Currently at the point I need certain runewords to be able to progress through the game such as Chains of Honor, Fortitude and Call to Arms and I need an Um, Ber, Ohm and Lo and I think that’s it, everything else I have included the bases.
As you might not be surprised but I’m finding it very difficult to find any of those runes, seem to be finding a lot of amns and thuls in my farming routes but not those sweet higher ones.
Where’s your favorite area to try to get high runes and where have you actually found them?
I think it mostly makes sense to farm where there is just a crap ton of monsters you can kill fast, safely and reliably like Hell cows.

A hell bovine has a 1 in 730,549 chance of dropping a Ber
Mephisto is the highest boss chance at 1:54,020
The thing is though that’s only 13.5236~ cows to equal the best boss drop chance of a Ber. It’s boring and getting the leg each time irritating but it’s probably the most efficient.

A simple formula is
N = number of kills required
X = Target percent chance after N kills you’re targeting (bear with me)
Y = Percent chance of the drop not happening (ie if a drop has 1:1000 chance this would be 999/1000)
N = ln(1 - X) / ln(Y)
So if we say X is 0.5 we’re saying “How many kills of a monster do I need for a 50% chance of getting a drop”
Using this formula with the cows we get
N = ln(0.5) / (730548 / 730549)
= ~506,337 cows for a 50% chance to drop a ber
then doing the same for Mephisto it will be ~37,443 Mephisto kills for a 50% chance to drop a ber.
Lower Kurast is supposedly the best. And while I have found a ton of crafting mats there I haven’t found any high or even medium runes Also it’s boring as heck…
I even somehow spawned the perfect map for it on 1st playthrough with all 6 chests right next to the waypoint. So now I’m not getting any runes and I can’t change difficulties to get my socket / respec quests because I don’t want to lose the map haha
I’d like to do hell cows but I haven’t defeated Baal yet in hell hence why i’m asking about rune areas to make runewords that will let me do hell cows lol
I farm Chaos Sanctuary for experience, runes and Diablo loot since Chaos Sanctuary is a high level area. I have found 1 Lo, 2 Ber and Ohm at Chaos Sanctuary and a couple of mid runes. I occasionally run Mephisto and kill the Council because I found another Lo rune and Ist there but Mephisto is not high enough level so he is not my primary farm any longer.
Negative. Your method dictates that killing 730,549 cows guarantees you a Ber, which is untrue.
Rather, express it as a 730,548:730,549 chance of not happening. Multiply by 14. That’s your chance of it not happening, and you can extrapolate from there the chance of it actually happen.
That’s 10,227,672:10,227,686 of not happening. 0.9999986312 of not happening, or 0.0000013288 of happening.
Meph is 1:54:020 or 0.0000185116.
0.0000185116 / 0.0000013288 =14 (pure coincidence). Meph is 14 times more likely to drop a Ber than 14 cows.
Yeah, except that’s not how it works. 14 individual attempts to make something happen with a 1/730,549 chance is not in any way the same as a 14 / 730,549 chance.
Your math would be like rolling a 730,549-sided die, and 14 of the outcomes of that dice roll are desireable. But what it really is, is you’re trying 14 times but only one of the outcomes is desireable. These are not in any way the same thing.
Any area with high monster density and easily killable mobs. Cows is probably the best in that regard. Chaos is ok in mob density but also gives better exp and items, but monsters are harder to kill for some builds. The ghost type monsters in chaos have a higher chance to drop a rune but not by a massive amount.
That does not mean that Mephisto even will drop a Ber rune. Each run are separate, the drop chance does not increase with every kill. Every cow can drop a Ber rune, as can Mephisto even though he has a higher chance. 0.0000185116 is 0.0000185116 for every run, it never gets any higher. I have found 1 Lo, 2 Ber and Ohm at Chaos Sanctuary minions and Mephisto or Diablo has never dropped any rune worth mentioning. Even Cow level have dropped higher runes for me than Mephisto himself.
Also it’s boring as heck…
