Season 6 - Improve Crafting & Add New Recipes

The intent of crafting is to provide another opportunity for characters to get access to rare-equivalent items to help with the leveling process. Unfortunately, most crafted items are garbage and do not fulfill that role. I urge the developers to revamp crafting as follows:

Crafting Themes

As there are seven types of gems (Amethyst, Diamond, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, Topaz, and Skull) and only four crafting themes (Blood, Hitpower, Caster, and Safety), the developers could add three new themes (Fighter, Fortune, and Occult) while performing a balance pass on the available pre-set mods for crafted gear:

Theme Gem Weapon Restrictions Available Pre-Set Mods
Blood Ruby Bladed Weapon & Claw Life, Enhanced Damage, Increased Attack Speed, Open Wounds, -Enemy Physical Resist, -Target Defense, Life Steal, Life Per Kill, Life Regeneration, Replenish Life, Fire Resist, Life Tap Charges, Sacrifice Charges
Hitpower Sapphire Blunt Weapon, Spear & Polearm Strength, Enhanced Damage, Increased Attack Speed, Crushing Blow, Attack Rating, Slows Target, Freezes Target, Prevent Monster Heal, CtC Amplify Damage On Striking, Cold Resist, Grim Ward Charges
Caster Amethyst Staff, Wand, Club & Sorceress Orb Energy, +All Skills, Mana Per Kill, Mana Regeneration, Increase Max Mana, Damage Taken Goes to Mana, Faster Cast, Lightning Resist, Lower Resist Charges
Safety Emerald Bow & Crossbow Dexterity, Enhanced Damage, Piercing Attack, Hit Blinds Target, Knockback, Damage Reduction, Faster Hit Recovery, CtC Frozen Armor When Struck, Cannot Be Frozen, All Resist, Slow Missile Charges
Fighter Diamond Bladed & Throwing Weapon Vitality, Enhanced Damage, Increased Attack Speed, Deadly Strike, Ignore Target Defense, Faster Run/Walk, Piercing Attack, Replenish Quantity, Stamina, Poison Damage, Poison Resist, Burst of Speed Charges
Fortune Topaz Dagger Light Radius, Enhanced Damage, Attack Rating, Extra Gold From Monsters, Better Chance Of Getting Magic Items, Reduce All Vendor Prices, Find Item Charges
Occult Skull Wand Mana, Mana Per Kill, Magic Damage Reduced, Magic Resist, Charges: Teleport, Energy Shield, Enchant, Revive, Terror, Attract, Inner Sight, Spirit of Barbs

Notes:

  1. Bladed Weapon = Axe, Dagger & Sword
  2. Blunt Weapon = Mace, Hammer, Club & Scepter
  3. Item restrictions for crafted armor and shields remains unchanged
  4. Ethereal bases used for crafted items will now retain the ethereal property.

New Socketing Recipes

The developers should consider adding a few recipes that allows the player to add sockets to non-socketed items, such as: unique, rare, and magic items as follows:

Unique Ring + Lem Rune + Perfect Skull + Unique Item = Unique Item (1 socket)
Rare Ring + Hel Rune + Flawless Skull + Rare Item = Rare Item (1-2 sockets)
Magic Ring + Eth Rune + Normal Skull + Magic Item = Magic Item (1-3 sockets)

New Dye Recipes

The developers should add new dye recipes for coloring your armor/weapons for added customization (no change to item graphic):

Dark Colors
2 Ruby + 1 Skull + Armor/Weapon = Armor/Weapon (Dark Red)
2 Emerald + 1 Skull + Armor/Weapon = Armor/Weapon (Dark Green)
2 Sapphire + 1 Skull + Armor/Weapon = Armor/Weapon (Dark Blue)
2 Amethyst + 1 Skull + Armor/Weapon = Armor/Weapon (Dark Purple)
2 Topaz + 1 Skull + Armor/Weapon = Armor/Weapon (Dark Gold)
1 Topaz + 2 Skull + Armor/Weapon = Armor/Weapon (Dark Yellow)
1 Diamond + 2 Skull + Armor/Weapon = Armor/Weapon (Dark Grey)
Light Colors
2 Ruby + 1 Diamond + Armor/Weapon = Armor/Weapon (Light Red)
2 Emerald + 1 Diamond + Armor/Weapon = Armor/Weapon (Light Green)
2 Sapphire + 1 Diamond + Armor/Weapon = Armor/Weapon (Light Blue)
2 Amethyst + 1 Diamond + Armor/Weapon = Armor/Weapon (Light Purple)
2 Topaz + 1 Diamond + Armor/Weapon = Armor/Weapon (Light Gold)
1 Topaz + 2 Diamond + Armor/Weapon = Armor/Weapon (Light Yellow)
2 Diamond + 1 Skull + Armor/Weapon = Armor/Weapon (Light Grey)
Other Colors
3 Emerald + Armor/Weapon = Armor/Weapon (Crystal Green)
3 Sapphire + Armor/Weapon = Armor/Weapon (Crystal Blue)
3 Diamond + Armor/Weapon = Armor/Weapon (White)
3 Skull + Armor/Weapon = Armor/Weapon (Black)
1 Ruby + 1 Topaz + 1 Diamond + Armor/Weapon = Armor/Weapon (Orange)

New Quiver Recipes

The developers should added new recipes utilizing the Zod Rune for creating unique quivers for infinite quantity of arrows and bolts as follows:

Quiver of Arrows + Zod Rune = Quiver of Endless Arrows (infinite qty)
Quiver of Bolts + Zod Rune = Quiver of Endless Bolts (infinite qty)

New Gem Break Recipe

The developers should add a new recipe to break down higher quality gems into lower quality gems using a hammer of any kind as shown below. This recipe would have some loss built into it acquiring only 1-2 gems of lower quality. This recipe would be useful in a pinch, but inefficient enough that players would consider other options:

Hammer (any kind) + 1 Gem (other than chipped) = 1-2 Gems (of lower quality)

Upgrading Crafted Items

Another aspect that limits use of crafted items during playthrough is the inability to upgrade the items to their exceptional and elite variants. The development team should consider adding the ability to upgrade crafted items by utilizing the recipes shown below:

Ral Rune + Sol Rune + Perfect Emerald + Normal Crafted Weapon = Exceptional Version of Crafted Weapon
Tal Rune + Shael Rune + Perfect Diamond + Normal Crafted Armor = Exceptional Version of Crafted Armor
Lum Rune + Pul Rune + Perfect Emerald + Exceptional Crafted Weapon = Elite Version of Crafted Weapon
Ko Rune + Lem Rune + Perfect Diamond + Exceptional Crafted Armor = Elite Version of Crafted Armor

Re-rolling Rare Items

The developers should change the recipe for re-rolling rare items from 6 P. Skulls to 3 P. Skulls. This change would allow more frequent rolls and allow re-rolling 4x2 rare items (e.g. War Pike, Grand Matron Bow, etc).

3 Perfect Skulls + Rare Item = Rare Item (of the same type)

Horadric Cube Size

Developers should change size of Horadric Cube to be 4x4 (up from 4x3), and can contain up to 16 slots worth of items while taking up 4 slots itself. After all, a cube is symmetrical.

Display Item Level

Developers should add option to show iLvl on items and enabled via a toggle in the Options Menu, which makes crafting more convenient as well as re-rolling items for certain affixes.

After all, a cube is symmetrical.

20 some years and I never questioned this…

Not to brag, but that was my first thought the first time I opened the cube. “This isn’t a cube!”

I like a lot of these ideas, especially the “reverse unsocket” recipe and relaxed item restrictions for crafting.

Hopefully this won’t derail things, but in addition to everything else, I’d like to see a new group of Craft Items called ‘Mobility’ items. All of these items would have +1 Teleport as the primary auto-mod. The recipe would follow the same structure as existing recipes and would use Topazes, which are currently unused for anything.

Since Tele is such a good primary mod, these don’t necessarily need a random secondary mod, but to keep symmetry with other crafts, possible secondary mods could include FRW, FHR, FCR, IAS, Faster Block, Half Freeze Duration, Slow Target, etc.

A little list of secondary mods I cooked up:

  • Weapon: Slows Target (5-10%)
  • Body Armor: Half Freeze Duration
  • Head: Reduced Curse Duration (5-10%)
  • Hands: Increased Attack Speed (5-10%)
  • Feet: Faster Run/Walk (5-10%)
  • Waist: Faster Hit Recovery (10-20%)
  • Shield: Faster Block Rate (5-10%)
  • Amulet: 5% CtC Lvl4 Slow Missiles
  • Ring: Faster Cast Rate (5-10%)

That would make Siege of Harrogath quest reward obsolete.

Both your recipes and the quest reward could be tweaked to match the Mechanic’s/Jeweler’s/Artisan’s prefixes (and their availability based on item rarity - up to 2 sockets on rares, up to 4 on magic).

Please also add a recipe for set items (can be the same as for uniques). And maybe one for crafted?

There are more item colors available, please consider including them as well. Full list:

Code Transform Color
whit White
lgry Light Grey
dgry Dark Grey
blac Black
lblu Light Blue
dblu Dark Blue
cblu Crystal Blue
lred Light Red
dred Dark Red
cred Crystal Red
lgrn Light Green

Brilliant!
Can we get 4 tabs of 4×4? After all, a cube is 3D.

Crafting items: consider adding additional recipes (other than Blood/Caster/Hitpower/Safety). PD2 added 2 additional categories.

Agreed. To include all the colors for the New Dye Recipes, they could use the diamond for light colors and skull for dark colors as follows…

Yes, I would love to see new crafting themes.

That would be awesome. More QoL and less demanding a socket quest. But with the rares it will really break the game a little bit. Like you can fit in 1 more mod and if it rolls 2os then somebody could end up with a brokenly good rare circ that was not previously possible. But still chances are chances.

Agreed. This would offer a nice alternative to Larzuk quest.
