Everyone starts somewhere

And Beasties as a punk band

Hahahaha that “Jive” patch. I don’t know why but homeboy needs to be holding a Countach trapper keeper.

I was thinking it was either Autotune, like someone suggested, or where I finally decided that I was too old for the shenanigans. Lots of musicians being bigger than the music they made, and doing their best to out-weird each other for publicity. Granted, that’s not really a genre, and that happened in a lot of subcultures once Social Media was introduced. Even WoW.

J-pop and Dub step :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

This is what some call the “attention economy”. It’s the steroid-induced end-game of when society at large realizes that, even in terms of its own behavior, “if it bleeds, it leads”.

…and it isn’t even new. Madonna’s early career was almost entirely based on “No publicity is bad publicity.”

Yeah, it’s a goofy, mistake of a label like “modernist” and “establishment” in the sense that it looses meaning once it becomes mainstream. Eventually, we needed an alternative to the alternative, which is probably where the resurgence of Folk Rock came from.

I like to think that Grunge was the last easily identifiable new genre of music.

Yeah, that was me.

And I like to point out to millennials that Cher made it popular.

Loved this fun science show.

Oh there have been those who will show their behind in public for the attention since humans began gathering in groups.

What I find disconcerting is that such behavior is magnified by social media. Sure there were attention grabbers as crazy-like-a-fox entertainment careers (Houdini is an older example, hell Socrates even older), but regular people are doing it all the time because they’re on little TV shows in their mind. They even broadcast that show with their phone!

I think the real down side behind social media is the noise it creates.

People have to go ever further over the top to get attention. It was one thing when the “stars” were only competing among themselves for attention…

That’s what I tried to say… the crap’s boiled down to John Q. Smartphone now.

Linkin Park anyone? Rap + metal/hard rock.

Someone mentioned symphonic metal becoming a thing. Which I believe is about right.

And… didn’t emo and screamo start coming on the scene in the early 2000s, or was that more a little later?

You remember watching Sealab 2021 and realize that it’s no longer based in “the future”…

Reminds me of the Conan O’brien “in the year 2000” skit after 2000.

You had to walk to a payphone and use a dime to make a call on the fly. If you weren’t sure of their number, you could flip through the rather large book of numbers they had hanging in there from a chain.

technically they started in the 90’s and didn’t invent the sub genre (with all due respect to LP)
