I haven’t really been a online gamer, I usually play single player games, or at least the single player “feature” of a RPG or ARPG. That said, I have recently been encouraged to try out Diablo II: Resurrected in the multiplayer format, seeing as how there are seemingly many benefits to it. I would like to be able to trade/sell/buy items from other players,. What perks/features are there for playing multiplayer, aside from being able to trade/buy/sell items and gear? Can I make an online character but still play Diablo II: Resurrected on my own? And I am pretty sure I can’t carry over my current single player character to multiplayer, but I figured I would bring that up in this thread. Any help and/or advice is appreciated!! Thanks so much, everyone!!
Unfortunately there is 0 challenge to multiplayer. If you have no family/friends to play with SSF is 1000x better because p8 allows it to actually be fun/challenging.
If/when they allow p8 in nonladder it will be worth playing and the mode to be in! Ask for it everywhere you can.
Otherwise SSF id better option. If you have family friends play league or other steam games. All of mine quit until D2R is harder. P1 monsters are a joke.
Multiplayer is pretty much for pvp and ranks on ladder.
You can still play multiplayer on your own.
You can’t use offline/singleplayer characters on multiplayer
I am sorry, I am still quite new to this. What are SSF, P1 and P8? And can I trade with other players while in single player mode? Seeing as how I usually prefer single player, I kinda feel like multiplayer does not provide much in the way of fun for me. What other “perks” does multiplayer offer than I cannot do in single player?
Ssf - solo self found
P1 - 1 player difficulty
P8 - 8 player diff.
Higher p# means monster scales up to more hp but so does drop rate.
Ok, from what I can tell, you guys are not promoting multiplayer. Do I have that right? The only thing I can think of that would be enjoyable for me in multiplayer is the item/gear trading or selling. Otherwise, I would rather play alone.
In multi-player you can play alone in your own private game all you want, but you still have the option to play with others if you want to trade or get help with a quest. You can use the forums, discord, reddit, etc to setup a trade or group, and invite others to your game.
It doesn’t sound like you used the players command in single player anyway from your responses here, but single player has the option to type a command that artificially raises the player count on a single player game, thereby increasing xp, challenge and gear drops.
In a multi-player game, the intent is to play with others to increase your player count, so this feature is not avaliable for online characters.
The other big difference is that in single player mode the map is static. It’s repopulated with monsters between games, but the layout only changes when you change difficulty levels. In multi-player, every new game gets a new randomly generated layout.
A lot of people tend to join public multi-player games for experience runs but farm on their own so they don’t have to compete to pickup drops. So you playing by yourself and only joining games with others to trade is a perfectly reasonable way to play online multi-player mode.
Thanks so much, Insidious! Another question that comes to mind… so if I make a new (solo) multiplayer character, and I start a new (again, solo) game, if I save it and reload, the map will be different?
In single player the map stays the same until you change difficulties. Making a nightmare game while reset your maps when you make a normal game and same when you go back to nightmare the maps will have reset.
So, when I make a new online (solo) game, the map is generated. And most places in the game will be random, but some are fixed (i.e. the Rogue Encampment and Burial Grounds). That is as far as I have gotten in single player. Do I have this correct?
Yes
Some maps have almost the same layout always
But something changes like where their entrance is located
Ok, just for clarifications sake, certain places can be almost unique, but with some subtle changes, others are completely random? If I make a character and play through the first area right outside the Rogue Encampment, when I save and reload the game, will the outside map change every time I reboot and select my current character? If so, does that make grinding and gameplay that much harder, because the player has no clue where anything is and has to start from scratch? Or I could be wrong, and areas are generated the first time the player gets there but remains the same when the character is reloaded…?
Yes the map will stay the same and revealed where you’ve been. Once you change game difficulty then you will get new maps when you change back to normal.
There is also a way to copy your char files that will allow you to revert your game save to when you had whatever maps revealed they will be the same. This is mostly used to get the lower kirast map that has 2 camps with a fire for the super chests.
Also, Single Player mode allows you to use Hero Editor, which basically means you can edit characters and items.
Multiplayer allows you to see good items drop, but be prepared to see them vanish before you can get to them.
And occasionally in multiplayer, you get the delightful entry of PK’ers who go hostile on people who are not geared for PvP.
I had no idea that Diablo II: Resurrected characters could be edited/altered. Is that for the PC, or it be done on gaming consoles? And it’s disappointing (and probably frustrating) for someone to steal your hard-earned loot!!! But I assume that happens only when playing in an online game. I am very, very new to this game - having fun though!! So, I would not be prepared to take on another player. I am still on the fence about offline vs. online, mainly because I might like trading loot/gear with other players (online), but also manipulating the number of players (offline) to make loot drops more lucrative.
Multiplayer (currently) has only one upside over single player - Terror Zones. However, sooner or later this feature will be implemented in single player as well. In other aspects, single player wins hands down:
- You can set difficulty, XP gain and more loot drops using Players X command.
- You don’t have to worry about loot thieves, Players’ Killers, morons which spoil your quests, road runners etc.
- You are not restricted to 20 slots for characters, you can have as much as you wish.
- Maps have static layout, and once uncovered they are forever visible.
- You can edit your character, so if RNG screws you over and over you can show it middle finger. Or you can move say 2 points from energy to vitality, without need to respec whole character.
- You can use mods. More stash tabs? Sure, up to 7 16x13 tabs, easy peasy. Charms inventory? Here it comes, inventory size increased to 13x8, use a half for charms, and other half for stuff. Annoyed by watching intro vids every time? NoIntro mod to the rescue. Don’t wanna to miss charms/gems/other stuff? Light pillars mod will help with that. Have enough of too low drop chances for runes? Raise them to a satisfactory level. Need to know item levels? Sure. Etc., and so on.
- You don’t care about lack of games to join, queue, lags, disconnects and so on.
MasterBLB - Thanks so, so much for your post!! You have a bunch of really great points for single player vs. multiplayer. What are Terror Zones? I am still on the fence about single player and multiplayer - which to use for my gaming experience. I have a level 13 sorceress that I have been working on - and having a great time with this game!!! Single player gaming in Diablo II: Resurrected clearly has its perks!! The only real reason I was really debating about online gaming was because one player can sell/trade gear with another. But if I change the player number in offline gameplay, I presumably will get better gear. Your thoughts?
Terror Zones are feature of the current, 2nd season of ladder. You can read about them there:
https://maxroll.gg/d2/resources/terror-zones
In single player you can just edit your character to get the stuff you have to have. Note also that for trade you need something of value, which is not easy to get. On the other hand, later in the ladder, as I heard, it’s not hard either to find a bored players whose have all the items they wanted, and they just giveaway runes and stuff.
Technically, yes. To be more exact - you’ll find more items(more players set by PlayersX decrease NoDrop chance), and therefore you’ll have more chance to find something useful among them.
The ladder concept was relayed to me a few days ago, I don’t recall some of it, but from what I remember, I do know that I was not interested in it. I just want to load the game and have fun with it. I am considering everything you said about offline gaming, I am quite interested in the vast majority of it all. Also, I have a level 13 sorceress character that I have invested considerable time (for me), and though I am still quite new to the game, I don’t want all of my effort to go to waste.
In online play you have to deal with desync. This is a nightmare when playing a melee character. If you want to experience the game, play offline.
There are single player communities out there. You could even trade with them, provided you follow their rules. They use a program called GoMule to save their items on the harddrive, and you can then email the items to another person.
