Even people who did the right thing and switched servers at the last minute are going to be suffering tonight. It’s noon on a weekday and there’s already large queues.
I get that you want to encourage people to switch servers but the people that can switch have already switched. It’s time to just add more layers so people can actually play tonight. If you don’t do it people are going to get off work and sit in a 5 hour queue that ends when they go to bed.
Even if adding more layers results in massive populations on realms you can at least fix that with server transfers later. That’s a far better solution than people being unable to even play.
Adding more layers won’t solve the issue, in fact it worsens things for phase 2 when they promised they would get rid of layering entirely as it’s not a Classic thing and therefore should not be in Classic.
When I’m level 60 and want to WPvP all day, I’d like to see everyone that’s online in my server and not be phased out, thanks.
Yes. It will. That’s how layers work. You add them and they solve the issue of there being not enough layers.
It will become a problem later but it will solve the issues now. For phase 2 they’ll just have to offer server transfers for free. If they allowed server transfers right now they’d be swamped.
That’s exactly what they HAVE to do. They have to add more layers and raise the cap. Tonight at 5 pm there’s going to be a FIVE HOUR QUEUE on even the best release server.
This wasn’t my understanding of layers. Layers just prevents 1,000 people from all being in Goldshire at once. But if the server size has a max of 5,000 people (idk what the realistic numbers are), then that’s the max. Layers doesn’t solve the maximum server size. Just prevents an army of people from farming the same quest mobs.
You misunderstood. Every layer is a separate server. A server isn’t actually one machine. It’s a bunch of layers running on multiple servers in a cloud. They can freely increase the server size as much as they want.
I knew this would happen… OP you should’ve been here when the entire forum was up in arms against layering. Once they stare the reality of a 25k line queue, suddenly layering doesn’t seem like such a bad idea.
I really have no clue at all if people love or hate layering anymore.
So you think a steady pace of server transfers before phase 2 is somehow WORSE than dealing with 5 hour queues for a couple weeks?
You’re not making an argument from a rational point of view. You have a knee jerk dislike of layers even existing even when it’s logical to use them.
I’m guessing you can log in early and not worry about your queues so you’re just being selfish here. I can do the same thing but my guildies can’t.
Yes and no. The max server size is just an artificial limit setup by Blizzard for game play reasons, not technical reasons (at least not anymore). Layers accomplish both, they separate people when they’re all trying to play in the same zone but they also allow more people online concurrently.
You’re partially right, Blizzard can’t just create an unlimited number of layers and allow an unlimited number of players on the server because they want those populations to fall back to “normal” eventually. So layers solve the problem of short-term spikes in demand, they are not designed to allow for long-term mega server populations.
Exactly what Soteth said “It is noon on a WEEKDAY and there’s already large queues.” WEEKDAY now granted I am aware of a bunch of my friends that took the week off work just so we could all play Classic and have some fun our way yet again “NOON”“WEEKDAY” 2 hrs later 1450-1273 6 min wait went to 4 min wait and it actually has been over 2 hrs now. Also most of the adolescents are at school and still queues.
It’s silly for people to even care. They said they’d remove the layers later. All they have to do is free server transfers then turn the layers off. It’s not going to hurt to have some layers temporarily.
