Diablo 3 causes computer to freeze

Out of all the games I play Blizzard produced or not, Diablo 3 is the only one that causes my computer to completely freeze at random times. This could be during a run, character selection screen, or just standing in town. All drivers are up to date. I ran DDU to uninstall the drivers and then started a clean install. I uninstalled the game and reinstalled it into the same hard drive, then uninstalled and reinstalled on a different hard drive. None of these things corrected the issue. Again when the issue occurs the game and computer freezes completely but the sound from discord and people talking will continue for another minute or two. I have plenty of room one the hard drive. I have listed my specs below. X570 ASRock motherboard, AMD Ryzen 5 5600x with a CoolerMaster ML240L, 2-16gb corsair ram totaling 32gb, 500gb ssd for boot up, 1tb ssd for games 500gb and 2tb hdd for more room thats hasnt been used, Corsair RM750X power supply, AMD Radeon RX 6700XT 12gb…

Hi man,

Exact same problem here. 5700XT 3600x. so also full AMD.
I repoted it to blizzard, they say they cant do anything about it, saying i need to go to a pc repair guy.

I know this is bs. Internet is full of AMD users reporting freezes. Its something between AMD and diablo and they need to fix it. Send a bug report to AMD.

I have Intel/Nvidia/Realtek audio combo on my main PC, a backup PC and a laptop.

On all 3 PC’s the same happens with D3, unless I exchange the D3 audio file with another one (using the Hearthstone one). Of course in that case I have no ingame audio, but the game runs completely stable.

By meaning the same happens - I sometimes can play the game for hours but it then freezes on exit. Sometimes the game freezes on loading, or as mentioned above, just when playing. Win 10 64-bit, latest patches on all 3 systems.

I’m usually running a twitch stream on the side while playing D3 anyway, so I don’t need the ingame audio, but it is still something I would have expected them to have fixed.

Are you on windows 11 by any chance?

Edit: i just received a windows 11 update. Suddenly the freeze has changed from completely stand still to a amd error.

I have the same issue on my laptop. Sometimes I can play about an hour sometimes game freezes on login screen. I couldn’t fix it yet. It’s really annoying. I have gtx965 graphic card. I even played ac valhalla very smoothly. Can’t play diablo 3.
Windows 10 btw and 16gbs ram.

yup, its freezes sometimes, the way i solve this problem for me and my friends we turned off effects and reduced textures quality also we noticed some aoe spells like wizard Explosive blast and Meteor, crusader FOH or warrior Wwind when they are on extreme spammed on the same spot they force the game to freeze.

Also make sure both Fps are maxed out

Not sure what a PC repair guy would do at this point. It is weird because D2 or D2R do not freeze every… Just D3. I got kicked from a GR rift and 2 puzzles last night! luckily I rejoined one puzzle before it was done.

Yea… just some annoying standard reply. Also asking for documents i already shared.

My problem is that there is no crash logs or any errors popping up… Not sure what documents I would share or show… and I cannot recreate the problem consistently so now sure how to even give them good accurate information to solve the problem besides what I posted here… its random.

Yea. dxdiag and msinfo reports. But because its a freeze, i think there is nothing in it. And i needed to reset my comp every time.

Yep. but its weird because all my other components, fans, and lights will continue to run but my GPU fans will come to a stop after 30 seconds or so… Of course I cannot move my mouse and keyboard is not responsive but everything in the tower continues to operate. Almost like the GPU and its process freeze and nothing else. and maybe the keyboard and mouse work but the GPU isn’t processing them move on the screen…

Not sure this will help any of you, but I had this same issue a couple of months ago. I flashed my BIOS, updated my sound and video drivers, ran a diablo III repair, and have had zero issues since. I am not using AMD though.

After posting this my computer will likely explode…

I have fixed the problem. I have tried 3 things at the same time and havent freezed for almost 3 hours playing. I don’t know which one is worked so I will tell you every step I have tried in order and hope it will work for you.

I have downloaded fmodex64.dll and directly replaced with the one in diablo 3/x64 folder. I didn’t anything like .new or something. I just replaced with it. I cannot add the link but you can find in bnet forums.

  1. I restored in game setting from battle.net option before open the game.

  2. i choosed 32bit start from battle.new diablo 3 setting. So my game start 32bit.

And I just started the game and never freezed again.

Maybe some of them are irrelevant but this is what i did. Hope works for you as well

Did this and played for 5 hours over 2 nights… by hour 6th on the third day i froze again… Did not work.

Curious to know if other users experiencing this freezing issue are using Discord in-game overlay? Read that could be a problem… Disabled it, and we will see if it fixes.

(Additionally, disabled AMD in-game overlay and AMD hotkeys… just to be safe)

OK, you actually stopped playing the game on the 64-bit client, but are using the 32-bit client - that usually helped fixing the freezing issues.

Your fmodex64.dll is for the 64 bit version of the client. But even though you replaced it, the game upon exit will redownload the D3 one (very short download, so you might not even notice)

Had the same issue after the AMD Adrenalin August update which coincided with a recent update to Win 11.
Running a full AMD system with a 6800.
Did a full reinstall but no joy, freezing continued.
Rolled back to driver 22.1.6.
Have not had an issue since.
Tried a few recent drivers but freezing returned, so still on 22.1.6
Annoying that you cant update the driver but D3 is one of the few games I play a lot so its no more updates for me till it some how gets fixed. But being an old game with D4 on the horizon I doubt very much this will happen…

i have the same problem.
i have bought a new amd card had a 1080 but havent played in the last 2 years or so. so i cant say that this also happens on my old card.
i cant try the 22.1.6 driver you mentioned because this version is not compatible with my card…
i have the 7900 xt currently with the 22.12.2 and the only versions are the 22.12.1 the 22.12.2 and the new 23.1.1
i hope the new one will work…

edit:
still happening with the 23.1.1 driver.
will try the 22.12.1 next but i doubt that it makes a difference to the 22.12.2
edit 2:
still happening with the 22.12.1 driver
its weird that sometimes the freeze happens after some hours of playing and sometimes after under 10 mins when im am standing in town doing chest/invetory management…

i have the same problem.
i have a 7900 xt and D3 is the only game that has this problem.
i have tested all 3 available drivers(22.12.1 + 22.12.2 + 23.1.1)
the problem is still there.

now after loging in again i saw that my character died and is now gone…
looks like i will never play d3 again…
to all with the same problem good luck solving it.

Do you mean perhaps 22.6.1?

I cant even find 22.1.6. first google result replaces 22.1.6 with 22.6.1

Or do you perhaps have a link to 22.1.6?
