Your first anime

Devilman, on VHS.

I can’t say I’m much of an anime fan though, I find most of them stupid.

Most are like the obvious fanservice ones where the main female heroine loses her clothes 2 minutes into a boss fight or the harem themed ones. There are however other anime with very complex and compelling storylines that can grip you hard making you ask for more.

Depending who you ask. Some show’s have anime influences but where not made in Japan. Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Dragon Prince are good examples of that.

In true internet fashion, there is a tiny portion of loudmouthed idiots that will scream that if it’s not made in Japan it’s not “real” anime. On the other side of that coin, you have the small portion of idiots that think anime is for the “immature” “mentally deficient” or “weebs” only.

It’s an interesting discussion. The way I see it, it’s a sort of spectrum more than it is a binary yes/no.

Running with your example of Avatar, I’d say that’s on the “more anime” end of the spectrum, because it resembles anime in more than one aspect. While I can’t name any specific shows, on the other end of the spectrum there’s a number of other western titles that are “anime” in a much more shallow fashion, e.g. typical western cartoons with a pseudo-anime paint job.

Exactly. But XP has taught me that trying to have a civil discussion about it on a forum often ends up like a flight post here. Derailed and eventually locked.

To be fair, people into it or who attend conventions don’t do much to break the stereotype. But then I’m old, and I find anyone who dresses up like that very amusing.

There are a few others I enjoyed, but I don’t think it’s a genre I could take into my classic collection of movies or shows. Grave of the fireflies was pretty good though.

Inuyasha…or Tokyo mew mew…I can’t really remember which is first but its one of them

Going literally so far back as I can remember, before I was even 10 years old, it was Sailor Moon… waaaaay back when they aired on Cartoon Network’s Toonami program in the 90’s… STILL can’t believe it was almost 30 years ago… I don’t know or remember if I watched Pokemon before or after Sailor Moon, but that was either the very second, or the very first…

Nowadays I watch, among others in the same-ish genre(s):

One Piece
Ghost in the Shell
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
Evangelion
The Attack on Titan
Birdy the Mighty: Decode
Black Lagoon
Cowboy Bebop
Bleach (Ironically, WoW’s story with Shadowlands is currently a LOT like this one… Reiatsu = Anima… Jailer + Sylvanas = Aizen and Gin… Gotei 13 = Covenants… Mawsworn = Reigai… et cetera)

Quite the contrast, huh? Basically my preferences are any Seinen / Shounen anime where high school – an overdone major setting in anime as a whole, unfortunately – isn’t it’s primary setting or focus… there are some exceptions (Like Birdy: The Mighty Decode and Evangelion) but they are few and far between…

Sailor Moon used to come on regular TV in NYC at around 5am or so during the week in the mid 90s. I would wake up before school to catch it.

That was around the same time I started playing Chrono Trigger on Super Nintendo… it’s incredibly surreal to me that this was almost one quarter of a century ago… seriously, I feel old, and I’m only 30…

Sailor Pluto is hella fine tho, she was my first crush in anything anime / manga…

32 here, and I feel that haha. The 90s and early 00s feel like another lifetime at this point.

Wouldn’t be so bad to step back into the late 90s for a bit of a vacation… everything was so much more chill and positive. Might just be falling victim to nostalgia though.

You are NOT alone there… like seriously, I honestly believe my best years are actually behind me… I’m HOPING that’s not the case, but where I grew up in southern California felt like the perfect mix between Bastion and Revendreth in terms of aesthetics… I know those two zones are a terrible comparison, especially compared to previous WoW zones that had actual coastlines, but like… the coastline is just jaw-droppingly beautiful…

Not to mention, I actually had TANGIBLE friends back then, whom I actually spent time with growing up… and my parents seemed like actual parents to me, instead of the abusers they turned into after we left so-cal… thankfully, after we realized how BADLY we all screwed up as a family, we get along much better now… but still, nowhere near like before…
