Im leveling SUUPER SLOWLY. Im in maldraxxus as we speak. I want to take it all in and smell the flowers. Genuinely, i dont think im going to go through the oribos to bastion storyline again.
Bastion was beautiful. The storyline was all the yums. I spent hours literally wandering about farming herbs or fishing. Its so chill.
Obviously i could have just blasted through it all and followed the storyline then moved to the next zone with no issues.
But this is character one (well, my rogue is). So i want to enjoy it a bit.
Ive literally gone from a starter zone to a complete warzone. The first 5 quests in maldy are combat combat combat. Its a complete shift of pace. I HATE grinding mobs. Its so dumb and pointless (its basically a stop watch - do i kill it in 3 seconds or 5, what FUN??? But i can at least acknowledge its more in the wheelhouse of some other players. The big point here though is that during that leveling experience, we all get a bit of what we like.
Im so sorry for those who hate immersion (outside of dps meters), but finally this game saw the light. Its literally why i want to level slowly. Because i genuinely worry that after this is over, im back on the dumb ladder of instanced content and zero fun.
Iād love to point out two things: a) its ONE TIME ONLY (im sure folks will still cry about having nothing to do on the threads of fate when they choose it), and b) its like, at most THREE DAYS OF PLAYTIME IN A 2 YEAR LONG EXPANSION (so⦠maybe relax?). I get, for my two year long sub, 20 in game hours of total fun. You get 20 hours out of 4 bazillion hours of annoyance. Im loving the leveling experience. I wish end game is the real game didnt exist. But it does, so in literally a week and a half, weāre back to āend game is the real gameā. And i have to slap a dumb smile on my face and pretend it is for the next 102 weeks.
I really like the story. Sure thereās a few parts Iām not big on but yes, I think Blizz has made a huge step in the right direction with more emphasis on the story.
If you want action without story go play Tetris or Pong.
I mean the stories not that bad so far imo I just hit ardenweald though so might get worse but the quests are just so boring like omg I want to finish this campaign but these quest are just repetitive and boring

I liked the linear story way more than I liked the self-contained zones of Legion and BFA. I also like that thereās the Threads of Fate.
I honestly think they nailed it.
Itās been a long time since they told the story in a way that fits an MMORPG, but in comparison I like the story and zones a lot more than I did in the last two expansions. Granted I still have a little bit more to go in Revendreth.
Bastion is a pretty terrible questing experience. The whole cleansing thing is done like 5 different times and doesnāt change at all. I had a terrible feeling about this expansion while in Bastion. Maldraxxus definitely did better though. I really like Maldraxxus and just got into Ardenweald which despite the weird furry stuff seems ok.
Some of us like storyā¦although this particular story isnāt so amazing so far.
I enjoyed the entire storyline and now looking forward to venturing out into the world!
Not a fan of the progression-on-rails system, not even for a story. It was one of the worst things about WoD, imo. And this story isā¦lacking, so far. I get the point of Bastion, itās designed to humble the aspirant (player) and get them to accept an eternity of servitude (though, it really has some disquieting undertones of scientology-like trash āyou must cleanse your past, let go of the ties to family and the livingā). But, this whole expac is really starting to feel phoned-in. Small-ish zones that are pretty, but mostly empty. Little reason to explore the edges of the map. No reason to return to zones (other than mandatory wqās) once you know youāre not choosing that covenant. And the central neutral city is very Shattrath-like. And Covenants are supposed to be the garrison or class-hall feature for this expac? Yawn.
Really, the story itself isnāt that compelling, and muchā¦lesser. Why should I care about the Shadowlands, enough to want to save it? Because of Sylvanas? Missing faction leaders? Death is broken? Snooze. BfA was, at least, an exciting, galvanizing idea and the story was (mostly) well-written, just mechanically poor in execution. I guess in an mmorpg, you can have story or gameplay, but not both. My only hope is that this expansion IS smaller, on purpose, maybe with the idea that weāll be getting another expansion much sooner than 2.5 years.
I just canāt shake the feeling that WoW has had itās jump-the-shark moment when they stuck a planet-sized fork- er, sword in it.
