I was thinking about ye olde Enigma conundrum today, and how it’s still really the only option for classes other than teleport to get around. Hustle was a nice budget idea in concept, but it doesn’t really change anything in the end game. It ends up being little more than a midgame quality of life item at best.
To this end, I have a proposal for a new runeword as an Enigma alternative in the transportation department. For it to be a viable alternative it:
- Must be cheaper than Enigma
- Should focus on movement
- Does not need to be overpowered
My proposal is for a 6-socket staff. Let’s call the runeword “Blur”. This way it can be used as a switch, similar to CTA, then switched off. Runes I would use:
LumKoLumHelIoSur
The direct rune benefits would add to vitality and energy to make for safer teleporting, and including the Hel rune would lower stat requirements in order to equip the item base. I included Sur because a HR should be present in a runeword like this, but I also like the idea of using its +mana property where used in armor (any extra mana would help with teleport).
Other runeword bonuses I might add:
- +1 teleport for all classes
- 40% run speed
- between 30%-50% fcr (this could be variable)
- 20 to all resist
- 10-15% to lightning skill damage (also variable)
- 10% chance to cast frost nova when struck (bit of a defensive proc when teleporting)
Would love to hear feedback on this. Would desperately like to see another way to add tele to other classes so there is diversity beyond Enigma or dependency on sorcs

Why not post your ideas on your regular account?
cool, so you like enigma. thanks for your contribution

This is a pretty good compromise compared to the NERF ENIGMA NERF TP NERF SORC brigade honestly
Only thing I see as being an issue is the Sur cause if I have a Sur drop im like well thats half a ber im saving to trade to a ber to craft enigma
Maybe like an Ohm or something would be good since then you can choose between cta for survivability or this for faster runs.

Cheap nigma would be cool I think. I use naj’s staff on swap, very handy.

Thanks for your take! I was definitely weighing “price” in thinking about the runes involved. To your point though, Sur is half a Ber, and Ber is half a Jah and you need both of the latter for Enigma, so I thought this was still much cheaper. BUT, love the debate on what the right balance might be

If that hapends the enigma armor drop down the flor its valor, nobody would make enigma.
I think if this runeword were implemented properly, it wouldn’t impact the value of Enigma; rather, the idea is to provide an alternative way to obtain teleport (lots of Sorcs use Enigma too, if you need assurance that another teleport item wouldn’t tank Enigma’s value).
I suggested this runeword be made in a 2h weapon - as well as not include other high end buffs present in Enigma like +2 to all skills, the damage reduction and scaling strength and magic find - in order to force tradeoffs and encourage it to be used situationally.
Another effect is that granting an item the teleport ability may increase the value of other armors. Maybe not the best example (but an example nonetheless) – if my poison nova necro didn’t need Enigma, I could allow him to wear Bramble while gaining teleport as needed on switch.
I think Enigma is, and still would be, BiS for many builds, even if the teleport ability were to be expanded in a measured capacity.
I can buy a teleport staff in A3 normal. Charges cost roughly 1400 gold per telly. Sur makes your runeword idea a lvl 61 item and if you converted a Sur into gold, well lets say you can telly an infinite amount of times with charges for a Sur…
There really is no problem with Enigma, we have telly staffs that solve the issue for ‘before enigma’. Why would you even introduce a staff to replace…a staff.

Staff or other items with tele charges is enough of a substitute.
If you struggle to get enigma instead of making forum posts you should try the #1 strat in all of gaming.
Git gud.
i honestly don’t understand how these “discussions” happen. enigma is not changing, your ideas will be left under the rug where they started. why even bother with any of this, the counter arguments, on any of it?? i know this is just as much as a waste… but damn… really guys ? enigma isn’t changing…

This guy doesn’t want enigma to change. Just can’t afford one, so wants to make a new special runeword just for him because he also doesn’t use CTA, so that he can pray to get a sur rune and be end build.

lol. yes, 100% agree, nothing will change as a result of this “debate”. To be clear, this post was not to suggest any changes to Enigma itself, and I never proposed any. Enigma itself is fine…
Those who responded “just buy a tele staff”, or “git gud” above entirely miss the point of this thread, which was intended to discuss item, build, and play style diversification.
Go on Maxroll and like 90% of the builds center around Enigma as the end game armor, which, fine…but that gets a bit…repetitive after a while. But, it sounds like the consensus here is “meh” so, alrighty then lol…
Not sure why me making a suggestion for a new item becomes a personal attack on what may or may not be in my stash lmao
DizzyDwarf is out for blood though lol…small axe or sumthin’
And? You staff wouldn’t be end game or bring build variety. Nobody is giving up their prebuff slot when there is a good armor that does the same thing that is BiS.
Just like most melee builds are Grief oriented. Just like most casters wear a spirit. Just like how builds that use IAS tend to use something with cannot be frozen on it. They’re slotted in this positions because something HAS to be the best option.
Good to know you speak for EVERYONE concerning their preferred item usage. The new runewords that come out each ladder must be soul crushing for you since NOTHING should EVER change on a 20+ year old game
…also…like…why so angry about this hypothetical discussion that definitely will not happen in game? Nobody’s comin’ to take yer 'nigma away

The builds on Maxroll are all ‘goals’ not the journey. Just about none of them address the reality of ‘earning’ that gear, but just being at the end point of having it all. Attempting to pattern yourself on those things is just silly, it’s just there to be a checklist of things you are trying to earn. As a basic rule of the game, use what you have don’t hold your breath for stuff you don’t have.
Honestly people should just learn to run, charge, leap, BoS etc so they aren’t so reliant on Telly.
I actually don’t mind the mosiac. It isn’t the right process for fixing the MA class, but you cannot expect much from these devs. There would be zero reason to waste part of the effort you’d use to make enigma to make an item that takes the slot of your CTA or other prebuff item. Even in single player. A low level teleport staff with low runes might work, but CTA is a huge powerboost that most aren’t giving up especially at the cost of a Sur rune. A runeword helm/armor or new unique if you were going to make an entry level teleport item would be much more useful.
And yes I speak for everyone with a brain who knows this isn’t a good idea. Just another noob trap runeword.
And btw I’m all for change, just change that involves using game knowledge and item knowledge to actually help advance the meta to be better or more fun or more diverse. Not some braindead thought process that comes up with perhaps the weakest possibility as a solution.
And yes I don’t think your idea nor any of mine will ever get implemented. Nor do I think anything happens to enigma/cta/grief. Nor do I think they’ll ever be interested in making a SSF clown ladder. They’re just going to keep making random dumb changes taking ideas from fred the stoner in the mail room who played D2 for 3 hours 20 years ago.
But at least if we are theorycrafting concepts let’s try to come to a good conclusion about ideas that aren’t going to be implemented rather than ideas that the smooth brained devs they left in charge would come up with.
@rondel true and fair points refreshing feedback
@dizzy we definitely won’t have a productive debate around teleport or my theoretical runeword that you hate lol…but that’s fine…
Saying that…I am genuinely curious at this point, what actual in-game runewords are on your noob trap list?
No. More. Runewords.
Add +1 Teleport to Tyraels Might and call it a day.
