You spot a treasure chest

So, you’re out grinding mobs in a high traffic node. Lots of players of both factions, insane respawns… and you spy a lonely treasure chest. But! You must kill a few mobs to get to open it first.

And then somebody, at teh last second, swoops in and steals it!

That’s one side of the story. The other side is the other player(s) who also spotted it, while fighting nearby mobs. They killed their mobs, and claimed their prize. They knew as soon as they saw you, you’d try for it too, and they got lucky and killed their mobs first.

Or, maybe the second player never noticed you, had no idea you were after teh chest, I mean, they can’t read your mind, right?

Sometimes, I’m the first player, sometimes, I’m the second. Today, I was teh second player, and boy, did I get cussed out. It would have been worse had the other guy known a blue was in the chest.

Folks - don’t assume people can read your plans as you fight mobs, or even that you spotted the chest first. Don’t assume being the same faction means special treatment. Now, had the mage been on top of the chest, I’d have let them take it.

Ymmv. But - I even point chests out to people at times. And, I’ve seen people try to snag a chest I was on top of, only to aggro a mob, then rage because I claimed the chest. Dudes, if you try to race me, I’ll race you, too.

tldr - Chests are first come first served, unless you are literally on top of it.

You would have let them? What choice would you have had?

I guess i just don’t need that chest as much to make me so intense about it.

Though in most cases this “feigned innocense” is a bad excuse :slight_smile:i

If you see someone fighting mobs on a herb or chest it"s probable that they are clearing for it.

So either douche it and deny or just wait and see

If I get to the chest first, its mine. I dont care if you saw it first. Its probably just some health potions and a gemstone anyway.

I care about all of this less than I’m mad when everybody leaves like 4 bread and 1 water in a chest.

If a player is near the chest I leave it alone. Now if player walks away than I open. If a player takes while I am killing so be it.

I don’t bother with chests, they’re not worth the hassle. Most of the time they only have crap in them.

I’d say…if you are running up to a chest, and see someone fighting mobs right on top of it, it’s kind of bad form to run up and grab it while they’re inadvertently protecting you.

Buff/Heal/Bandage them as well so it puts them in combat.

That’s to give yourself a chance against ninja’s, anyway.

I think the implication was fighting a mob on top of the chest. We all know that someone fighting on top of something almost always intends to take it, be it a chest or herb/vein node. Only the really douchey people (IMO at least) try to take it from someone (sans PvP situations).

On a slightly related note I was camping Tethis today while my party-mate was heading over and a rogue tried to kill him. So I attacked him, he ran, and Tethis’ HP didn’t reset so we killed him. Felt good man. Felt good.

Edit: Oh! This reminds me of a time during MoP when I saw a rare and killed it. After I killed it I realized I had whispers from a mage chewing me out because he was going to attack it. Legitimately never even saw him, could have been charging up a pyroblast for all I knew or just eating/drinking before pulling. He was ticked though.

You spot a treasure chest!

I normally go about my business when it looks like someone else is working toward the chest - unless it’s an Alliance character. Sorry, nelf hunter in Hillsbrad earlier this week. That Gargoyle’s Bite was meant for my warrior friend.

I also don’t know if they recently looted it and left stuff in there. If they are right beside it I may leave it alone, but people take all this courtesy and etiquette stuff they made up to the extreme.

I did get a little turnabout the other day… In Stonetalon killing a quest boss after clearing the area just outside his hut and inside is a chest and an escort quest. Another player comes along, walks past me still fighting and goes straight to the chest. So I take the quest. As soon as the other player realizes I just activated the escort, they shot me an invite… lol.

I didn’t want to be greedy and take everything.

No there are sometimes they just take it, especially if they unstealth in front of it and open it , loot it, then restealth.

Just anything of value. Gotcha. : )

on a side note- one of the reasons why i like auto loot per mob only

i skin, and i like to kill as many as i can at a time

the times where it is more efficient to kill rather than stop and loot will leave me with 10-12 mobs to loot and skin

if i looted all at once all my mobs could be skinned by anyone

so i only loot what i will skin in the very next keystroke

——

with herbalism i will cc a mob nearby then loot the herb then fight (or run away from cc mob)

—-

i am on a pve server but i ninjad some skins from alliance in stv by prowling then skinning mobs right under the nose of an ally who looted but was still fighting (pve version of pvp)

with chests each encounter has it’s own circumstances depending on all kinds of factors

being able to stealth really adds to the chances of getting chests though

the bottom line is one needs to protect resources you havent collected yet and dont gripe if you slip up and someone else ninj’s a node or chest

If I see a chest and other players nearby I just assume they’ll be dbags and ninja it once I aggro the last mobs around chest, so I won’t even bother.

It’s actually sad how people on your own faction will ruin their reputation and screw over a fellow player just for what will likely be a bunch of junk like bread and cheese and a piece of ore, maybe a grey. It’s not like pservers where every chest has a guaranteed green boe in it.

unless I’m fighting literally right next to the treasure chest, I feel it’s fair game for chests because as OP said you never really know
