Zone names on the Classic demo

So a friend of mine and I were curious to see what some of the zones in WoW would show up as in the Classic demo when looking at friends playing retail WoW in the Battle.net friend’s list. Most of them showed as Unknown, as expected, but there were some interesting things we found.

Just wanna say there was no exploiting here, I simply went to zones or entered instances on retail WoW and my friend subsequently checked which area I was in while logged in on the Classic demo on his friends list.

Some Northrend zones like Dragonblight, Zul’drak and Icecrown show up as ***On-Map Dungeon.

Naxxramas in Dragonblight correctly showed as Naxxramas, kinda expected because it is just a retuned version of the same raid.

Karazhan shows as Unknown even though we considered it might show up as Karazhan since Kara was originally intended to be part of Vanilla.

Northern Stranglethorn shows up as Stranglethorn Vale in Classic, but Cape of Stranglethorn shows as Unknown.

Here’s where it gets a little interesting...

Mount Hyjal showed up as Hyjal, but we kind of expected that since it was part of the map in Vanilla.

Grizzly Hills showed up as Darrowmere Lake Unused. Darrowmere Lake is part of Western Plaguelands in WoW.

I then went to Howling Fjord, which showed as Delete Me to my friend. We got a good laugh out of that one.

Utgarde Pinnacle came up as Alcaz Island.

Utgarde Keep showed up as... Westfall.

So I went to Westfall in retail WoW out of curiosity and it correctly showed as Westfall.

Decided to try some Caverns of Time instances next.

Escape from Durnholde Keep showed as Old Hillsbrad Foothills.

Black Morass showed as Black Morass.

The rest of the CoT dungeons and raids were all Unknown.

Seems like Old Hillsbrad and Black Morass may have been intended to be part of Vanilla but not used until BC.

Anyway, just some fun we had and definitely some interesting and funny zone names. We will be checking more!
keep up the good work kid. hard man asking the hard questions here!

Clever :) I like it
Interesting post, OP, I love stuff like this.

And yep, the maps of the Caverns of Time and the TBC dungeons within it were already 99% complete back in Vanilla. There were lots of vanilla exploration videos about them (such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQj0heXj3lE) and I personally glitched into the unopened Caverns of Time myself back then.

An entire much larger alpha version of Kara was also in Vanilla’s files as well as a surprisingly large Hellfire Peninsula prototype (about as large as current day HFP). Early on, HFP was going to be a high level zone that came after Eastern Plaguelands and part of the base game (which makes the vanilla login screen make a lot more sense). The original devs were insanely ambitious.

Back when John Staats was doing his interview rounds he talked about this. A lot of that content was developed during development on Vanilla with the intention of it being in the game, but as they got closer to release they decided they had content overload and cut a fair chunk of it to push back to the next expac.

Black Morass and OHB have been in the Vanilla game files forever. Go check out Noggaholic's old exploration videos if you're interested in seeing more.
good effort! keep up the exploring! /liked
Will definitely be updating with more findings!
