I was playing in co-op mod with someone farming for the staff of herding components and every single one dropped for us at the same time except the gibbering gemstone. Since then I have killed Chiltara at least 500 times and still nothing I’ve gone to the not cow level six times farming for it and still nothing. I’m wondering if I am glitched?
After Izual dropped the plan for the staff, I figured I’d go for the components to make it even though it is basically worthless. I got the gem the first run to the Caverns - luckily, I had Kill Chiltara as a bounty.
The Black Mushroom was much worse. I had to run Cathedral around 40 times before the room spawned.
Has anyone noticed the extraordinarily high drop rate in the Caverns of Frost, I always leave with at least three legendries for such a small area and three is nearly always a goblin of some type in there, also one resplendent chest. Easy rewards and a very very safe and easy area to take on T16. I have no clue how many times I have killed ChilTara but its a lot an no gem.
I am one of those ‘found it by accident’ types.
Dropped early and easy for me. Still missing one other part but I can’t be bothered sadly.
No, but I almost never get the Caverns of Frost - Icefall seems far more common, probably 100:1 more so, if I bothered to verify (and not rely solely on statistically meaningless anecdotal prejudice.)
This is why the most powerful class in D3, every single season, is Mathematics class because, as we all know, the drop chance of the gemstone is 50% because either it drops or it doesn’t.

Hey! That’s MY jam!
It’s the most comforting thing to rely on.
Facts can be very uncomfortable.
I’ve heard, from a very reliable and trustworthy source, that if you read too many facts that contradict your feelings-based narrative, you should just drop off the forums for a couple of days (or up to a month) and then come back and act like nothing happened. Try it, you might like it.
I got Leoric’s Shinbone earlier in the week.
That’s also a crafting ingredient for the Staff of Herding, not a medical complaint.
I got every other component during vanila, going thru the story, exept that damned gemstone.
I ran into the staff recipe and decided to start farming for the components. All easy except the gibbering gemstone. I made about 20 runs before starting to compile data. Here what its gives (excluding the first 20 runs):
31 runs
17 Caverns of Frost
13 Chialaga
3 Bounty of CoF
13 Goblins
0 Gemstone
Then I came upon this page. I decided to change strategies and only go for bounties. Here’s what it gave:
34 games
2 bounty of Caverns of Frost
1 Chialaga
1 Goblin
1 Gemstone (!)
Based on my own experience (n=1), going for bounties worked better! Even though the bounties are rare, creating and leaving a game was faster then running the map searching for CoF. But CoF is rich in goblins and in champions…
Idk, seems from your data that caverns are there in half the games (17 out of 31), while about 1 in 10 games (5 out of 65) will give you the bounty. Question is if it’s faster to close and re-open a game 10 times to find the bounty, or search the area in two games. Closing and reopening a game and checking the map for the bounty maybe is 15-20 seconds or so, so you would need to search the area in less than 75-100 seconds (including reopening the game), and I think a fast build can search the area in well below 30 seconds.
So from your data I’d think that you get more caverns of frost per hour by just going to the area and look for it with a fast build.
You’re better off just not getting the staff unless you have, pretty literally, nothing else you can opportunity cost.
There is absolutely no reason why Gibbering Gemstone or the Caverns of Frost should be such a low drop chance/spawn rate, once a player has already spent countless hours farming for this item on another character, it should be a much higher spawn/drop rate from the 2nd time onwards. I understand that the 1st time a player does this it should be rare. But seriously, there is no point after a player has done this once on an account for them to grind this over and over on other characters on the same account. It’s this type grinding mechanic that drives players away and doesn’t keep people playing games like this. Especially when a player just wants to show friends this area and playing late in a season when it’s not possible to be competitive. Please fix this and create flexible spawn rate on these types of items and features for veteran players.
The drop rate for the gem is maddening and could use a small tweak. Every time you kill Chiltara the drop rate should increase by 0.1%. If it starts off at 5% then after 100 kills it will be a more bearable 15%, and it just keeps going up until the player receives the item. Some will get it sooner, some later. At the moment some players get it first go, and others farm for a month and receive nothing which feels arbitrarily punitive more than anything.
This is torture, not a game. Things like wings were for completing nine chapters, not some altar. Diablo 4 is coming out soon so you have wings for free fans and let others look for Chiltara if they want to have twice as many Primals.
Same with Cosmic Wings. A man plays for so many years, he killed an infinite number of gobs and no wings.
