Online mods will never happen from Blizzard. Wait until the game is thoroughly hacked and then online mods may become a possibility via unofficial means.
As far as no updates in over a year, I’m assuming you mean no gameplay updates in over a year. Not necessarily a bad thing, as those at Blizzard with the power to make changes are also the ones that worked on Diablo 3 and are working on Diablo 4. Do you honestly trust them to add gameplay updates to this remaster without ruining it by turning every class into an ultra easy overpowered monster pixel barbequing machine? We already got a taste of that with Mosaic.
The way to make online great again in this game is to stomp out the bots permanently. No weak sauce 6 months to a year ban wave crap, I’m talking at least one ban wave a week. Make the cheating vermin cringe at the thought of running a bot.
D2R will most likely never be the same level as it glory-golden days. It’s an old game and D2R was more of a fan service game which had a small resurgence.
That being said, there will always be a small niche of gamers who will play this. Even if “new” content were to come, it would most likely not be a large amount of people coming to check it out.
It would be cool though to do some small light patches for the active player base. Rebalancing, maybe a new runeword or unique every couple of seasons.
The game was destined for a quick death when they prevented modding like the original… all that to give as much chance to D4, not having a better Diablo product alter it’s sales
This is enough to keep most of us happy too. A couple of changes here and there that make previously unplayable builds worth playing, fixing melee, fixing poison damage, deleting mosaic
