You shouldn't struggle to survive as tank: make it easy for dragonflight

Hi,

I think you should make tanks quite easy to survive when playing. Tanks are currently something you struggle to find for raiding, M+ etc. and it’s simply because it’s too challenging.

Very simplified reason(s) why people won’t tank:

  • You need to have a route and make sure people follow it. Adapt to route changes on the fly and change stratergy in the middle of keys
  • One mistake and you’re out in raid basically. You usually don’t have many jobs but when you do have one you must do it correctly
  • Aggro/threat issues in keys
  • Affixes such as: Necrotic, Bolstering, Raging

My suggestion is to make tanks simply super easy to survive as this will make you afford to spend more time focusing on other things. You can see spikes in how many tanks are available when they’re OP. Recent examples: BFA S2 Prot warrior, BFA Season 4 Versatility corruption, Blood DK Shadowlands S3/S4.

If you don’t make the tank the limiting factor for content you will see an increase in how many tanks are playing the game.

Remove aggro/threat - this mechanic is super boring and I think you removing skittish also proves this. No one enjoys it and it makes it sooooooooo much harder for a tank to start tanking. When you need to spend all your focus to keep aggro or gather the mobs you’re likely to die or another party member dieing.

I’ll post what I posted in the GD thread, coming from someone who enjoys tanking but never tanks because of how much pressure is put onto the tanks:

I don’t think it should be made easier.

However, I think they need to put less pressure on the tanks.

With DPS and heals if you make a mistake, the others make up for it and it rarely causes a wipe.

If you’re tanking, there’s only 2 tanks. A single mistake will likely wipe the group, even with battle resses, 9 times out of 10, you’ll end up getting at least one DPS killed in the process, or at worse, the other tank due to tank swap mechanics.

Less pressure needs to be added to tanks. For instance, in LFR, remove tank swap mechanics being one shot mechanics. Make them still be worth practicing to smooth out damage if you want (so instead of +5000% damage with the debuff, have it be like +5%, but for those times where a tank leaves and you’re stuck waiting for another tank - this type of change could make solo tanking possible.) NOte, this is already entirely possible on some fights - I’ve had tanks solo tank half of Sanctum of Domination in LFR. However, some fights have too punishing of Tank Swap Mechanics like Skolex that make it impossible.

This would also allow LFR to pop with only 1 tank (but still try to fill the 2nd over time), lowering LFR queue times drastically.

Pressure in Normal, Heroic, and Mythic is fine, that’s organized group content where communication is key so I don’t think that’s bad.

However, extend this similarly to M+. Make certain affixes increase a tank’s threat and decrease damage taken for the increased difficulty of tanking those weeks. (Things like Quaking that make positioning harder and Necrotic). Not to the point they can ignore the mechanics like the OP suggests, but to an extent where it’s less painful if you make a mistake. Cause I don’t tank because of how much pressure, and I’ve seen how bad a badly positioned group on quaking can quickly cause a wipe.

And necrotic is just bad. Lol.
