While Blizzard obviously didnt support the map hack from diablo2 it did have some amazing features. I personally didnt see anything wrong with it showing monsters on the map as red X’s they also have icons above all the shrines so you could see at a distance what it was without having to get up close and mousing over.
Could these become possible toggle options so people who want this increased map functionality can have it, turned off be default so the purists can have their old school map.
And while i like those features I am against the reveal of the whole stage which i think is what most people used it for. I am still down for that exploration aspect
On a side note, having a full map reveal would help legit players acquiring gear themselves instead on relying on bots and 3rd party sites.
Maybe have the option to have the maps fully revealed once you’ve killed baal once. That way the original experience isn’t ruined and you help legit players farming items.
They ignored TurboHUD (unofficially) for several years in D3.
It would be nice if you just had an official map radar option so you didn’t have dance around some line of will they or won’t they enforce a rule about this particular issue.
Many who played way back in the day are more likely to have played with a MH pretty much all the time because you didn’t get banned for it way back then. I’m not sure they even had a way to detect it for a long time.
edit: in the Q&A they were asked a question about cheats and focused the answer entirely on dupes and bots and didn’t mention map hacks, so no clarity there.
What???
Are you serious? Using MH is against the terms of use. Hacking the game gets you banned and not allowed. Imho MH destroys half the games experience. Ofc they wil not allow it. Jesus Christ…these cheaters are everywhere
Am I serious about what? That map hacks were widely used in early D2? Yes. That’s a fact. I would expect there are still some but I haven’t played D2 in a very long time.
Am I serious that THUD was used for years by thousands of people in D3 and they weren’t banned even though Blizzard never officially commented on it? Yes. Fact. Maybe they’ve since changed their policies and now actively ban people for it, I wouldn’t know, but for a long period of time when I was playing they were not. You won’t find an official post about it, but it’s simply a fact as proven by the many people who were downloading and using it and never getting banned.
They also avoided mentioning map hacks/huds during the Q&A when they were specifically asked about cheating.
Whether you like it or not, map hacks were a major part of Diablo culture for decades. Some ARPGs include map radar by default, likely in large part because of the demand of the feature.
I think it’s worth considering making that aspect an optional part of the game since it was a massive part of the game for many people. I don’t actually expect them to, but it would make perfect sense to do so.
@Borg why dont we just add a auto MF option while we’re at it since it was also a major part of Diablo culture for decade it would make perfect sense to do so. and/or a chest that drops full and perfect gear set for your character. 15ed perf MP nigma, perf shako, perf ST spirit, 40 res hoto, perf arach, perf eth treks, 2 soj with same gfx, perf maras, perf ptorch, perf anni and full inv of 20 lifers pcombs.
@Borg you mention that MH was a major part of Diablo culture for decades even though you don’t expect them to add an optional feature to see the whole map, it does make perfect sense if they were to add it. To which I said bots were equally a major part of Diablo culture so why don’t they add a bot feature to the game that you can toggle on and off and it auto MFs for you.
I wouldn’t expect them to add all the features of oldschool map hacks like map reveal, a radar aspect wouldn’t be that dramatic.
edit: though again, I don’t have any real expectation that they’d give us a radar feature either, I just personally would like it.
THUD was never officially commented on for several years. They didn’t ban anyone for it while D3 was in its prime. Maybe they’ve since changed, I wouldn’t know, I don’t pay attention to D3 anymore.
Not a logical argument. Completely separate situations with completely different reason why you would or wouldn’t allow them.
A computer playing the game for you is an entirely different discussion than seeing monsters on your map. It’s a false equivalence and not especially relevant.
Even a radar tells you exactly which one is the incorrect way and thus, not only destroys the random dungeon experience but also grants huge economical advantages for users.
By radar I was just referring to seeing Xs on the map where enemies are. Presumably with some kind of range limit. It wouldn’t tell you where the entrances are or which tomb is correct etc.
I also don’t personally care if someone’s farming is slightly more efficient because they saw a cluster of mobs on the map and teleported over and killed it
There’s a number of rares in fixed locations if I remember correctly that wouldn’t be that hard to farm and that radar would give zero meaningful advantage in farming.
I did, but also Xs on the map can easily tell you where a dead end is. Anyhow, no cheats snd hacks will be implemented anyhow. I keep arguing with cheat/hack users since 2000.
This is probably going to be a confusing thread because people associate “map hack” with different things. Not really helped by the fact that a popular “map hack” is used a lot in single player and mods for reasons having nothing to do with auto-revealing the map, but for things like loot filtering.
Here’s an out of left field suggestion for the MH debate.
Allow for an enhanced “MH style” map, but make it a quest engine driven reward.
Players start with the classic map until the player has defeated the Act boss, then reward the player with an enhanced map for the act.
This would keep the essence of the random map during “first run throughs”, but allow for an enhanced map for MFing, and grinding out xp.
For multiplayer, the type of map available would would be dependant upon the game maker’s quest engine progress. This would keep the “questing time” map on a level playing field for new characters when an advanced character enters their game.
Unfortunately Rushers and speed runners would have to deal with a classic map (but I would argue that rushing and speed running were not in the original intent of the original game) but XP and Item farmers (which I believe was part of the original intent) would have the map they want.
Would that incentivize skipping every “non necessary” quest though? Why bother with any quest in Act 1 if you can just get straight to Andy, beat her, then go back and essentially have map hack for the rest?
