Zandalari Trolls are supposed to be Mayan/Incan/Aztec, right?

Then why does Talanji sound like she is from Wakanda?

I’m confused by this. Why not go for a more appropriate and accurate accent?

Because WoW loves to siphon off of pop culture, and Black Panther was at the height of popularity when BfA was in development.

Blizzard mixes stuff so nothing is 100% something, which is good imo.

Noticed this too with past expacs lol, WOTLK when zombie movies were rampant & Cataclysm when the 2012 doomsday theories were through the roof.

Idk if its intentional but its deff smart when they pull it off correctly.

I think Blizz takes there troll influence from multiple sources.

There’s heavy Jamaican, Caribbean, African and Portuguese influence in both the Zandalars and Darkspear.

Zandalari architecture is influenced by the Mayan/Incan/Aztec civilizations, but Zandalari culture is clearly influenced by Black Panther, with Zandalar, like Birnin Zana (the capital of Wakanda) being a melting pot of various tribes and cultures. The line ‘Zandalar Forever’ is also a reference to the line from Black Panther ‘Wakanda Forever’.

Yeah and Shadowlands is inspired by MCU movies but done terribly

Not really.

There’s no real MCU influence on Shadowlands. I know some people have memed that the Jailer is like Thanos, but he’s really not.

The Mayans, Incans, and Aztecs died out so how do you know they didn’t sound like they were from Wakanda? Also they probably wanted to make them sound more different from Darkspear and other trolls

They didn’t die out. The Spanish invaders killed the men, stole their land, and forced their women to carry their children. Latin Americans are descendants of Mayans, Incans, and Aztecs. Their blood survives, albeit in diluted form.

Their civilizations died, and accents aren’t biologically inherited, so we don’t know what their voices sounded like, unless someone who was around back then wrote a very detailed description or whatever.

They aren’t supposed to be like any one thing. They are a combination of different cultures they took inspiration from in the warcraft universe. The architecture is meso/south american.

This this this.

Zandalari sounded just like any other troll all the way up till BFA, then suddenly they’re africans shouting “Zandalar Forever!” and I HATE it. Black Panther is a good movie, but come on…

Really? You really see no similarities between them? Trying to use a great cosmic power to “fix” the universe? Needing to collect 5 magic mcguffins in order to do so? Looking down at people rebelling against them with pity? None of that feels similar to you?

Jailer is Thanos except without the personality, understandable motive, relatable emotions… or general coolness.

Uhh no, they’re not the same. Not even close.

Starting from the top. Thanos, for all his flaws, had an idea that would, theoretically, save the universe. By cutting the entire population in half, there would be enough resources for everyone to live. That is a noble goal, only tarnished by the way in which he was planning to carry it out. With the infinity stones he could have instead doubled or made infinite the resources of the universe, which would have had the same impact, but without the mass murder. Zovaal on the other hand is planning to remake reality so that everyone serves him. There’s no ‘hidden benefit’ there for everyone, it’s just Zovaal wanting to enslave reality to his will.

Moving on, the ‘magic mcguffins’. This is such a weird point to make, because for starters there are 6 infinity stones, not 5. Space, Reality, Power, Soul, Mind and Time. Each of these stones by themselves is extremely powerful and provides some tangible benefit to the person wielding them, and some cannot be harnessed for very long without some form of powerful relic (in the case of the Avengers films, the Infinity Gauntlet and the equivalent of it that was created by Tony Stark). Combined those 6 stones allow the wielder to perform one deed of their choosing with a snap of their fingers, but the feedback from doing so is crippling and can easily kill a man (as we saw at the end of Avengers: Endgame with the death of Tony Stark).

Now let’s look at the sigils, there are 5. 1 sigil granted to the leaders of each of the main covenants (the Archon, the Primus, the Winter Queen and Sire Denathrius) and 1 granted to the Arbiter. Losing them doesn’t weaken the various leaders that held them and Zovaal gaining one or more of them doesn’t give him a power boost. Only one sigil manages to do that, which is the Arbiter sigil, as it restored the power that was taken from him.

All the sigils do is open a portal to Zereth Mortis, that’s it. They do nothing else.

And as for his final point. There is no indication that he feels pity for the races or people that fight against him. He said ‘pity’ to one. That doesn’t mean he feels pity, it means he thinks it’s a pity that Sylvanas chose the path that she did, because she still had a use in his plan up until that point.

My guess is the writers were like people of color are people of color :man_shrugging:
And they mixed it all up. I don’t mind tho since it’s not like this game isn’t some history documentary lol

Nahuatl and other native American languages are still spoken throughout Mexico and Latin America. Some traditions are continued as well. Here’s a dance they do in my parents’ hometown. Although I think this would be more related to the Zacatecas and not the Aztecs.

Darkseid cough cough

Though honestly SL in general especially 9.1 onward just kinda gives me general Diablo/Doom:Eternal/generic Scifi vibes

I don’t mind it as much. I like that the other tribes kept their S. American or West Indian vibe while the Zandalari had a slightly different flavor. They did go a tad overboard w/ the Black Panther knock off though.
