Imagine telling Leonardo Da Vinci to change the Mona Lisa

My favorite part of this analogy is he is asking for them to only change the art of the game and using a painting as an excuse not to change anything else.

Changing the art is like a new artist re imagining the Mona Lisa and you saying it’s fine if you repaint this but it has to stay the same size on the same type of canvas and with the same type of paint but have at it.

Is that 2nd painting a priceless work of art still?

This is a bad analogy to begin with. Art and digital game are not same. Lets say if u apply the logic to preserve the “piece” which are not relevance the current public, how much are you willing to pay for a copy of DR2 ? E.g. 1000 purist (art lover) x 40,000 USD per copy to get a 40mil revenue to feed vv team/blizzard ?

The reason old art are alive today is becus the rich ppl are able to keep it alive financially. Are the purist able to as well ? You willing to fork out 1000x the retail amount so that your D2 classic community can enjoy it in its purest form ?

You’re missing the point, which is that the the original painting IS a 518 year old painting. It is a piece of history before it is a painting. Diablo 2 as an arpg in electronical code is the same thing, a very notable piece of electronical gaming history.

It would be feasible to alter an art piece in its own time, before it becomes a piece of history. Same with a game, make as many changes as you want when it’s still just a game. But once things become a piece of history, just leave them as the piece of history that they are. That’s how you preserve history. That’s what makes things like the Mona Lisa special. If you start changing it around like any other modern piece of art or any other modern game, then it becomes no different and no longer special.

This is why understanding the difference between a remaster and a remake is very important to people, and they are getting pissed off with how many core mechanical changes are happening to D2r that are more along the lines of a remake than a remaster.

No one complains if a master artist touches up the Mona Lisa and makes it shine again, so long as it looks the same as it once did. But it would would be a tragedy if some dude painted over it and remade it in his own vision, like different pose, different expression on face, different clothes, because that wouldn’t be a remaster for shine, that would be a remake and no longer the Mona Lisa, no longer a piece of history.

We know that, that is the current state of OG, this remaster is supposed to fix that.

yeah that’s why you have diablo 2 lod non resurrected to play its the original piece of art d2 remastered is the repaint.

Art is also restored, but not painted again. If you paint it again it is fake. Aswell as if you remaster diablo 2 and change the game, it is a fake diablo 2.

Leonardi Da Vinci changed the Mona Lisa plenty of times, Da Vinci changed and corrected his paintings all the time, cause he was never satisfied with what he was painting and always thought he could do be better. Curiosity and this perfectionism was what pushed him to do what he was doing.

restoration doesn’t entail an entirely new coat of paint covering the whole thing

That’s kind of avoiding the point my good dude.

The game was commercialized to us as “The same Diablo 2 with new graphics, same engine underneath” and this is proving to have been a completely false advertisement at this point.

They told us this would be a remaster, and this is turning out to definitely be a remake.

People who want new stuff, including the company, need to focus on new games to do that, like the upcoming Diablo 4.

And you know what, if they want to do serious core mechanical changes, I could almost get behind that if they were GOOD changes that made the game BETTER. But that is not the case with D2r’s core mechanical changes. As it stands with the state the combat engine was in during the beta, the pvp is gonna botch completely in D2r.

Don’t paint over the Mona Lisa man. Leave it alone. It is the most valuable painting in the world for a reason. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.

In this case the paint is not what matters, as the graphis of d2 are nothing to be preserved, they are just random graphics from a game of that era. The art to be preserved is the gaming experience. We are not having a remaster of d2 because of its paint, but because its canvas.

Honestly people months ago were wondering why I was fighting so adamantly against any small change to itemization or skills…the issues with WW, WSM, WSG, etc. are exactly why.

I knew there would be a bunch of people who just want shiny new things, and I’m afraid these players will likely get their way, and when they have ruined Diablo2 by changing all these things, they will quickly leave for the next flavor of the month game, leaving the rest of us wondering what happened to our beloved game.

Please devs, do not allow this game to be developed by majority rule, or you’ll ruin everything that was once great about it.

not sure you know what a game engine is exactly but the engine is not everything underneath. Fortnite, Yoshi’s crafted world, and star wars: jedi fallen order all use unreal engine 4 doesn’t mean they are the same game.

they might interpret what makes diablo 2, diablo 2 differently than you, you have no control over that but the engine being used is the same one as d2lod is still running.

Cringe

Characterrerr

I thought Mr. Bean stole the Mona Lisa

I was not only you, i actually preordered the game because i was concearned about the opinions that were written on this forum and i wanted to give my opinion aswell.

Look at current D2RE. This People dont need focus on D4 ;). It totally easy: when you dont like changes, go play D2 original. All other guys (75%>) will play D2RE with good changes.

I hope we get more changes. The newest survey gives me hope.

Sure, but it’s not the same game as they commercialized, and as much will be obviously reflected in the pvp, if they don’t put WSG and some other key core mechanical features back into the game.

well they might as well change the game’s title to “Diablo 2 The Lord Of Refunds” if any more deviations from the original core game play are made.

Da Vinci won’t add a pair of sunglasses to the Mona Lisa!
But Blizzard can add two black bars on uw monitor!

Nintendo ones, wait long enough and they will just get more expensive
