I think we are all in agreement that Find Potion is one of the most useless skills in the game. The only value it brings to the table is the 1%/level synergy to Find Item. After looking at the heart-shaped skill icon and reading the lore about warriors finding ways to effectively heal wounds, it would fit the fantasy by adding the following changes…
Find Potion Changes:
add increased chance to find Rejuvenation Potions per level
add chance to find Throwing Potions
add new Double Throw synergy that adds +X% damage per level for:
The second bullet point just adds more clutter - i never ever use those potions except before duriel (thaw) and before level 10 (stamina).
Stronger or more persistent healing would be nice though - none would benefit more than a Barb with that. Perhaps healing potions heal at the same rate, but last X% longer (increasing total healing but not healing rate).
Agreed and updated based on feedback. I guess Find Potion could come in handy in hardcore with stronger healing and mana potions and finding throwing potions.
Could be interesting if chugging potion while barb has less than 25% or 33% or 50% HP bar gives you bonus lifesteal. Or alternative with less life = more lifesteal.
Find potion giving 0,5% lifesteal per point if you have less than 50% life AND drinked Health potion. 10% lifesteal at 20 level.
I actually did a sort of a challenge run where find potion was an amazing skill. I was not allowed to use TP scrolls unless there was no other way to proceed. This way find potion was super helpful.
One thing that I don’t like about this skill is that it doesn’t drop antidote and thawing potions.
I wish Find Potion/Find Item/Grim Ward would all stack somehow. Like you could trigger which ones you would use when horking, and it would do all of them simultaneously.
Another option would be to make special potions you can only get from Find Potion. Magic Find potions, infravision potions (like Diablo 1 spell), etc.
I would prefer they change it entirely and remove anything related to potions entirely. The “Find Item” skill can already drop potions, no?
I would prefer it be a passive life regen stat instead.
Then again… I have never used the “Find Item” skill either. I would rather spend my time killing more monsters… because combat is more fun than fiddling with items
Seriously… why poke a corpse and check its pockets when I could be making more corpses instead
Interesting idea regarding a duration bonus to potions.
Though, even with ability to find all potions types ( Does find Item only find healing potions? or all types of potions? ) I believe that it will still hardly ever be utilized, especially over find-item. Rejuvenation ( Full / Regular ) potions fall pretty frequently in regular gameplay without using the skill.
Regarding throwing potion damage, it would be really nice if there was a way to increase damage to something useable in end-game. Perhaps a specialty item that provides a per level bonus to damage? ( such as the one entitled “alchemy” which i conceptialized here Custom Runewords - General Discussion - Diablo 2 Resurrected Forums (blizzard.com) )
Likewise, Double Throw, which functions using throwing potions, and throwing mastery, which functions to replenish potions thrown, could be revised so that the damage bonus, etc. applies to throwing potions.
I strongly disagree with the assessment that Find Potion is useless, as it is a good way to get Rejuvenation potions, especially since it starts replacing normal Rejuvenation potions by Full Rejuvenation potions as early as act IV normal.
It also has a pretty decent synergy with Grim Ward (if you max Find Potion, enemies take +120% damage while in its area of effect, which is a very important debuff).
Your suggestions 2 and 3 would only weaken the skill by reducing the chances of Rejuvenation potions in favor of potions even less desirable than health potions.
Balance-wise, I don’t believe that there’s an issue with the passive potion buff suggestion, though design-wise it makes the skill not properly fit in the Warcries skill-tree.
If we wanted to buff the skill a little more, I’d rather skew so that it drops rejuvs a little more often, and add a synergy with Double-Throw that boosts only thrown potion damage for the extra flavor.
But all in all, I don’t believe the skill needs a buff, it’s just not a skill for everyone.
I think Find Potion might’ve initially been designed as a party skill, before 1.10 vendors didn’t sell mana potions and Insight didn’t exist so casters had to be more frugal with their mana potions (which could only drop from containers and monsters).
Cue Find Potion, a barb in the party might not only provide shouts but also supply casters with mana potions. Clearly not the case anymore though.
Like Johnson said it’s still a useful utility skill if you want to stock up on rejuvs, spots like the Flayer Jungle waypoint are great for this purpose since there’s a lot of weak enemies that you can use for corpses.
I don’t see the need to change FP, I think it’s fine as is.
Imagine throwing poison potion first and then fire potion, that creates some weird chemical reaction that explode the whole area for 5x the combined damage of both, because the reaction is exothermic. Then further buffed by throwing mastery and skills in the combat tree.
