From what I understand this is a purely optional event, you never need to do it if you do not want to. But this is my question: When the shards are being purified if you are a level 10, and a group of 10-20 level 40 players go hostel on you how in the world can you defend yourself from that type of attack? Also will the higher level players just be camping out near the field all the time so they can basically steal all of the shards from the lower level players?
If I understand this correctly you do not need to participate in the PvP part of the zone to get the shards. You can get them from killing monsters in the zone. But as soon as the shards are being purified look out because the vultures will be coming in for a meal and you are on the menu.
Not true. Purely optional means no rewards at all, while you have cosmetics here.
There will be level/power scaling in PvP so on theory the player always will have a chance 1 vs 1, but 1 vs a group would be a different scenario, pretty much unwinnable for the solo player as long as there aren’t rules locking the PvP battle between two characters only.
Yes, many players that have finished their characters will do this to annoy others and since the fields will be at static locations they will annoy many for sure.
Once purified they can’t be taken away from you.
Get friends. Open world PvP has never been, nor, as far as I have ever known it to be in any game, fair. That is the risk of participating at low level in every game ever. You want fair, you need arenas or some sort of instanced PvP where you know you can’t be ganked or ganged up on.
Several gaming sites and fansites were invited to a private Zoom call with two Diablo 4 developers to discuss details of the new Rogue class. Below you can read through some of the non-verbatim highlights of the Q&A.

PvP
Open world PvP zones in Diablo IV are known as Fields of Hatred, and they are marked on the map.
In addition to other players, you will find these in PvP Zones: monster events, treasure chests, rare elites and more.
The land has been infected by Lilith’s evil. Thus, players will loot “Shards of Hatred” from enemies you kill, from completed event rewards, and from treasure chests. Shard of Hatred can be used as a PvP currency. You bring those to purification ritual areas throughout the Fields of Hatred to spend elsewhere.
You can participate in events with other players in the Fields of Hatred (PvP zone) or decide to be hostile to each other.
When a player dies in the Fields of Hatred, all the unpurified Shards of Hatred carried will drop to the ground as loot.
You can complete events in the Fields of Hatred without participating in PvP.
When you toggle to become Hostile, other Hostile players will be able to see you as Hostile and viceversa.
Hostile groups can gang up on other hostile players without attacking members of their group.
PvP in Diablo 4 isn’t designed to be fair. A player might be half health while engaging a rare elite, and suddenly be attacked by another hostile player or by a gang of hostile players.
It was hinted that sometimes you might be able to overcome other players in specific environmental situations that might or not be there next time you visit the Fields of Hatred zone; and you might feel at a disadvantage in other environmental situations.
You can loot ears from players like you did in Diablo II, but you can’t sell them in Diablo 4. These are meant as a trophy collection, and they list the name of the PvP player you defeated.
There is no team-based match PvP in Diablo 4 at the moment or plans for it. Only Open World PvP in Fields of Hatred zones. You can join groups of players, but there is no team vs team matches.
If you decide to flag for PvP inside the Fields of Hatred, then decide to unflag, you can only toggle PvP off at the Fields of Hatred town.
PvP currency (Shards of Hatred) will play no role in progression. You can only purchase cosmetic items and trophy-style rewards. That means you won’t find better gear in PvP than what you get from PvE experiences.
There is no way for a hostile PvP player to force a PvE player into combat in the Fields of Hatred, or viceversa; or to accidentally cast a ranged AOE at the exact time a PvP player pops into view in the affected area.
Rogue traps: They are difficult to spot in grass and foliage. Traps will eventually fade out after a period of time. Enemies might trigger them far from your Rogue.
This right here is very good to hear. While I’m glad pvp is making a better comeback in Diablo 4 than it did in Diablo 3’s brawl (or at least I hope it does), I’m also glad to hear that pvers won’t have to worry about pvpers interrupting and/or ruining their game experience, that is assuming that they don’t want the cosmetics.
Yes, there is no fair play in those zones and you will very likely have a hard time turning in the shards on lowbies or during solo play. It’s the law of the jungle (while turning in) and not instanced pvp with rules.
No reason for a pvp hater to ever turn in those shards if it’s that bothersome. Unless ofc he/she feels entitled to all the cosmetic rewards?
No, no it doesn’t. Optional means it’s not required for completion or to progress. You can gain the same power elsewhere. If your goal is to collect everything in the game, sure, in that context it’s not optional. But then that makes everything non-optional in every game ever. Why are you trying to make it seem like we shouldn’t receive items for anything outside of what you like to do?
As a PvP hater I agree. This is actually looking like a very good system. I can totally opt out, or if I really like a tmog item, I can suck it up, and put on my game face.
It can be a solo experience but it sounds too testing to go solo, especially at first. I would recommend going to such places in a group. Not only do you stand more of a chance of survival but you will probably have a better experience overall.
PvP in Diablo 4 would be completely optional if you can get the cosmetic rewards elsewhere in the PvE part of the game.
Locking/gating rewards in games behind specific events is bad practice and even worse when it goes against the philosophy of the mode (PvE in this case).
For example, making purifying available in PvE, but to a lot lesser extend (the player brings 100 red shards and they turn to 10 purified) would be an option that would still make PvP 10 times more efficient than PvE in this case, but it won’t make it forced for those wanting the cosmetic.
I was always supporting maximum freedom regarding player’s choice. If someone doesn’t want to experience PvP in a PvE server he has to have that freedom, just as the opposite - if there is a PvP server the most skilled players should be able to only “feed” from the others without ever engaging in the PvE content.
Seems most of the Ppl are still afraid, that they can become a target …
But rly ?
I mean. You just run around the Shrine, looking if no one is nearby and then you start your Channel for what ? 2-4 Seconds ?
Its not as if it would take 5 Minutes …
Cool would be, that it just purify while channeling a fix amount.
Said ~25-50 Shards per Second.
With this, the Risk would go up, the more Shards you have on you.
But as we know Blizz…
Prob. it will just be a 2-3 Second Channel. No Matter if you have only 5 or 500 Shards on you.
