Do they every really die?

Well it is interesting where they will take Lilith in D4. In a way you could see the fallout where some demons got sick of the Eternal War already as a form of corruption. No idea if Blizz writers want to take it there though or go further with that. Also in line with that even if she intends to bring back the prime evils to Sanctuary she will likely have her own plans connected to that and not just planning to serve them.

Also Angels might not be into converting, Humans certainly are and with their power unbound the corruption might not just be one sided or as unequal as in past. :stuck_out_tongue: Will the writers use that? Unlikely if they already plan a D5 that should play later, but maybe a hint.

Just as it could be interesting where the old Nephalim that are still around and are for a part Lilith’s children will stand or they will try to be neutral. Even what they will do with D3 hero that was as powerful as Uldysis, who with Zei on his/her side may well become aware of the options to live longer or will that hero just be gone? Those questions concerning the hero would likely have been answered in an expansion, but that never happened so D4 likely will have to give some answer.

Thank you for the reminder. I actually forgot about this image. I honestly don’t understand what is going on with this Andariel’s look. It seems like she was imprisoned. But we all know when she dies, she burns and leaves nothing. This is assuming she was forced back to Hell, you know, to rest before she can return. She is covered in Runes, I assume they are imprisonment enchantments, chains, and prison stocks. Glad she still has the poison and the hair.

Or maybe she practiced her BDSM in Hell and this is what we get?

I do actually prefer the nudity, not just for Andariel, but for the people of Sanctuary as well. I feel it is more accurate for the time. Burning at the stakes, people being sacrificed and being displayed on pikes, people ripped to shreds, captives in rags, etc.

Wasn’t there some lore tidbit about her being imprisoned (civil war?) in Hell after she resurrected? Or am I imagining things again :joy:

You are perhaps right. What you say would make sense, at least to match what is happening with the image. I don’t know the lore so deeply. If there is a place to read her complete lore with all the little details from reading stuff in the games, I’d like to give it a read.

I dont really know the lore either, but I thought they said something about her when they showed the image above in a D4 presentation.
Cant find anything through google however, so maybe not.

My theory is that after the events of D3 RoS, Andariel managed to revive earlier than the other great evils. However she was ambushed and had a sealed place upon her which involved carving the runes on her body, chaining her, and having fire constantly blasted around her, as fire is Andariel’s weakness and it’s presence likely both causes her immense pain and weakens her ability.

That said, when we see her in the rogue trailer, most of her restraints are gone, and the chains on her appear to be broken. So that leads me to believe that during the course of the game, we’ll likely either stumble upon Andariel and break her seal (for whatever reason), or some breaks her seal in an attempt to have her slow us down.

No arguments from me.

I believe that those are speculations. For example, there was one speculation video that Avalon had shared a while back that suggests that the heads that Andariel had chained to her are the heads of those who wronged her (like possibly the D2 heroes). That said if the above took place as you mentioned, I’d like to know more about it.

Ah, probably just confusing it with some of the speculation then.

Eternal conflicts are usually scheduled until the end of time AFAIK.

BButcher Demons are a sub class of Overlord demons.

If I remember right her imprisonment as far as civil war and the civil war itself were even long before the events of D1 and even led to them and the imprisonment of the three brothers (which we now know was a long ago laid out plan by the brothers with likely Mephisto as mastermind, making one wonder if the earlier creation of Sanctuary and Nephalim was part of their plan as well).

If Andariel was again imprisoned after events of D2 (beyond the black soulstone she was freed of by Malthael ofc in his final fight against our hero) those should be later events, unrelated to civil war in Hells at least.

As far as the Eternal War goes, as far as I am aware that is just a continuation of the fight between Tathamet the dragon and Anu, who destroyed each other with demons being parts of Tathamet and angels of Anu and both seem to be immortal and indestructible forces when comes to their energy.

Edit: One weird thing is a bit that Tthamet and Anu seemed to have been balanced perfectly, while the demons seem to outperform the Angels in power if we can believe Tyrael when he mentioned only the demon lords fighting amongst themselves kept the status quo between the two forces. Maybe Malthael always was imperfect or it has something to do with fact there were two pieces of Anu left after the fight, his eye The Worldstone and the Arch? I have no idea but could be interesting or absolutely nothing and if a thing what would the destruction of the Worldstone mean for that balance.

Yes, the Dark Exile, the civil war within hell in which the Lesser Evils (Azmodan, Belial, Andariel, and Duriel) waged war against the Prime Evils (Mephisto, Baal, and Diablo), had occured centuries before the start of Diablo 1. The war had ended with the Prime Evils being defeated and exiled into Sanctuary, which in turn caused the formation of the original Horadrim and their hunt for the three.

While the lesser evils (or in this case, Azmodan’s) goal was to have the prime evils exiled into Sanctuary in hopes that the High Heavens would focus their attention on them, and thus leave their gates defenseless against attacks; the lesser evils hadn’t realized that they in fact were playing into the hands of the Prime Evils who had wanted to be exiled into Sanctuary in the first place.

That said, the creation of Sanctuary wasn’t likely part of the Prime Evils plan, as they too seemed surprised about it, nor did they know where the worldstone had disappeared to. However unlike the lesser evils, the prime evils realized humanity’s potential and sought to utilize it rather than outright destroy it.

Thus far, Andariel, as well as the other lesser evils in fact, had only been imprisoned once, and that was during the events of D3, where they were sealed within the Black Soulstone. Which as you say was destroyed during the end of RoS, which after Malthael’s death caused the freedom of Diablo, which eventually caused the freedom of the other great evils as they had managed to separate themselves from Diablo. Now as to whether they’ll be imprisoned again during or before the events of Diablo 4, that’s unclear. However judging from Andariel’s D4 concept art, I believe that she at least was imprisoned after she revived, and this imprisonment lasted until we run into her in D4, in which she’ll be possibly freed and face us in battle.

Part of the reason for that is that Demons are simply far more numerous and varied in comparison to the angels. This gives them incredible advantage that allows them to adapt to many situations against angels. For example, Azmodan breeded the demonic hellflyers to better battle against angels who make use of their great flying capability.

I like your theory. I also didn’t know fire was her weakness. I commend the artist for this rendition.

I do hope Andariel gets a bigger role in the story.

I forget why Hell wants to take over Sanctuary. Is it for the Worldstone’s power or they just want to hang out on Sanctuary?

Not sure there ever has been a reason other than the nephalem can be used to help destroy the High Heavens.

I think you may be imagining that. I thought it was something along the lines of there is a reason for her different appearance. There may have been a throwaway reaponse from one of the side interviews that I can’t recall ATM though.

I agree, I do hope Andariel gets a bigger role as well. As for Hell’s intent regarding Sanctuary, they’re usually split into 2 groups. The first, wishes to corrupt Humanity and use their immense potential to turn the tide and annihilate Heaven (The Prime Evils fall under this group); while the 2nd group would rather see Humanity destroyed so the Eternal Conflict can continue without any third parties involved (Azmodan, and perhaps Belial fall under this group). Funnily enough, we hadn’t really learned how Andariel or Duriel actually feels about Humanity, besides that torturing humans with anguish or pain grants them untold pleasure.

I read some of the wiki, no idea if it’s accurate.

I would think she wants to kill humanity for revenge, at least for imprisoning her. She’s not cool with the other Evils cept for Duriel and mom. She wants to destroy Heaven and the Angels. But still not sure why they want to destroy Heaven. It would end the war, but then what? Take over Sanctuary and the Worldstone?

I think it would be also super awesome for Andariel to side with Sanctuary and Heaven. I suppose we can fight her, then shes like, “Ok, It bring me no pleasure to be defeated by the likes of you peasants. So I will join you to derive ecstasy from those who would want the War to continue.” Don’t know if that would be any good.
