Your all time favorite lore characters

I haven’t done such a topic in quite some time so I want to know if the community changed their minds or if is all the same still.

I will start with my own list.

1.Kael’thas. The most iconic blood elf gets the top spot. I love him so much. He is the reason I became a blood elf fan in the first place. And an actual mage unlike Bob who is just another archer.
2. Sylvanas. By far the most influential elf character in the franchise. She had more cinematic screentime then anyone else and I have no doubts she will show up in Midnight too.
3. Ner’zhul. Elder shaman long before Thrall and leader of my favorite Orc clan. It is a shame what happened to him but at least his influence carried over into the modern Horde.
4. Doomhammer. The Horde of any age would not exist without his deeds and he killed Lothar in a fair duel. Orgrimmar is named after him and he was friends with Thrall and Durotan. Apart from that he had the right idea in the second war. Shame we couldn’t finish what he started like Grommash and Fenris wanted but the other warchief had a better idea.
5. Nathanos. Right hand man of Sylvanas and so OP it made night elf fans cope hard. With luck Sylvanas finds his soul and they be united again and show her sisters a heatlhy relationship without edges.
6. Rastakhan. Ancient king of all trolls and had an unbroken rule for 200 years. If Blizzard wasn’t hating trolls so hard then he would still be a symbol of unity and might even reclaim the old troll empire from the humans and high elves. I mean the guy was in his seat at the same time as Varians grandfather lived. Not even Zul’jin hold that much influence over all other trolls.
7. Fenris. Currently missing in action and we never found out what happened to him after the second war sadly. Like we knew he returned home when Dreanor went boom while Turalyon was lost in the Nether. He was also never involved in the evil politics of the rest of the Horde so essentially he did nothing wrong. And like Grommash he wanted to return fighting the alliance according to the game manual.
8. Ebyssian. The only dragon I can stand of the bunch since he isn’t in need of therapy or always failing to do their damm job at protecting the world. I have nothing else to say here really afterall they updated his model twice and made sure Wrathion will never be leader of anything. You go man make the black dragons proud.
9. Valtrois. I like Thalyssra but I feel like our Ley expert made the stoic entrance better most of the time. Also the First Arcanist uses shields most of the time and never had the chance to actually show her real power and I only work with what the game really shows and not told.
10. and finally Lady Liadrin. The other blood elf I have nothing but love for because whenever the Sin’Dorei show up she is shown to represent them and uses her faith in the light to draw victory. Maybe Midnight will finally give her her own model too and we can safley watch her rise above the odds and beat back the Void.

Who are your favorite characters? Tell me in the replies.

In no particular order.

Ner’zhul (MU): I like how he went from Kil’jaedens punching bag to actually being a major threat to the demon lord and in doing so, became one of the few characters to actually deceive The Deceiver (another other being Sargeras). How he could read Arthas like a book and knew which buttons to press via Mal’ganis. How he used Archimondes temperament to deny the other Dreadlords to launch an investigation following Mal’ganis’ untimely “accident” or “it was necessary to fully corrupt Arthas”. Depending on how you want to read it. Ultimately Ner’zhul was vital to the Legions defeat at Hyjal, even if our heroes (Thrall, Jaina, Malfurion, Tyrande and others) were not aware of it. I am a sucker for villain vs villain stories.

Garrosh: Mainly due to how his encounter draws fully from his negative character arc. How he started off consumed by his fears of repeating the same mistakes as his father, thus doubting his own leadership abilities and in doing so, fell to despair. Only for Thrall to renew his sense of Pride but that pride blinded him to the path that would fulfill the fears he had. He gave himself willingly to a “force beyond reckoning”. Threw away the weapon that had belonged to his family for generations and became synonymous with the name “Hellscream” for an Old God copy. His encounter calls back to his fears, doubts and despairs with the intermission phases during Phase 2. And when he is in a corner, he double downs and fully embraces Y’shaarj. After the encounter he shows some sense of regret but that is flushed away when given the chance to create a new horde, free from the Legions stain before it could even be made. Also he was WoW’s first expansion main antagonist that did not come from the RTS games.

Khadgar: I mean what is there to say? He is Dadgar. His young adulthood was taken from him by Sargeras / Medivh. So it is only natural that he acts a bit of a child / teenager but when things get serious, he drops the act and becomes the adult in the room.

Sire Denathrius: In a world where every villain must have a tragic backstory or they have a point but went too far in order to be considered “good”, it was refreshing to have a charismatic pure evil villain. I also love how is only real weakness is his genuine love for Renethal. I will always see him sending his ‘son’ to the Maw as more of a fatherly punishment i.e. you have to spend time with that one family member no-one really likes. I mean after all, Mal’ganis does say that no harm must come to the traitor Prince because “it would upset the master”. Easily the best thing to come out of Shadowlands by a large margin.

Queen Azshara: Prideful, Wrathful and ever Radiant. Everything an Evil Queen should be. I loved her characterization in the WotA novels and I was happy BFA kept that. I wanted more Azshara in BFA so hopefully Midnight, the expansion she is speculated to make her grand comeback is just as delightful from what little we saw in BFA. Much like Garrosh, I think her encounter is one of the best Blizzard has done for mixing story telling into the mechanics of the fight. The fact that it starts off with a bit of theater, transitioning into her getting bored so she throws herself into the ring. After having her fun, she brings out her gambit only for two upstart mages to even the playing field. Now she has to fight for her life for probably the first time ever. She fails to kill her enemies but does succeed in freeing N’zoth. However this was not the outcome she was hoping for. Her warbringers video is easily my favourite for those kinds of videos. The back and forth between her and N’zoth is always fun to watch. And how in what might have been her final moments, her pride quickly turned into panic and fear. Fear that she might have stepped over a line and bit the hand that could’ve fed her, saved her.

AU Gul’dan: Troy Baker at his best. Nuff said. But look at Daddy D’s reasons if you want more. Well, mainly the “fun evil villain” reason.

AU Blackhand: Oh boy that Talador cinematic and what a boss encounter. Easily the best from WoD’s for final raid boss.

Neltharion / Deathwing: Will of Iron and Stone, reduced to molten flame by the will of an Old God. Cursed to feel pain whenever the planet cracked. I love how Blizzard shaped him from a generic evil dragon with no substance into their version of Atlas. Burdened to hold the world on his shoulders. Only to be crushed by the weight. Driven to do evil acts on the false hope of being cured of this “curse”. Only in one possible future, to be cast aside as a disposable pawn. How many lives were ruined because of this?

King Varian Wrynn: “War. It’s all you’ve ever known isn’t it?. You were so young when you survived the First War. No wonder you’re so equipped in spirit to fight as well as you do. War is in your blood… You were forged by it!” - a slightly changed quote from a character from Star Wars. Bonus points if you know who says it, the show it is from, the episode name and who the original quote was about. But the quote does work for Varian. He was forged by war. Surviving the First War, becoming a refugee during the Second. Hoping to have a peaceful life when Stormwind was reconstructed only to be kidnapped when journeying to a peace summit in Theramore. Ripped in two, with one half becoming a gladiator slave while the other was sold back to Stormwind to be used as a puppet by Onyxia. And when he was made whole again, the scourge came a knocking. Losing his best friend and trusted guardian of his son to a betrayal. Then once again thrusted into war against the Horde. In his final moments he made the ultimate act of defiance against the Legion. Died fighting for his people, his son and his world against evil itself.

Onyxia: Easily Blizzard best written villain when it comes to a schemer and manipulator. She learned from her father after all but almost succeeded where he had failed. Wasting Stormwinds money on pointless military campaigns to expand a border that was already far extended due to Stormwinds defeat in the First War. In doing so, denied the Stonemasons the gold they deserved for their hard word restoring the city. Played the House of Nobles and the Defias Brotherhood as if they were mere puppets on strings. Sparking a civil war and working alongside her brother to launch the Blackrock orcs on an attack path into Redridge. While also sending other soldiers to the frontiers against other threats and even the Horde in various theaters of war. Leaving the defence of Stormwind and its borders to ununified militia groups. All dealing with their own problems to keep them from figuring out the enemy from within.

I might add more in the future.

Sylvanas: Frozen throne was great really sold me on the forsaken, Really wish they didn’t pile drive her in bfa onwards, really would have liked to have gotten the vibe the expac trailer got
Nobunodo: Goated story, really dig the broken as a sort of counter to the forsaken, one being rejected and the other accepted.
Gul’Dan: I liked his new backstory as the crippled orc that burned down the house.
Khadgar: Is probably the only neutral character i’v ever actually liked cause he doesn’t pretend to be neutral he just straight up never flip flops.
Kil’Jaeden: That legion really added a depth to him that i enjoyed.
Lilian: is a suprise on this list, cause i genuinly did not like her pre bfa, She is solely on this list because the characterisation she has gotten since then give me hope that atleast someone in the blizzard office understands what forsaken fans like.
Velen: Straight up the only alliance character i like, i enjoyed his legion arc, i liked him accepting the broken, cool dude.

Khadgar still belongs to the Sons of Lothar. The only neutral human we ever had was Tirion.

Azshara, just Azshara!

She is in my opinion the best lore character, because she is the one that still have an aura, the aura of the OG Warcraft.

Also she is maybe the most influencial character in the lore considering the war of the ancients and the great sundering which are key moments in warcraft lore are because of her.

She is a fish lady.

Genn Greymane = The man, the myth, the legend. The absolute unit who single handily handed Sylvanas the most embarrassing loss in her life. He is a man who set his eyes on something and sees it through

Velen = A humble, caring, down to earth being who genuinely tries to help those in need. We should all try to be more like him.

Vryanoth = The Ice Queen herself. She’s my favorite dragon that was introduced in War of the Scaleborn novel.

And you have a problem with that?!

Yes. Kappa.

  • Jaina: One of Warcraft’s most tragic characters and one of their better character arcs barring her lingering “Horde evil” phase. She was also endearing in her first appearance back in Warcraft 3 and really rises to the challenge (and she’s faced A LOT).
  • Nobunodo: Love the journey his arc did for himself and the broken Draenei.
  • Gul’dan: Mustache-twirling villain and a great example of “the child not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth”.
  • Darion Mograine: A dark anti-hero done right. Corrupted himself to save his father in the ultimate sacrifice (suck it, Demon Hunters), comes to terms with it and tries to harness the evil power he wields for good.
  • Kil’Jaeden: A more engaging and nuanced demon villain while still being clearly evil (a demon who can forgive minions who fail him!?). The connection with Velen also adds more layers. As the youtuber Nixxiom put it “Archimonde’s far more interesting counterpart”.
  • Azshara: A fun, charismatic villain who’s also reminiscent of several types of fairy-tale villains while bringing something unique to play. Another villain who’s clearly evil without excuses and has undergone good recent development. She’s also the reason the Naga exist and is one, and they are one of my favorite groups in WoW (playable Naga when!?)
  • Turalyon: Good middle-ground for a paladin, more fleshed out than Tirion, more open-minded than Uther. A huge part of Warcraft history and a rare example of a major religious character getting their faith explored without them becoming a zealot, an apostate and/or a villain.

Good picks really.

He is a cool character, i was so mad that he did not show up either in the forsaken quest nor in the reclaiming of gilneas when exploring azeroth stated that Fenris Isl was claimed by his pack…nothing mentions it in the forsaken quests when you have scarlet crusade having taken over the isl (and thus draining the claim from Ivar)

I honestly can’t stand the forsaken. Stupid heritage questline just so blizz can setup the forsaken and gilneans teaming up to retake Gilneas. Can’t even have our own cool moment retaking an alliance city

The forsaken had absolutely zero business being anywhere near Gilneas.

I’ll forever hate the forsaken due to that

Yeah, and not showing Ivar for such an important worgen event such as the reclaimng of Gilenas and have forsaken instead? Its kind of nonsense.

Dont blame them, blame Blizzard. Blizz seems to just hate the Worgen, gives them a trash hertiage set and quest chain, gives them their city but adds in zero updates/changes.

The Horde had no business in that questline, and I have not completed it on any Horde character I have, as far as I can recall.

They should have given us something else to do.
