So ive collected almost 200 of these things, finally got a seed, planted it, killed the beasty, no rank 2. WTH? Yes, I have rank 1 already.
The Rank 2 drops off “the beasty” (Carnivorous Lasher), but it’s not a guaranteed drop, and I don’t think it drops off the “introductory” version of the thing (the first time you summon it, from a quest item).

The very first time you get a seed, it is as Sniper said an introductory quest to the Lasher. It results in a guaranteed dirt patch to plant it in because the area phases for you specially. That also means it is a super easy fight because its hit points are hugely nerfed, but it does not drop the Rank 2.
Future seeds you find can then trigger the main event, but you will have to wait for the dirt patch to spawn (just like any rare), other people will be able to help you, and you may need them to because it is a much more serious fight with way more HP and a lot more incoming damage to you. But, that guy can now drop the recipe. In my experience it is about a 1/3 chance. A lot of my guys got it first time, a few had to kill it several times.
Note that once you have done the intro quest you can join in on other people’s kills and get the drop even without your own seed, so it is worth passing by the area while farming to see if someone is fighting it. I know it is a different situation nowadays since way fewer people are in Nazj.
As posts 2 and 3 explain, this is working as intended. It just is not working as “it seems to be” intended.
This is a confusing game. To figure out what is happening, and why, you need to go to wowhead (nowadays), look up the quest, then go down to the player Comments tab. There, friendly players tell you what you REALLY have to do for this quest.
I figured this out in 2005. Lots of things are obvious, but lots of things are NOT obvious or even logical. That’s when I go to wowhead. There may be other good info sources, and in past years I used others. Now I use wowhead for quests.
Yeah they made Rank 2 of Zin a pain. You need a rare drop and then you have to fight a mob that has a chance to drop the item that gives you Rank 2.
I think I had given up after the second time it didn’t drop off the mob that spawns from the rare drop but a Guildie was farming Zin and spawned it a third time for me. It dropped that time and then Rank 3 came about fifteen minutes later after farming some Zin.
lies, you dont even need to get the seed to get your rank 2, you just need someone use their seed to summon the boss, then you just tag him, rank 2.
