Just finishing up Tides of Darkness book - completely agree. I like how he was chosen as #2 in the Alliance army because he wasn’t so pious.
The formatting doesnt like me starting with my least favorite first, the list goes from 5 to 1. Not sure why it wont enter it like ive entered it.

Orgrim Doomhammer- bizarre that such a storied character would get almost no mention outside of a few quests in WoD. Orgrim was a big deal, killing Blackhand in single combat and annihilating the Warlock presence in the Old Horde (Gul’dan was spared, but he didnt have much choice, he needed to give us Death Knights.) If Doomhammer was alive somehow, and made the next Warchief, Nobody would complain.
-
Saiden Dathrohan- the Original leader of the Silver Hand, the Original Grand Crusader Dathrohan was given the Libram of Holiness by the Church and served admirably in the 2nd war. He assaulted Stratholme and was cornered alone by Balnazzar, who killed him and possessed his corpse. Balnazzar caused all sorts of mayhem in his guise.

Thrall- this one should be no surprise, Go’el, the most powerful shaman. I have been a fan boy since WC3 and Lord of the Clans. Easily the best living candidate for Warchief, regardless of his setbacks. If blizzard does his return right, our heads will explode.
-
Joseph the Awakened- forget the Ashbringer, this paladin was tired of the horrible acts the crusade was involved in and started the Scarlet Renegades to free the order from demonic influence. His fate is still unkown, as the last we see of him, is of him dancing in the middle of an ongoing battle, dancing his pants off. Hopefully Sally Whitemane didnt have him killed, and he is behind the resurgence of the Scarlet Brotherhood.

Darion “The Manassa Mauler” Mograine- This guy is THE Death Knight. Theres a reason he is the one wielding Apocalypse when we drain our Artifact weapons into the giant Bone sword of silithus. This guy raided Naxxramas with like 5 people to save his father, he killed himself with the Ashbringer to release his father’s soul, attacked the Lich King on his own (and escaped from the Lich King’s mind control when given the opportunity) raided Lights Hope Chapel twice, raided Ice Ream Citadel and has one of the coolest slogans Ive ever heard. This guy is the reason that, back in Wrath, we hammered the Might of Mograine talent until our keyboards broke.
I almost forgot about Flynn Fairwind, he is super amusing and I really enjoyed all the quests with him !
Mathias is kind of fun too, just for being a sneaky in the know and always 2 steps ahead type of guy.
Nathanos is definitely an acquired taste, but incredibly funny. I love how much of a bootlicker he is for Slyvanas and his devotion to her is impressive. His snark is strong and I love “Slyvanas’ dog” .
I never got why there aren’t more goblins with a sense of morality. They could even make it the very Goblin perspective that there’s no point in supporting war because eventually your customers are all dead.
I love this, and I love you.
Goblins arent that pragmatic and are only into short term gain.
Huh ok. I clearly don’t understand Goblins. That just seems stupid to me. Eventually you’d run out of profit sources and then where would you be?
Garrosh
Sylvanas

Goblins are just the epitome of corporate greed. They are not purely Capitalist in their thinking. Where Capitalist thinking would be “Providing the greatest product and the greatest service will set us apart from the competition.” Goblins lining of thinking is more “How can we screw over our customers in a get rich quick scheme.”
Goblins are greedy, cheap and lazy. We see this in their shotty technology, which is always depicted as explosion-prone garbage that kinda-works, but lacks the refinement of gnomish tech. It’s why the two races have such a rivalry, because its two entirely different philosophies. Gnomes want to produce the best tech whereas goblins are trying to take short cuts.

5: Uther. He’s why I became a paladin. I remember him from WCII, and thought his death scene in WCIII set the tone of how far Arthas had really fallen. In my character’s background that I wrote (which was approaching novel length before he even hit 60 in vanilla), Uther saved Zaltann and his twin sister’s life just before he was killed in Andorhal. Obviously its not canon, but its why he makes this list.
4: Tirion Fordring. Yeah, I know. A lot of paladins already. Sensing a theme? The quest line where you find him as a hermit in the eastern plaguelands is still my favorite in all of WoW, and I’m a bit sad they took it out. The tragedy of going through the whole quest chain, just to have poor Taelan get smoked by Isilien got me. Plus, of Blood and Honor was one of the first Warcraft storied I read. Loved it.
3: Thrall: I mean, I make fun of him being a kill stealer and all, but to me, he’s a great character. Part of it is his desire for peace, but another is that he is far from perfect. He makes mistakes, and his mistakes lead to expansion packs. I’d say he’s the most human character in the game if not for the fact that he’s, uh… not.
2: Arthas Menethil. He’s the perfect bad guy. And maybe it’s because I grew up with the Star Wars prequels, and the internet hadn’t become mainstream enough for me to hate them, but I compared him a lot to Anakin. He wanted to do good, and he was very machiavellian in his approach to getting stuff done. He loved his people. And would do anything to save them. And then he was just a great bad guy afterwards.
1: Turalyon: Warcraft II was my favorite of the RTS games. I identified with Turalyon, and his journey in general. I sort of wish they hadn’t made him a lightforged monstrosity, but I’m glad he’s not dead. I was so excited when BC came out that I’d get to do quests for him, only to run into Khadgar instead. Bah!
It was pretty cool to bomb around the broken isles and Argus with his son, though.
So… 3 of my 5 are paladins. You know what’s really funny about that? I’m not even religious. I’m an Atheist. Weird that I’m attracted to the most fanatically religious class, eh?
