How do you pronounce "Cham"?

This topic has probably been done to death, but this is one rune that I always wonder how to pronounce.

Most ppl I’ve come across pronounce it with the “ch” sound, as in the word “much”. This creates a bit of a Sino-Korean connotation, as I know Blizz had quite an affinity for Korea in those years. Also reminds me of the song “The Battle of Cham-Do” by Gorguts, which deals with Tibet. Tibet definitely comes across as a very “runic” location.

Then again, there’s the “kam” pronunciation, which is the other way “ch” is pronounced in English (as in the word “choir”), itself being derived from and cognate with the “h” pronunciation like you may find in Scotland, Germany or West Slavic lands. Looking from that angle, the word “Cham” reminds a lot of the Hebrew name “Ham”, the biblical figure, who is also spelled “Cham” occasionally (and consistently in the aforementioned languages). Names of people alive today such as Haim Saban are derived forms of the name Ham (or Cham/Chaim).

So due to my personal biases, I’ve been pronouncing it “kam”, but I can definitely see the merit in the “tcham” pronunciation also.

I pronounce it with the ch sound. In addition I pronounce the Ber rune like “bear” and not “bur”, and someone can have a soj but cannot have an soj because I pronounce it “sodge” like “dodge” and not “ess oh jay”.

I say it like “calm” without the l.

In portuguese…

C alone is pronounced like a K
And

I guess we’d have to know the origins of the word in the context of the game.

yeah.
since the game was designed in the U.S. I’ll stick with the American.

I’m canadian myself… it’s Armour not Armor …but you know… english and stuff.
this is an English forum after all. Can click on the Forum link on the launcher that will bring you to the correct regions forum

I agree to some extent. D2 has a lot of multinational names on items though. Guillame’s Face for example.

the Jade Tan Do dagger stands out to me like that.

I would imagine the Do is meant to be said like Du.

the game im from takes place in Ancient Korea… uses historical references and stuff but you know at the time i first stated playing in 97’ I wasn’t even thinking about it being asian themed (thought ARPG meant Asian Role Playing Game at the time…) everyone on it is either from the States or Canada.

at the time it was unique because every other game was doing the Dark ages thing and this was different.

ABC’s voice hehe

I don’t say “sodge”, or “ess oh jay”. I pronounce SoJ as “so”, or “sew” with the j being silent. Always have since I started playing D2 back in 2001/2002!

You are not wrong

But…

Please tell me you pronounce diablo as
“die-ay-blow”

it’s pronounced
“die-ab-low” or “de-ab-low” depending on who you ask never heard of anyone using a hard A for it.

with “de-ab-low” being the correct way to say it based on that’s how the mountain David Brevik named it after is meant to be said.

apparently the game itself was named after a mountain in San Francisco.
the boss should be a mountain. >.<
just slidin’ around shootin’ lava balls at your ice balls.

i’ll switch from Dee - ah - blow to Die-ah-blow depending on how much coffee I’ve consumed.
