its like beating a dead horse at this point so crazy the devs let monk be like this for so long …
The worst part is when you realize they took a perfectly functioning spec and crapped on it. Twice.
Because let’s not forget that MoP WW was excellent, and Legion WW was excellent.
Which MoP WW? which Legion WW? There was at least 3 different versions of WW in each of those expansions and not all of them were excellent.
All 3 iterations of WW in MoP were an absolute mess, with different play style changing masteries every tier, it just happened to be insanely strong in Throne of Thunder because of RoRO.
Legion had 4 different versions, EN/ToV was a terrible mess of chaos depending on your legendary. NH was better but was an entirely cleave based spec with little to no ST. Tomb was a beautiful symphony of flow but was very weak. Antorus was crazy strong but was a complete departure from the style decisions of the previous years as it became GCD locked and RNG based, laying the foundation for what it’s like now.
There were moments of greatness in both expansions, but WW was no less a mess for most of them than it is now.
Babs… uhh your making sense.
MoP monk did suck with the stacking TP. WoD sucked with the semi ranged attacks. Legion was super leggo dependent.
But uh /cheers to my first time agreeing with you. So this is awkward.
Think we can push for monk to go super sayien? Drop all the summons and become this empowered monster like a bm hunter is immune to fear and if the rotation is maintained we can stay 90% of boss fights in this super sayien mode like bms do with enrage?
Never got to play 5.2 WW. 5.4 was fun, but tame given its predecessors. That said, it still revolved around the system of building TeB, and it was given ample support through talents.
All of them were decent because despite how it played out in the raid meta, WW throughout Legion had a very good base kit. FoF and SCK/MotC shredded AoE. SotWL hit like a truck. Our CDs were very meaningful, but not overbloated and we could certainly keep up without them. Until Antorus, RNG was hardly a thing for us, and even then it was only because that tier set was so busted/poorly made.
This sounds like rose tinted cope
Probably a little regarding MoP, but Legion is sincere. I can say with reasonable confidence that the complaints about WW I had during Legion was because of PvP and all the damn template nerfs.
The Legion PvE kit was solid, but I was a bit salty when SotWL got its AoE nerfed. That and the whole Antorus tier design was disappointing. And also when they nerfed Tomb 6pc before the tier was over. And when they nerfed the Elisande trinket for WW before most people even got to use it.
Also saying “akshuallllly Monk was bad until 7.2” is some crazy red herring.
ALL of Legion was bad until 7.2.5 fixed a ton of issues with Artifact Knowledge and Legendary RNG.
And despite all that, Monk was still the only character I could stomach all the world content with and finished the campaign on. Which is way more than I can say for WoD, BFA, SL, or even DF.
In MoP, using Para-Blossom traps against ranged felt extremely rewarding, and getting a TEB FoF drop was a huge swing in PvP. When talking about PvE, Monk is not held against a standard of today but of where other classes were during MoP. Druids were slow rolling combo points to Savage Roar or Rogues were using Slice and Dice as Sub to get 0.6s attack speeds. Neither class plays like that today because it was equally different environments.
Most classes in MoP were these clunky augment builds in PvE and MoP still boasts one of the best feeling iterations of Monk DPS, where Combo Breaker procs encouraged pressing dynamic combat events and ability use was about layering buffs and not about standing in a Faerie Fartline to get a huge number boost to everything other than the dismal output of Faerie Superhero Stomp itself.
Good, relative to today, MoP and Legion were still better by every measure I can imagine… for Brewmaster, Legion was a dismal failure, and Mistweaver today is probably the best it’s ever felt. As a class it’s not all gloom and doom, but for Windwalker, all of the Shadowlands effects (including FFG) really need to be ripped out of the kit, like Aman’Thul yeeting Y’shaarj. It will hurt now but in time the spec might finally heal from the damage it’s doing.
