One thing I don’t want to see again is all builds using Enigma and the majority of melee using eth Botd. These are my suggestions. I think most of us can agree that Enigma and BotD are problematic runewords.
Enigma
Teleport removed or changed to another version that is less efficient. with a 2-3 second cooldown.
MF on enigma should be reduced from 1 per level to 0.50 per level.
Strength from 0.75 to 0.50 per level.
Grief
Should require 7 runes apparently.
BotD
Change damage from 350-400% to 300-400%
Attack speed from 60% to 0.5% per level.
Life Stolen per hit from 12-15% to 7-12%

Not gonna happen because in a brand new economy with no buffed drop rates and bots it will take ages just to get these runes.

by ages you mean like a 2 weeks? Because that’s how long it takes to make self-found enigma.

I strongly disagree and just because it won’t be there in the first week or two doesn’t mean it won’t happen soon after. Why wait?

I don’t see either of those runewords as being problematic. Teleport is still based on FCR, so there’s a trade-off if you want to hit high tele speed on most characters. It’s also low level tele so it consumes a fair bit of mana which is problematic on a melee char unless you’re using mana leech and constantly stopping to hit stuff along the way, or popping pots like crazy.
On my barb I only use enigma to bring my merc to me because his teleport speed with main weapons is atrocious otherwise. Also, Grief eats BotD for breakfast any day of the week in terms of raw damage, so I don’t really see the point of nerfing BotD when there’s already a much better weapon that can be had. Much higher life leech can be attained via other items, and there’s also life tap.
These seem like fairly arbitrary nerfs. I’m sure I could make an argument to nerf just about any runeword in the game one way or another if I went through them all. I don’t really see the point though, I have characters that use BotD and I honestly find it to be fairly underwhelming.
I don’t find any particular runeword to really be too OP at the end of the day. Especially when you compare melee damage that can be done by say a frenzy barbarian with BotD or Grief to the ridiculous amount of elemental area damage that a sorceress with infinity can put out. Or the high amount of elemental damage that can be added to each melee strike by a paladin or sorceress.
If you’re talking about OP, why not nerf titan’s and javazon skills so that javazons can’t one-hit baal? Why not make hammerdin’s hammers do elemental damage instead of pure magic so that they don’t bypass the vast majority of resists?
In any case, the developers have already said that they are not changing any of the items or game mechanics other than a handful of quality of life improvements and bug fixes for bugs that are unfair to the player in pvm, so nerfs like this aren’t going to happen.

Depends on community feedback, things can always change.

I don’t really want to see nerfs like that. It would change too much, especially in PvP. I would like to see them focus on improving skills and making more skills viable in hell.

These items do NOT need to be nerfed at all. For starters not every build uses them. A great many build favor Grief over BOTD and Fortitude or Chains of Honor over Enigma. Secondly, the idea of nerfing isn’t the best way to go about game balance, not that these items create an imbalance to begin with, again because not all builds use them or even consider them the best in slot items.
Also, while I hold the minority in this following opinion, I still hold that Last Wish is a better weapon for melee than Grief or eBOTD for PVM and the Ubers.

No way. If they start opening the door to “nerfing” anything, that compromises the whole project in my opinion.

Game is not even in ALPHA TEST, and somebody already asking for a nerf… what a time to live!

I mean… it isn’t like we’ve had over a decade to tell the impact they have on the game or anything.

Lol but GRIEF with only a LO rune is fine? XD

Why don’t you play diablo 3 if you like cooldown that much ?
Enigma is the reason why diablo II is still alive (especialy for pvp).

They are not going to make balance changes.
Also why would you nerf BotD?
Grief is the by far superior choice in nearly every case.

I am shocked to see these armchair game devs pop up in every other thread coming up with balance changes to an absolute classic game that has stood the test of time.
What a time to be alive.

I for one, have pre-ordered D2R and would definitely be disappointed to see that kind of nerfing in the released game. I also would rather never see a cooldown on spells if possible.
As stated previously, I think these items and skills are made to open more possibilities for each playable characters and there is almost always better items (rare quality especially) available than runewords.

We have had over a decade to tell the impact and the impact is that eBOTD simply isn’t the best melee weapon and Enigma isn’t the best in slot armor for every build.

When 1.10 runewords were announced people were excited but after a couple months Enigma in particular became an eyesore, particularly in PvP.
It was just about everyone with Enigma teleporting on top of each other. I lived through that era, if you enjoyed it, more power to ya, I disagree that it is good for the game and ever was.
Enigma has always been a controversial runeword and it is why quite a few mods nerf or outright remove it.
Suggestions are just that, it’s also just an opinion. I think Enigma is the biggest mistake to happen to Diablo 2.

I would disagree. Grief costs one tiny LO rune and kills all uniques by far.
Infinity wipes the floor with others alternatives.
Enigma might be a superb feature, but without dupes in the remaster you have to earn it. Grief on the other hand … xD
I’ll concede on eBotd, I also prefer Last Wish as you said above. I forgot all about Grief.
I won’t on Enigma simply because of the things it allows with the str, mf and a key Sorc skill.
