As title… if 8 people can have followers in Diablo 2, why can’t 4 people have them in Diablo 3?
Because they’re different games… if you haven’t noticed.
I’m all for allowing them into group games up to the 4 player limit.
It works a little like this now when you are the first in game and already in a rift, other players join your game and the follower will persist until you return in town and close.
They’ll have to sort out situations when a group game should not be entered by real players. Sometimes a 2 or 3 player group will prefer to keep a follower.
Right click the follower and choose an option ‘Occupy Group Slot’ or ‘Do Not Occupy Group Slot’.
When you choose Occupy, the follower’s avatar moves to the left column, underneath the players avatars. It becomes a teammate, which affects how much exp the group earns and the number of players that can join the game.
This is a good next step, plus some ways to gear your follower for dps.
Is the game too hard for you…?
Solo → Follower is allowed
Multi → No
It’s simple, right?
And how would the buffs be applied when all 4 players have, let’s say the Enchantress in the group?
Let’s really widen the gulf between solo and group players! Soloists deserve to be disadvantaged even more than they already are.

I’m mostly solo, so I agree with your sentiment. However, when my friends do play, doing regular rifts puts group play at a disadvantage. Between avarice band, death breath set, rift key set, and more on my follower, I’m actually much worse off doing regular rifts with a group.
The speed of running a GR in group outsets any loss of DB.
As for the topic, I’d expect solo players to be able to play with all 3 followers at the same time?
One of the key points of the follower rework was narrow down a tiny bit the gargantuan gap between solo and group play. Allowing followers in group play would completely kill that effort. This was discussed thoroughly in multiple threads when the rework was implemented. So obviously I’m against this suggestion.
Work Asheara’s set into your build if you want followers in group play.
Because this isn’t Diablo 2.
Followers in groups are not even needed.
Solo players are already at a huge disadvantage compared to groups.
If anything with followers happen, they should close the gap between solo and group play. Perhaps not all the way, but definitely a lot.
Allow soloplayers to have the same XP advantage as group players then aswell.
Different games and you guys already get enough advantages just by playing together it’s not needed.
They should let the solo players have all of the followers active all the time.
Next season theme perhaps?
The group players will complain just like they did with the follower revamp (season).
Three follower cheat deaths for solo HC players!
You would think that the solo “hardcore” players would jump all over that.
Start at level 70.
Start with a set of the player’s choice.
Purchase “loot bags” rather than individual (random) items.
Use followers in all modes.
Yep… that’d make D3 “better.”
