Removing stamina, the more you think about it the better it gets

So I read an interview with the developers in which they say they were considering removing stamina but there is stuff related to it in game.

To which I have to say: Yes, that’s right remove all of it.

  • The stamina potions will not be needed.
  • The properties on items, nobody wants them, they are always bad rolls no matter your class or build.
  • The increased stamina drain in heavier armors, not needed, slower movement speed is penalty enough.
  • Rework the “increase stamina” skill. Nobody uses it but as a prerequisite. Make it so the running defense and block penalty is reduced per skill level, it can synergize with berserk reducing its defense penalty too.

I think that is all.
So yes, of course, removing stamina is not just removing the stamina bar, it requires other small changes, all of which will improve Diablo 2. Just wins all across the board, where is the dilemma.

The other way around

Give a purpose to stamina

Make stamina a physical attack bonus

Got 1200/1400 stamina… get a 120% damage buff

But then new players would just use run all of the time and never have the chance to see that they get hit less when their stamina runs out and they are forced to walk.

I’d buy the “giving a purpose to stamina” approach too.

Kind of though to balance because at highter levels characters are always over 90%. Maybe attacking also drains stamina and if you dont have enough you dont get the bonus.
But whatever, giving a good use for stamina does the trick too.

Which interview was this?

Yep that’s a part of my old suggestion I forgot to add

guess the block debuff when running will also have to be removed.

I notice when playing with a controller, I tend to not run out of stamina due to how you can control the speed of your stride with the analog stick not using any pathfinding.

would be a good way to balance controller VS mouse i guess.

never had an issue with it stamina myself.
was just glad we could run compared to d1

No more stamina potions

Stamina just seems like a non issue to me. A little annoying at early levels but there are potions to resolve that. After vitality is increased you forget all about it.

At this point I question how many hours the dev team will be putting into making D2R better so I want them all to be well spent (balancing, new content, loot filter etc). Yeah stamina is pointless but it’s pretty far down on the list of things I want to see happen with D2R.

Bah. This would just be one more thing that chips away at the original core gameplay.

But i like stamina. It was unique to d2. I think stamina absorb shouöd be more mean draining it fast to 0 in hell to give mosquitos a meaning

you know, if they remove enough stuff, we’re going to end up with just an empty scene with a white cube in the center lol ^.^

hey at least it will be far easier to amend the logic ^.^

OnPlayerLoad = WinGame {}

Well at least the OG is still up and running. I’ll fire up Sven’s glide wrapper again if things get too out of whack in D2:R. Or go through another retro games kick… Been wanting to try my hand again playing the old arcade game Tempest. Now THAT’S a hard game! lol

im currently re-building diablo with unity engine myself. LoL

Just started yesterday and have already implemented navigation, camera control, foe AI template and Loot tables. Luckily all the game assets are uploaded onto random sites ^.^
Just added the 3d sound this morning. love all the footstep sounds. ^.^
Everything still looks like a cube or sphere still LoL
Sphere(1) : Moooo Moo Moo moo Lol

going to see how long it takes to complete a re-make simply by observing the game and no copy paste within unity. ^.^

Still have those other responsibilities in that other game…on top of irl and stuff.
But you know… covid makes it easy to give the excuse of staying indoors haha

Stamina’s problem is how easy to ignore it is.

That’s the reason ANY investment in it, is so wasteful. Because you don’t NEED to put any work into it, to keep it in good shape.
You just won’t run out of Stamina, once you hit a half-decent lvl and stats. Not with portals and waypoints there as shortcuts. Not when, even if you spend most of a fight running around, the little stops will replenish it just fine.

I recently had to run through most of both NM Great Marsh and Flayer Jungle in one go. Didn’t clear them out quite right, so I had to quickly trace back my steps. Didn’t find anything worth stopping for, so no chance for Stamina to replenish on its own either. My Zealot is lvl 61, Ancient Armor, run always on. I never paid ANY attention to Stamina’s improvement. Barely have any bonuses, by accident of course. Didn’t come even close to depleting it. Useless.

The game has a lot of significant stats and effects. How you balance those out, how much you play “by the book” (as in, following the typical strategies) and how much you don’t… Imprints your personality into the build. And there’s enough room for both. That’s fun.

For example, and I know this is pretty “by the book,” I keep rejecting items that are technically more potent than those that give me higher run speed. Because I just love that +50% that I’ve had in my Zealot for the last several levels. It works nicely into how I handle a lot of situations by just running around. Outmaneuvering monsters and their missiles or even melee attacks. Even when I often don’t even need to. Because my Zealot only very rarely suffers a hit that makes him lose more than 30% hp. And even when diving right in and staying in the thick of it, is actually the optimal deal for such a build.

My idea, to make it useful: More inventory room.

I honestly believe a huge QoL and interesting addition, would be for some stat or calculation to be able to increase your inventory space. You know, the “backpack” where loot and Charm go.

On that, since Str is not exploited enough by the system and Stamina much less so even… Maybe those could add squares to your inventory? As in, you’re not strong/sturdy enough to carry more loot? Even if this means up’ing both stats becomes tougher, to keep things balanced out.

I don’t know if the OP is referring to the current devs or not, but I know David Brevik has said if he could go back and change something about Diablo 2, he would remove stamina from the game: https://youtu.be/t5lWxo3rjvM?t=1366

“It punishes the new player, that’s all it does. Right? So… it was a bad idea. […] When you’re designing something it may seem like oh, this is too good so we got to balance it, we need to make some sort of drawback to… running around all the time. And then, you know, you make something like the stamina bar. Because it’s just too fun to be running around all the time. We wouldn’t want you to have fun! … What the hell was I thinking?”

Or Stamina could have the opposite effect of what running does to your defense stats.

Its such a huge aspect of the core gameplay that a third of the player base probably doesn’t even know its a mechanic. gasp

Yeah, well how many legs do you need to pull off a millipede before it becomes a centipede? Or would it just be a millipalegic millipede?

Depends, how much stamina does it get from each leg.

I’m partially against this, since Vitality is already the go to stat dump during leveling. No need to buff it further. You’d have to change the main stat that grants Stamina to something like Strength first.

They should just increase stamina drain so it’s actually a thing. Make this game harder not easier please.
