I’m a really big fan of Blizzard games and I always thought that they’re games were supported on MAC as many of their other titles are. But Overwatch has been out for a while now and I’ve never had the chance to play it. Just wondering if there are plans for making it available for MAC in the future.
Unfortunately there have been no announced plans at this time to release the game on the native MacOS platform. Jeff Kaplan explains more in this video:
damn, but thank you anyway
It’s been four years. Overwatch is never coming to Mac. And if it did, most Mac gamers have moved on to games that aren’t ancient by gaming standards. Fortnite is available for Mac, for instance.
The reality is that a lot of hazy nonsense was pushed about Macs when Overwatch avoided the Macintosh platform. Innuendos of “capability” were bandied about. But the truth is that most bog-standard Macs have more than enough hardware to run Overwatch. Mid-range iMacs use Radeon 580s more than capable of running Overwatch at high settings and good framerates. High-end iMacs run Vega 48s with about the same horsepower as a 1660/Radeon 590.
iMac Pros use Radeon 56/Radeon 64. MacBook Pros push Vega 2 GPUs capable matching the performance of a Radeon 570. And you could always go external GPUs and then simply move to Radeon 7 if you really wanted to.
The truth is that the Mac market is small. Blizzard rightly wanted to focus on Windows and consoles. That’s perfectly ok. What’s not ok is the nonsense about hardware not being able to run Overwatch. Metal/Metal 2 API has similar performance to Vulkan and, at the time of initial release, Mantle. In other words, Macs have a great GPU/Compute API capable of producing great performance.
Blizzard doesn’t have lots of Metal programmers. I can surmise this because they use a pre-packaged engine for Hearthstone and they figured the Mac platform wasn’t worth the effort. Skipping Mac is ok. What’s not ok is pretending that Macs can’t run games properly or have weak hardware or software APIs, especially when they push the game four years later on a Switch, which is weaker pound for pound than an iPhone X. (iPhone X has the equivalent performance of a low-spec Core i5 and a Radeon 4850). So obviously Macs can run Overwatch beautifully…if Blizzard ever wanted to spend the money to make it happen.
But now, four years later? Who cares? The world belongs to Apex and Fortnite anyways.
