I don’t think so. I think it makes sense that the Horde views itself that way, but it’s not the reality, and I have explained why that is. In short, various clashes in culture, a resentment of the past, logistics and civics all playing a role.
Now, am I giving Blizzard to much credit for developing something that complex? 100%. There is no way in Hell they developed that intentionally, but it does work out from a World Building perspective. So much so that the player’s love/hate relationship with the Horde, the frustration they have with the contention between what it’s supposed to be and what it is matches how members of the Horde would feel about it in lore.
Now that doesn’t mean I think the Horde should be consistently villainized. I am kind of sick having all my favorite places being set on fire. I do think the Horde should continue to struggle, making their moments of heroism more impactful.
I mean… Don’t get me started on the Shal’dorei. I doubt either of us have the energy…
You can like the character without siding with her though. By siding with her, you are essentially dropping your stamp of approval on Night Elf erasure.
Scrolling through most of this thread, you guys aren’t discussing so much as mudslinging and arguing over faction stuff in a non-constructive way. Which, again, a bit weird, maybe I just prefer to be more objective when it comes to how I approach the lore.
No, sorry, I have critical thinking skills and don’t assume someone on the internet is what they are IRL. I’m angry at the writers, not Horde players or Alliance players, and I’m well aware that the writing team stokes the faction war stuff because it lets them get away with their own fixations and helps them hide their lore failings.
Clearly it didn’t get much results but I think it was a discussion worth having. Faction identity is an interesting subject because in the case of the Horde, writers stepping away from that identity explains why many players feel so let down by the writing imo. I tried to get my points accross and I don’t believe it was all pointless.
Not spite. I do not really care about the Night Elves in particular. I actually wish we would have faced off against the Humans for Lordaeron or Stormwind. Or even Dwarves. Or defended against an Alliance invasion of Quelthalas.
I am not a huge Night Elf fan, but also, I do not really hate them much. I was down to blow up and fight the Alliance anywhere. Blizz happened to make it against the Night Elves.
I feel bad that some fans got screwed - it sucks when people do not get their way, and things go bad for a person’s team. But that is about the extent of my empathy - it is a bummer some one’s video game team took a hit.
But then we wouldn’t be here… or we would be stuck with discussing WC3 and a few WoW events from long ago.
I suppose that depends on what we mean by night elf fans?
As in, they play a nelf? Or as in they think the nelf story in WoW so far has been important and were uplifted by the promise of a new dawn for the Kaldorei with the purification of Teldrassil through toil and adversity? Which was totally undone with the burning of Teldrassil.
I think the ladder option makes it really hard to be both a nelf and Sylvanas fan, which is why I don’t like Sylvanas anymore despite her being, once, one of my favorite characters.
