Your characters abilities

Do you RP your characters having any unique IC techniques they may or may not be related to your class, spec or race?

Zhii has the ability nullify damage with his physique which can expand in size increasing this ability to protect himself and others.

Lahil can control the water around him and use it to heal.

I RP Fey as a sub rogue with many of the abilities sub rogues have in the game. There are a few areas where I expand on things though.

She can use the Nightblade ability to such an extent where, if in an RP event I wind up with a killing blow roll, I have her inject so much Shadow energy into her opponent that they wind up totally consumed.

For Shadowstep, I explain that as the incredibly-fast creation of Void rifts, an explanation that works perfectly with her race.

And lastly, I’ve been tinkering with the idea of letting Cloak of Shadows do something akin to what Alleria does in the audio drama where she uses the Void to suck poison from Lothraxion’s body. However, Fey would have to be in physical contact with the person so that the cloak could wrap to them, and I’d let the success or failure of it be up to a roll or the consent of the other player. Don’t want to go assuming the same strength as a major Lore character as a default.

A while back I joined a guild that used the Dice Master Addon, and I was encouraged to make some skills/spells that suited my character. There are 5 slots, one of which has the elite frame around it.

It encouraged me to think about what spells would suit my character best. Naturally when one thinks about Elves and Magic they think, “Thousands of years of experience, should be OP,” but the nature of Magic Addiction and how the Wretched came to be made me realize that wasn’t quite the case. If a Thalassian Elf takes in too much magic, they end up a Wretched. I think this is why Human Mages have more notable lore characters. The likes of Jaina Proudmoore can go ahead and absorb the power of the Thunder King into her staff. A Thalassian Elf might’ve ended up turning into a Wretched in the attempt.

Thinking of all of this I took a good, long, hard look at Vex’s personality before realizing he’s more of a Support Mage who draws out the best in others, so I focused his spells on that, as well as his study of ancient magic.

Spellforce Blast: (3 Uses) Calls down a Spellforce Blast on a single opponent, dealing 1d2 spell damage to the target, and increasing damage it takes from any magical source by +1 (Stacking up to 3).

“Few are the Magi who eschew personal power for the ability to empower their allies.”

Runegarde Circle: (2 Uses) Creates a runic circle on the ground for one turn. Allies standing within the circle increase their defensive rolls by +3. Healing effects on allies within the circle are increased by +3.

“The Runegarde were an ancient order of Highborne Mages whom specialized in protecting and aiding their allies. Many of their techniques have been lost to the ages.”

Arcane Guardian: (1 Use) Conjures an Arcane Guardian under the command of the Mage, with 7 HP and an attack of 1d4 as spell damage. The Arcane Guardian absorbs damage that would be taken by the Mage.

“The Arcane Guardians were developed by Mages who favored a physical guardian while in danger.”

Arcana Encyclopedia: (Passive) The Arcana Encyclopedia gains 1 Charge for each spell cast by the Mage. These Charges can be used to cast spells from the Arcana Encyclopedia.

Spellbind - (1 Charge) Binds the target in a magical field, preventing action. Effect ends if target takes damage. Only one entity can be under the effect of Spellbind at a time.

Detect Magic - (1 Charge) Reveals magical effects and objects on or around a target, increasing the chance to dispel or nullify them to 100%.

Dispel Magic - (1 Charge) 25% chance to remove magical effects on the target, or cancel the effects of magical objects on a target.

Mass Invisibility - (2 Charges) The Mage and all allies gain the effects of Invisibility for two turns. Any action other than movement causes the effect of Invisibility to end.

Mass Teleport - (3 Charges) Teleports the Mage and all of his allies to a safe location. Requires a whole turn of Channeling to succeed.

“The Arcana Encyclopedia is a rare repository of magical knowledge.”

Brilliance Aura: (Passive - Elite Trait) All Mages adjacent to Vexander gain +1 to their rolls for each mage present. This effect includes Vexander. The effect of Circle of Magi stacks with other empowering effects.

“In ages past, Mages joined together to perform incredible feats of power. Those mages today who know the secrets of this powerful synergy can empower not only themselves, but their allies as well.”

Laurensa’s long-time specialty is ritual magic. Even before going fel, she spent a lot of time drawing sigil-filled circles to control the flow of energy.

There’s no real practical effect in RP. She’s mainly interested in being able to channel fel with minimal impact on her body, but it doesn’t make her Chaos Bolt hit any harder or anything. Mostly it’s so I can do magicnerd scenes with people whenever we feel like it.

Tamani likes to bribe others into doing her work for her, which is no longer an actual Rogue ability, so I suppose that counts.

Zen: He has a pretty thorough mastery of chi, due to the sheer amount of time he spent studying it and training with it.

He can self heal and heal others, although only minor injuries. A large cut or maybe a broken wrist at the most. Most of his use of chi is inwardly directed, increasing his own fortitude, speed, and strength. Which is pretty basic pandaren monk stuff. He often channels chi through his limbs when he strikes, and does so in a way that causes his punches to land harder, but not be lethal, unless absolutely necessary.

He also has the ability to detect levels of energy through meditation. Although he can’t typically identify it outright. That is to say, he could detect if necromatic magic was nearby, but he probably couldn’t tell you it was necromancy specifically.

Quinn Thatcher (my unborn Thornspeaker and alternate main): Quinn is pretty standard in terms of powers. Shapeshifting is his main weapon of choice. Nothing gets the job done like being a 600 pound bear made of thorns, stone, and wood. His main unique strength is his intelligence. I wrote him as being exceptionally cunning, and above average intelligence. At least by human standards. He’s always thinking three steps ahead and always has some scheme in the works.

Versca grabs handful of bees from her pockets and throws them at her enemies. It’s very effective against individuals allergic to bees.

Her more serious unique ability is she uses Touch of the Grave (the undead racial) and absorbs the chi (spirit/life/w/e) from her surroundings and uses it to heal an ally. Which makes her a good fit on the battlefield because she can both steal the life from a dying enemy and apply it to an ally.

As an Artificer Juspion utilizes the Draenei’s unique crystal technology to do whatever I want as long as my rolls pass. He’s not a combat character and still a little bit of a work in progress.

The few things that have stuck around is I RP that his off-hand is an Argunite crystal tablet that he documents information with. It also has the ability to scan an item or area for information. Whether I pass the roll or not depends if it reveals anything useful but I RP that it’s a pretty new creation so it still has some bugs to work out.

He also can put down teleportation beacons and so far they’ve been used to RP explain why we moved from one location to another super fast because ain’t no one got time to RP walk.

I also RP he uses a mixture of Argunite that was sequestered during the Argus invasion, as well a stock pile of Arkonite from when he lived on Draenor and a mixture of other crystals from various planets and places and home cooking. Which I RP explain why his stuff can be unstable and fail miserably or dramatically because he’s trying to Frankenstein all this junk together.

Adelbrand has some light “Beast Mastery” abilities. He’s casted “Murder of Crows” and can also cast [Insect Swarm] (Blizzard give it back plz.)

He’s got an affinity for wolves and has been known to call them to him for aid (initially planned to be a homage to the fact that this toon started as a Worgen character on Emerald Dream - he’s a Kul Tiran now.)

Don’t get me wrong, I do like the cosmic aspect of Druids and I’m sure Adelbrand will learn that stuff too in time. But right now he’s a much more “earthy” druid, using flora and fauna rather than the stars and moon and sun.

Apparently he can also use his powers to disguise himself as a male human when clearly he’s a gnome.

Thats one hell of a disguise my friend.

Astrea, along with a few of my other mages, is a Leywalker. I generally interpret this as her being able to heal using energy from local leylines as well as being able to momentarily buff the magnitude of her spells with the same. She can also travel through them. Besides all that her spellbook has an enchantment that allows it to store the contents of other books. It also serves as a scrying device when used in tandem with her familiar.

She also has a series of special arcane marks which can store excess energy for a time. They glow when doing so.

My Rogue, Zhihao, has a variety of ice based powers provided to her by an elemental bound to a chi-infused amulet. The amulet also facilitates an active camouflage field.

Addendum:

A few others I wanted to share:

Aurlanaar, my Draenei Paladin, has these flask she makes. They’re essentially arcane holy water grenades. They also double as a light spirit; she sometimes drinks their contents. She also knows a couple of arcane spells, Conjure Refreshment among them.

My Pandaren Warrior, Ju, has various uses of chi, including a special cut that simultaneously numbs the pain it causes as it kills you and the ability to form weapons from chi. While not an ability itself I also wanted to mention that her sword’s blade uses chi as a core.

While this character doesn’t currently exist I had an idea for a Void Elf. A certain quirk of hers, as a result of her transformation, was the ability to extend the length of her hair and otherwise manipulate it like an appendage. I suppose you could say she’d have literal tentacle hair. The original idea was based on a Yokai, however; the Hari Onago.

Ursuola isn’t hurt by nonmagical fire; she mostly uses this to freak people out by shoving her hands into hot coals, though.

Back when Kaz was an abjurist, I always roleplayed him as being able to cast dispel magic. Even though it technically isn’t a mage spell, I felt it fit the “fantasy” of what I was going for. But my mages tend more towards D&D-esque wizards than WoW-esque energymancers.

Speaking of, I’ve cribbed quite a few spells from D&D now that I think about it, like identify and detect magic. Identify is a tricky one, though. I try to avoid having Kaz just wave his hand and say “okay, this can do this and this and this” because that takes a lot of the fun out of discovering what a magical item can (and cannot) do.

Marsoor was a mage for about a century or three on Argus so he can still cast certain mage magics

also he can sense undisguised demons by sheer hatred and Lightforged-ness alone

Kait has a somewhat preternatural gift to take a direct hit and shrug it off. A strike that should hit its mark will often turn into a glancing blow.

(This is partly to account for the amount of absorption talents she has and is also inspired by the Exalted Champion trait from DnD that provides resistance to damage from nonmagical weapons.)

I’ve headcanoned that many High and Blood elves can use minor cantrips for all sorts of things, regardless of development of that talent.

Why?

Prestidigitation. Light. Warm.

Those are the kind of things that are extremely minor, but can be roleplayed as conveniences in everyday use. My rogue can’t do much more than light the occasional candle (and that rarely), but that’s one of those things that’s still darn useful for a variety of roleplay opportunities (including the cliched but delightful noir tradition of lighting someone’s cigarette). Other applications that immediately come to mind are puppet shows for children via minor illusions, complete with sound effects, or cleaning something quickly, or freshening up a shirt that’s taken on an odor, et cetera, so-forth and so-on. It really helps add a little depth to the magocratic society of the High and Blood elves.

Every Heroic Leap is IC.

But in seriousness, being a warrior leaves the special abilities to rather boring movements.

I do imagine Warriors use a lot of For Honor executes. Araghar with his flail probably fights like the conqueror.
