Iām afraid in Diablo world there are WAAAY too many abbreviations to list them all. If you have some that you need to understand, please list them and weāll explain the meaning.
Iāve always hated abbreviations, acronyms, and initializationsā¦chatspeak of any kind, really. But, thatās the way gaming has gone, so we all have to put up with it. At least it seems some kind soul has gone and gathered a list together. Thanks for posting that up, Nefertiri.
Youāre welcome, but thank Maskraider, he wrote it.
The original author was @Hulktopus. I just ported it from the old forum with some updates. See the History section for details.
We can still view the old forum? My old links now just lead to the current one. Can you please elaborate how you accomplished this? Thanks.
No, the old forums are gone now.
We had warning before the forum change over while we could still go into the edit and quote functions. That let people save the contents. The forums were also archived in read only mode for months after the switch.
That also let people go back and find anything else they wanted to recreate and migrate.
Use the search function. Typed in the word āacronymsā and voila.
I found out, not that long ago, that most of them must be written in caps:
Like IMO, AFAIK, LMAO, LOL, NP, BRB,ā¦
What about this oneā¦
YYUR YYUB ICUR YY4ME
googled it and had a giggle
Me too, canāt stand it. But I am not talking about gaming terms like CC, crit, HP and so on.
I despise the regular ones, like AFAIK, IIRC and the unholy horror of the laughing abbreviations. Just say haha you pleb. I donāt get why we as gamers who tend to be able to type pretty damn quickly have a problem with saying āas far as I knowā instead of AFAIK. We donāt use phones with character limited text messages anymore.
To each their own, but Iām unbothered by it. Like a lot of things, initialisms snuck their way into how we speak and like it or no, theyāll probably stick around for quite some time. Kind of similar to how we use contractions, like the ācanātā in your ācanāt stand it.ā Once upon a time it was seen as a kind of high crime against the English language, now you can find them in the headlines of major newspapers. Fun stuff.
AFAIK = 5 characters
As far as I know = 16 characters
Typing the abbreviation takes under a third of the time as typing it out.
AS = 2 characters
Attack Speed = 12 characters
Typing the abbreviation takes a sixth of the time as typing it out.
CHD = 3 characters
Critical Hit Damage = 19 characters
Typing the abbreviation takes under a sixth of the time as typing it out.
Regardless of your typing speed, the reason the abbreviations are used is because theyāre massively quicker than typing out what the abbreviations stand for. Now try that if youāre giving advice of what to re-roll on an itemā¦
Reroll AS into CHD = 18 characters
Reroll Attack Speed into Critical Hit Damage = 45 characters
The advice with abbreviations is 60% faster than typing stuff out.
Because we all know weāre just jotting down a quick wall of letter salad before we defuse that bomb on the desk that has two seconds left on the timer.
Just a weird thought that popped into my head.
Actually, depending on circumstances, itās usually faster if I donāt use acronyms. I might be the extreme minority on that.
Of course, my feeling is just that if you type quickly then 16 characters take like no time at all so just type the words.
Just allow me to be an old man with this and shout at the kids with their newfangled lazy words on my lawn.
While I agree the use of so many shortcuts are a barrier to communication itās not a new thing. Especially in technical fields and militaries. SPQR
Jargon can actually make things easier to read. Reading a paragraph in a discussion of Critical Hit Chance is easier when using CHC and everyone understands the term than spelling it out fifty times and people keep losing their place because theyāre mentally just skipping the last two words.
