Jewels, can't be used as a character name

Okay, what I am saying is that the word Jew is not profane. Jewish people are a group of people that happen to share a common ancestry. You do not blanket ban an entire group of people, flagging their name as offensive, just because of a bunch of edgelords.

You do not punish ten innocent men to catch one criminal.

I was able to create a toon with my old DM name when I used to play D&D

Are you upset because you can’t create a character named “Jewish” (or some derivative)?

Or are you upset because you can’t freely be as toxic as you want?

I am personally upset because I cannot create a Necromancer named Sereksus, which is a completely original, by the way. But the Jew thing is more to do with the thread topic. Did you not read that either? The thread author was unable to create a character named Jewels because it contained the word Jew. Catch up, buddy.

I’m going to reiterate my point from earlier since I think you missed it. These should be considered reserved words and not “offensive”. You are getting hung up on the semantics as if Blizz is saying the word “Jewish” is offensive. Obviously that is not the case. It has to do with the context that it is used in.

I do not believe Blizzard has actually come out with a public statement on the issue, but if you type the word Jew in as a name, or anything with Jew in it like Jewels, it is flagged as either profane or reserved. That is either or, take your pick unless otherwise directed. I chose to take the most unfavorable one in order to get my point across.

I think you are also missing my point entirely. The Jews are innocent. The people that have names that begin with Se are innocent. Sean, Sebastian, Seline, Seamus, Serverus, Sera and so forth. Those people likely didn’t do anything wrong either. But their names are equally considered by Blizzard to be either profane or reserved.

I am not trying to be unreasonable. I am not actually asking them to allow Jew as a name, though I do believe it should be allowed and it is absurd that it is not allowed. What I am asking is that they lax the rules on name generation so that people like me can properly name their characters. Is that really too much to ask, considering I am not trying to be toxic with a name like Sereksus. Or Sean.

So what would you suggest they do in place of more lax restrictions on names?

Hire a new person to manually review every single name that’s created? Considering that’s likely what it would take if the filter was relaxed… yes, I think it is too much to ask.

EDIT: Not to mention all of the people that would contest those rulings… and the additional forum posts, because everyone knows we need more people here complaining.

How about rely on community policing. If anyone came across an offensive character name, they could report it and some Blizzard employee would do an investigation into the validity of the report.

They do that now with filters in place. So if I’m understanding… you’re suggesting to just let it be the Wild West. Everyone can create whatever name they want and then rely on people to report them?

  1. People would still be allowed to have toxic behavior with this
  2. The increase in # of cases would likely surge so much that it would take a hugely inordinate amount of time to respond to each report (if they were responded to at all) and would also likely require new staff to manage the case load.

It never ceases to amaze me how much people complain about the dumbest things here.

I am sorry that you would take the names of ordinary people in order to punish a few bad apples.

And yes Blizzard, this topic is important. It is my name you are taking from me, that is important to me. Others are welcome to join in the conversation and give their takes as well. This is a forum. Perhaps they are just choosing not to?

No system is going to be perfect and please everyone.

And that’s just the reality of it.

So damned be the innocent, they are casualties of your “Utopia”.

Right because this is totally a utopia.

It is clearly not, but your actions are in service of that dream.

Grow up and realize that it’s not all about you and what you want.

Grow up and realize that this is a Mature game and mature people should be able to hand foul language. Do real world police arrest those that use profane language out in public? …At least in America?

You agreed to a code of conduct when you purchased this game and signed up for the forums. If you are incapable of adhering to that or it offends your delicate sensibilities, then you should go elsewhere.

What about names beginning with the letters Se that would cause such a stir? Can’t be the three letter word people use to express human intimacy. Because while Jew is profane or reserved, Jeremy is not. So why then ban all names that begin with Se, but not all names that begin with Je? Why the inequality?

It’s not just Se. I bet you $1 it has something to do with the additional “ks” in the middle.

All of those letters in order are why you can’t make your name.

Try any of the names I gave you. Any of them. It is very much the Se part that is causing the stir. And besides, what ever could be so nefarious about ks? It is in lots of names and words, to the point of being rather common.
