardware that keeps up with game engines.

The graphics support line is … simply not true, but there’s no point in discussing it here because it will just invite trolls.

I play on Linux with PlayOnLinux + Wine.

Diablo 2 for eg, on M$ windows i can only run windowed, but on Linux, i can run fullscreen with wine.

MissCheetah, that is just … an uninformed remark.

Entirely possible. I don’t use Macs and am not an expert on them. I am going off the explanations of why they did not include Mac for OW. There are others here who can explain it far better than I can.

“It was a result of not having all the technological support we needed to make the game viable on Mac systems.” says Kaplan, referring to Apple’s policies with OSX. “We have a real love and dedication for Mac players, they’ve been extremely loyal to us and we love giving them Blizzard games.
“But when dealing with the PC, the Xbox One and the PS4 - all of which are extremely welcoming to the technological needs to run a next-generation shooter - in a lot of ways we felt left behind, that we weren’t given the support we needed to make a great product on the Mac.”

Kaplan acknowledged Blizzard’s longstanding support for the Mac, but said there are technical challenges surrounding a OS X version.
“Currently with the technology behind Macs and the way Overwatch runs it’s just too challenging for us at this point to support it,” Kaplan said. “Our focus right now is entirely on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.”

TL;DR: Mac / Apple hasn’t given the Blizzard the components & support they need to release Overwatch for those devices, at least yet.

As of 2019 Jeff Kaplan still says it is a Tech limitation with the Apple platform, not OW.

Actually the Mac’s are quite capable of playing D3 with full 5k resolution at high FPS. Have you ever looked at Apple’s hardware-accelerated Metal graphics API, which replaces aging OpenGL? If not please don’t go saying that i7 based Macs running Unix which plays D3 way too easy is not capable.

Why do you buy a computer that is clearly not for gaming. Blame apple for not doing something about it not the makers.

Why don’t you guys work with Apple Development relations before claiming there are specific technical limitations. I am running D3 on 10.15.1 for all the beta cycle and I only encountered 1 issue with a revised graphic driver preventing popping full screen resolutions. So the only thing now that has really changed is APFS where the system volume is locked away from data volume and you just have to grant system full access to the game for the pointer to work.

well this sucks ;-\ should have known that it wouldn’t be available on macs

regarding " Blame apple for not doing something about it not the makers"
This is an industry where computer companies such as Sony, Apple, Microsoft partner with perspectives that want their software to work.
It’s not about the companies themselves that do third parties work.

I hope Blizzard is cool with eventually supporting this, but initially its might not be supported until the game is more matured and they have time to make it work.

Thanks for the feedback MissCheetah

I think this may be the reason, not enough sales to justify targeting another graphics API.

using a non-windows system does not make you a non-gamer. im on macos and linux all the time and i hate to say that the only reason i have to open a windows-pc is to play games. i think making a game for mac is not profitable as console or windows. thats why we left alone when it comes to games.

I don’t get why it’s important for non mac users to come into every single thread about mac gaming and post stupid irrelevant and uninformed remarks about macs and gaming.

It’s more or less the same hardware is in PCs. Just more expensive usually. You pay for the brand - and you pay a lot. That’s what we do and we get a design and a system we love.

The fact that Blizzard chooses not to support it anymore is a massive hit for mac gaming. Blizzard has put in a massive effort in the recent years developing metal which performs VERY well. I hope they’d reconsider but I highly doubt it. Guess there’s no D4 for me

I hope they don’t delay D4 by another year or two just to build a Mac client.

I tend to agree with others. It has everything to do with Apple’s graphics API - Metal.

It’s proprietary (of course) and OpenGL is being phased out by Apple.

Metal support was added to Heroes of the Storm, and then removed.

As opposed to Microsoft’s Direct X, which is … proprietary.
