What’s everyone’s favorite obscure piece of lore? Mine is that the windrider mounts can talk.

I didn’t know that about wyverns! Neat!

Sadly, my favorite pieces of obscure lore are probably retconned by now, but it’s hard to say for sure. I really liked the backstories for the Ahn’Qiraj bosses Ossirian the Unscarred (once an anubisath that was blessed and became a horusath for taking down a particularly difficult Bronze Dragon that troubled the Qiraji, nearly at the cost of his life) and Moam (an Obsidian Destroyer forged by the Twin Emperors, and blessed by C’Thun).

We didn’t get a whole lot of lore about the Qiraji when they were introduced, and I wish we got more snippets like those to tell us more about the raid bosses and their part/history in the storyline.

Stromgarde’s absolute savagery against Alterac. Technically i think it was retconned to be Lordaeron but originally after Perenolde betrayed the alliance. Stromgarde marched on THEIR OWN PEOPLE and slaughtered all of Alterac and burned their kingdom to the ground.

That event tells me all I need to know about Stromgarde. They are no nonsense and unforgiving. And I hope upon hope that Blizzard uses Stromgarde and the Trollbane name to create division within the alliance. I pray to see the red fist of Arathor alongside Gilneas and the Kaldorei marching on Stormwind to give lil’ lion a taste of what real kings are like.

Who would side with who?

Would the dwarves stand by Stormwind or go to the northern alliance?

Would the eastern kingdoms effectively be split in north and south, or would Stromgarde raze Stormwind to burning cinders like they did to Alterac?

I think it would be fascinating as an expansion.

Thank you so much for acknowledging this too many people forget that wyverns are a sapient beast like race…still very animalistic and will attack you like a panther dragon thing but I do love that very much!! I think it’s less of a “speaking” though, I remember in the Traveler book the wyvern One-eye that appears does a lot of weird noises and growling but the tauren could understand her. So I would like to know more about how that works.

I’ll have to think on my favorite obscure lore , I was just so happy someone mentioned wyverns!

I adore this idea and would love to see it put into use.

Personally, I could easily see merits to being on either side, and in turn would probably have 2 characters so I could play through both

Probably that Vol’jin had several children, the youngest of whom is named.

That the mean mugging green crystals in silver moon have always been there. But were originally filled with arcane

It was only when Kael’thas had gone to outland and sent some magi back did they refill them with fel.

J wonder if they went back to arcane or at least taken a less religious approach to holy and gone that route

Anub’arak was a nice guy and beloved by his people…then the Lich King happened.

Playing off our subterranean spider pals, something I liked was that the Scourge’s architecture and culture was based off of Nerubian structures following their assimilation.

Sadly, I think that might have been retconned come Shadowlands.

I don’t know how obsure it is to people but I do enjoy a lot of the lore in some of the Pandaren factions. Like the Shado-Pan have their Trial of the Red Blossoms, which is very dark as those who undergo it are children, pretty much 11-15 and from the short story it seems a lot die from it. I also don’t think a lot realize that Taran Zhu might be older than he looks, he was around when Yalia joined the Shado-Pan when she was 6, and she is probably in her early - mid thrties making Taran Zhu probably over fifty at this point lol.

I’m 90% sure its not canon anymore. But… Here are a few of my favorites.

  • Male nightelves communicated by telepathy. (WCIII Manual)
  • Tauren braided portions of their mane for every enemy they killed in combat.
  • Tauren were terrified of the arcane. They believed it caused something called “the Fever” and they carried medicine bags to ward against it.
  • Blue tauren were seen as an ill omen and most often cast out by their people because of this.

A few that are still canon.

  • Orcs have extremely keen senses. Almost wolflike, but not quite as good.
  • Orcs have very, very dense bones and muscle.
  • In addition to the above, Orgim was grumpy because they now had to breed their worgs to be BIGGER after the demonblood juiced them up.
  • Blackrocks (and Bonechewers) would birth newborns in streams. If they were deemed too weak by the father (or shaman, I forget which) they were drowned. (Terrible, but still interesting.)
  • Draenei are exceptionally agile, and that was one of their strengths when fighting the orcs.
  • Elementium was originally too heavy to make a full set of armor out of. (I mean, you could, but you wouldn’t be able to move with it.)
  • Zandalari can punch a hole in plate armor with their thumbs.
  • Laughing Skull were just assassins and thieves, the maniac thing was added in WoD.

Last… Tauren average ten feet in height, pandaren were originally only as tall as humans (this has been changed), orcs average seven feet in height, and Darkspeer average 7.5 feet.

Sad this is considered obscure because these are all things I love about orcs and feel like should be considered more in RP more often. Their keen senses is something I’m very passionate about and interested in. In the books they often make mention of them being able to smell and identify certain things.

I’ll add a few orcish ones of my own instead of just being happy over the small things people remembered:

-This isn’t really mentioned in books I don’t THINK, but like the wolf-like senses , orcs have rather good night vision as well. I’ve made a post on this before- but if you take a look at Garrosh in the WoD cinematic, there is a moment where you see a reflection go across his eyes. Something you usually see in animals who have keen night vision. This is called tapetum lucidum (when it does that reflection at night).

-And if you’re someone who knows me, you know how often I emote Gotosh with his ears and make note of it every time I see it remembered in the cinematic. Orcs emote with their ears, they fold back when angry, perk up, wiggle and droop as seen in in pre expansion cinematics, the current BFA cinematic and the Heartstone musical trailer “Hearthstone is Home”.

-Another is that orcs were referred to as ‘black bloods’ due to their blood being dark red as opposed to humans brighter red color.

Any excuse to talk about my love of orcs and their little mannerisms will be be jumped on right away…

Doomguards were once titan magic police and joined the Legion some point in the past.

Before Sargeras freed them, the doomguard were the titan’s hounds forever enslaved to police the use of arcane magics.
