Your thoughts on New World, the mmorpg

Amazon is about to launch a new mmo called New World. Are you going to try it? Personally I’m not sure. I just have a problem with giving my money to such a company. But it’s tempting!

I mean, they have enough money to throw at it in order for it to be successful.

I read that it’s pvp oriented. No matter how much money they throw at it, that’s never a good sign.

And there won’t be draenei to play!

I don’t really buy into hype for anything, once it comes out it should speak for itself. What I am wary of is that it looks like its going to be dreadfully boring and a one-trick-pony. I doubt it will last long without a huge marketing push, but any game could live on with a stupid amount of marketing.

I got into Guild Wars 2 lately and I’m enjoying that immensely. It’s probably going to be my wow substitute for a while.

Is it free to play? Or is it a part of your Amazon prime sub? If you have to buy and sub, I don’t expect to end well. Or they making it an eso model, buy the game and that is it.

I don’t think it will be free to play, but I could be wrong. And after looking at a gameplay video I think I’ll pass. It’s looks nothing like wow. It’s really a settlement building type of thing. Work on your crafts and manage your city, that’s all that was shown. Not really heavy on fantasy and combat.

Buy to play.

They haven’t shown a lot but the game does have a lot of fantasy and combat. You’re watching the wrong videos.

I have no interest in New World whatsoever.

  • PvP focus, I respect it but it isn’t for me.
  • Their sandbox mechanics look ripe for griefing and trolling.
  • Action combat in an MMO? Those always suck, no thank you.
  • Ew… Amazon.
  • No dungeon and no raid.
  • The setting about people and things getting corrupted is boring and cliche, and quite frankly looks like a ripoff of the Emerald Nightmare.

If you want a buy-to-play game with a somewhat respectable monetization model, an action-ish combat that doesn’t completely suck, acceptable PvP, dungeons and raids that well… exist, isn’t made by a %&#$ web giant company and that has a load of content, I recommend Guild Wars 2.

I think what made WoW as good as it was wasn’t the technical prowess of the designers, but their sense of humor and insights as gamers themselves.

The technical wizardry was definitely appreciated, but without the creative side of the house the game would have been just as sterile and uninspired as the last 100 MMORPGs produced since WoW.

QFT.

…do the kids still say “QFT”?

It’s a little comical people scoffing at Amazon yet support Activision-Blizzard lol

It’s a weird non-synergy thing. It’s as if Activision-Blizzard were to suddenly start marketing household appliances.

Amazon has had game and software developers for quite a while now. This is just going to be their first big take at a game.

We’ll see how it goes. A few things to consider:

  • They’re at least 10 years late to the MMO market (I’d argue that the MMO buzz pretty much died in the Year of Doom (2008));
  • I had to look up their released titles, and not a single one has ever pinged on my radar;
  • The current combat model has been described as “Dark Souls style,” which doesn’t have universal appeal;
  • The “War” system isn’t exactly a new concept, even in MMOs;
  • Money has never been a guarantee of success - on the contrary, it can backfire massively.

So, sure, kudos to them for trying, and I hope they surprise me. But I’ve seen countless hopeful MMO contenders fall flat on their faces over the years, and I’m not seeing anything in this one that would draw me in. In short, it feels like a vaporware cash grab.
